BLURB:

No Angels for Christmas . . . a cozy romantic mystery with suspense from The Mystery Angel Romances series. An angel hidden in every book waiting for you to figure who . . .

Child psychologist Rachel Kelly isn’t quite sure how to handle the situation with her newest client — a six-year-old boy who says he can talk to angels and one is coming to help Rachel. She already has her hands full of trouble this Christmas season, and things quickly take a turn for the worse when a stalker crashes Rachel’s Christmas party and takes her young clients hostage.

Police negotiator, Lt. Jake Dillon, walked away from his fiancée Rachel when she suddenly balked at having kids. His kids. Yet when the hostage crisis erupts, Rachel calls Jake first. Now he has a choice to make — stand back and wait for the cavalry to save Rachel or step in and try to save her himself. Time is running out, and Jake may be their only chance for rescue.

Unless Rachel’s little angel-spying client is telling the truth…

Excerpt Three:

“Since this isn’t our Publix, I’m assuming you stopped on your way home from work,” Jake said when she reached his side.

Our Publix? Did he even realize he’d said that?

“You’re right,” she replied. “So why are you here?”

“My apartment’s just around the corner.”

Ouch.

That simple statement shouldn’t hurt—she knew his apartment was near here—but it did. She nodded.

“I’ll help you out.” He gently nudged her hands off the cart handle and took over, setting his own bag on top of her stack.

Rachel paced alongside the grocery cart as they moved through the electronic door and knew a moment of joy that her parking spot lay at the far end of the lot. She would have a few extra moments to be with him. How pitiful was that? She eased a step closer, anxious to inhale his unique scent of soap, aftershave, and pure Jake.

He glanced over and caught her staring. Heat rushed to her cheeks, and she hoped he didn’t notice the flush.

“Jake, look out!” She grabbed the cart to stop it just short of a car backing out.

He gave her his sexy crooked Jake-smile. “Guess I should keep my eyes on the road.”

Her heart ka-thumped inside her chest. “At least until we get to the car.”

His smile went to an all-out grin.

Had she just flirted with him? Had it been that easy to get past her trauma for a few brief minutes?

Far sooner than she would have liked, he stopped the grocery cart next to her Honda and helped stow her bags in the trunk, leaving his in the cart.

“Thanks for helping me,” Rachel told him.

“I’m glad you decided to stop at this Publix tonight.”

“You are?”

“Yeah. I’m glad I got to see you.” Jake grazed a knuckle gently across her cheek leaving a streak of tingly nerve endings in its wake.

“But I thought you wanted . . . I mean, I haven’t heard from you . . .” She cleared her throat. “. . . in a long time. I thought you might’ve . . .”

Why couldn’t she finish a sentence tonight? Bad enough she felt pathetic, now she sounded pathetic.

“You thought I might’ve what?”

She swallowed hard. “Might’ve found someone else by now.”

He studied her for a long moment. “After all we meant to each other, you thought I’d go right out and grab a new girlfriend, just like that?” His mouth tightened to a thin line.

She hadn’t meant to rile him. The last thing she wanted to do was fight with him. Without thinking, she reached up and brushed two fingers gently across his lips, wanting that sensuous mouth to smile at her again.

She startled him, and he jerked at her touch. She whisked her fingers away. “Sorry. I don’t want you to be mad.”

His gaze trapped hers, his pupils expanding until little of the brilliant green remained. “There’s no new girlfriend, Rachel,” he said gruffly.

“No?”

He slowly shook his head, his all-dark eyes tracking hers. He seemed closer than he’d been a minute earlier.

She exhaled hard. “Not yet anyway.”

He frowned.

Why had she said that?

“No, not yet,” he said flatly.

“I’m glad,” she said quickly.

Screw pride.

“Are you?”

He was definitely closer now. If she eased forward just a few inches, she could press her lips to his, feel that certain sizzle that always flared when they touched. But Jake had walked out on her. His move. Though she ached with the need to hold him, if only for a second.

“Yes. Very glad. I don’t want you to find someone else—”

His lips brushed hers into silence—sweeping gently across as though seeking permission—the touch just light enough to make her lean in for more. He didn’t miss the movement and kissed her again, his lips settling on hers and nibbling at her lower lip.

The sensuous teasing had her knees growing weak, and she grabbed the placket of his dress shirt to steady herself.

He didn’t miss that movement either, and he cradled her cheeks in his big palms to deepen the kiss.

