BLURB FOR HER SISTER’S WEDDING:

What happens when you meet the right person at the wrong time?

Melbourne-based food journalist Mandy Evans has Paris firmly in her sights. She’s got a chance at her life-long dream of studying art in the City of Love, but not before she has to be a ring-in bridesmaid at her sister’s wedding.

After setting up his latest restaurant in Melbourne, renowned American chef Jake Pearson is leaving for his next project in Miami. He’s the hottest ticket in anyone’s town, with a burning ambition to conquer the world, but not before he’s best man at his friend’s wedding.

When Mandy and Jake meet, the attraction is instant. He loves her sassy, natural style, and her appetite for great food. She thinks he’s the best thing since sliced bread, or even martinis. Fate gives them a chance at love when they are partners at the same wedding, but can either of them compromise their ambitions to let love grow?

MY FAVOURITE TOP TEN THINGS IN LIFE

  1. My husband. He’s my Aussie hunk, although when we went to Las Vegas, everyone told him he looked like Jay Leno (so it’s okay to draw your own conclusions on the hunk label!)
  2. My four unruly pet ferrets, apart from when they steal my shoes or change purse.
  3. My Dyson Animal vacuum cleaner. This vacuum sucks up so much stuff out of the carpet, it’s like a science experiment. It has no cord, and is really just a stick you push around. It can only go for fifteen minutes, then it zonks out and has to be re-charged for five hours. A self-limiting vacuum cleaner. Perfect!!
  4. My sister.
  5. Gin. I could have put that as number 1.
  6. Condensed milk out of the can. LOVE IT.
  7. Celine Dion. My go-to-girl when I’ve lost my way. I think to myself ‘what would Celine do in this situation?’ She probably wouldn’t drink gin and eat condensed milk out of the tin.
  8. Swimming at the beach, but only when there are no sharks, stingrays or jelly fish around.
  9. 2.30pm. When not writing (or doing 15 minutes of vacuuming), I work as a nurse. Being a nurse is not like House or Grey’s Anatomy, so when my shift finishes at 2.30pm, I’m out the door quicker than a ferret trying to hide a stolen shoe.
  10. Writing novels.

What is it about Australian authors that make me want to fly down under?  While this book is set in Melbourne, it really could have set anywhere.  What I truly like about the authors from down under is their language and use of words.  Plus, their descriptions of ordinary things.  A lounge in Aussie, is a living/den/family room in America.  They always drink tea, too.  Anywoos…

On with the review.  I adored this story.  It had some heartbreaking moments and I was really worried at some point in the book but we are good hands with Ms. Ainsile.  She doesn’t wrap it up nicely with a bow.  Both Mandy and Jake have to figure out for themselves what is important to them and how it could possibly work out in the end.  For me, Jake had the most to learn about himself and the “why” he was so driven.  The side plot of parents played a huge part in it and it is something that children have to deal with.  And that’s all I’m going to say about that.  🙂

Mandy and Jake were great characters.  Each of them didn’t have a lot of emotional baggage (score) but like the blurb said,  “What happens when you meet the right person at the wrong time?”  That’s what happens to them.  Their initial meeting was funny and cute.  What Mandy said to Jake about the restuarant and food was priceless.  You could tell that he wanted to say something but bit his tongue.  One of the best “meets” I’ve read in a long time.  Watching them fall in love with each other was sweet and I totally appreciated that they didn’t take their relationship to the next level either.  It wasn’t about “the next level” .  Their relationship build up is about getting to know the other person and realizing what you are going to do about it in the end.

Dario, Prue, Brian and Charlotte were great secondary characters.  Dario was a great friend to Mandy and it was refreshing that Jake didn’t feel threatened by it.  Prue was a shrew but I could understand why she favored Charlotte over Mandy.  Charlotte was an excellent sister to Mandy.  There was no rivalry or hurt feelings towards one another.  There was true sisterly love between them and they only wanted the other one to be happy.  Brian is truly a minor blip within the story but when he was there, he lent support to Jake.  If I had one problem with a character it was  Mandy and Charlotte’s dad.  He was too weak in my mind and I felt like he could have been more there for Mandy and not cow down to Prue all the time.

Overall, you MUST read this book.  Its was one of my favorites this year.  While it was sweet in nature, the sexual tension is there and the whole sleeping in the same bed and oh my…the kitchen scene were brilliant.  Run, don’t walk and pick this one up.  Plus, come on.  Its set in Australia.

  1. This does sound like a must read! Thanks for the spotlight, review and giveaway! I have to admit that I too have a growing fondness for Aussie authors and “Ausie Hunks”!