Suddenly lightheaded with desire, she twisted her knuckles into his shirt to keep him close. She didn’t care if they were kissing in front of God and everybody. If Jake wanted to throw her down here in the middle of the Publix parking lot, she was ready. She could always shop at Winn-Dixie.

Admittedly, this is not my first book by Ms. McCarty and this is the second book in a nonconnected series that I have read.  Ms. McCarty just keeps getting better and better with her storytelling and characters.  I will warn you though, this book has a lot of characters so you really need to pay attention when you read it.  Did I figure out the angel in this story?  Not a chance but when it was revealed I was actually shocked.  I would also say that this book has romantic elements, not a full-blown romance.  Jake and Rachel have a lot to go through before you get the big payoff and its worth it in the end.

Jake and Rachel have broken up at the beginning of the book and only the reader and Rachel know why.  Poor Jake.  He just can’t get a break with Rachel and their relationship.  Miscommunication is a big thing with these two and a time or two, I just wanted to bash them in the head but then there would be no story to finish.  🙂  Both have huge hearts when it comes to their jobs and it shows but when it comes to each other, not so much.  I won’t tell you the reason why they broke up but I understand it.  It’s just that Rachel really needed to be honest with Jake from the beginning.

The mystery and suspense in the book are fantastic.  Taut and suspenseful, I honestly didn’t know how it was all going to play out in the end.  Truly, I didn’t.  Just when you think the story is over, there are two more very important scenes that are just terrific and really solidified the book for me.  The kids in the book, Chad, Emily and Alex are dealing with some issues that are not easy to read in the book.  From physical abuse, a child pedophile and then just thinking your child is crazy because he can see angels.  Ms. McCarty has done her research and it shows.  Bravo and I loved how the kids bounded in the end.  Especially Chad and Emily.  Brought a smile to my face.

Overall, I really liked No Angels for Christmas.  Ms. McCarty knows how to write a book and keep the reader engaged.  This is not an easy book to read in parts but well worth it in the end.  Plus, Jake and Rachel…well, you need to read it.  Enjoy.

The Congressman’s Wife is a thrilling roller-coaster ride from beginning to end: fast-paced, sizzling with sex, yet constantly balanced on the edge of disaster . . . This is unquestionably one of the best books I have read . . .”

Excerpt One:

Kaleb had been standing close enough to hear it all—not that he’d intended to eavesdrop.  He only wanted to try and give her some kind of signal—to beg, if necessary—to get a moment alone with her.  When he heard her husband’s caustic words, Kaleb wanted to punch him.  He wanted to take Eden’s hand and lead her out of there, away from the complete jackass her husband seemed to be.

Instead, he followed her into the room where coats were checked for the evening.  The maid who’d taken them was nowhere about, and Eden was digging through the racks when Kaleb walked in.  She looked up, surprised.

“We need to talk about it,” he said.

“About what?”  She found her wrap and Mitchell’s Brooks Brothers overcoat, draped them over one arm and turned to face him.

“About this thing between us.”

“That’s not very original.”

“I feel it and I know you feel it.”

“Look, I’m very flattered,” she began but he cut her off.

“We don’t have much time.”  He moved closer, aching to touch her.  “Your husband will come looking for you any minute.  Just tell me when and where I can see you again.  Alone.”

“You can’t,” she said.  “My husband is running for congress.  It’s . . . it would be impossible.”

“No,” he insisted.  “I don’t know why we met or how we’re going to pull this off but I do know one thing.”  He was speaking so softly now that she had to move closer to hear him.

“What?” she asked, her lips just inches from his own.  They were of equal height and he could see how well, how perfectly, they would fit together.

“I won’t give up.  I want to make love to you.”

“At least once?” she countered.

He moved closer still.  “Once will never be enough for us.  You know that, too.”

She sighed, lightly, and her sweet breath lingered on his cheek for a moment before she moved away and broke the spell.

“My husband is waiting for me,” she said.  “You’re a little crazy, you know?  You need to forget about this.  I’m married.  I have kids.  I don’t have time for an affair.”

“Have lunch with me.”

“Sorry—too busy.”

“Just let me talk to you.  Give me two hours—maybe over the weekend.  Then if you never want to hear from me again, that’ll be it.  I swear.”

She didn’t say anything for a moment, as if she was considering it.  “As intriguing as that sounds, I’m afraid it’s impossible.  I’m going to the season opening at the Village Resort up in Hunter this weekend, with my best friend.”

“Your husband going too?” Kaleb persisted.

“No.  He has a previous engagement.  Not that it’s any of your business.”

He opened his mouth to answer but Mitchell’s voice rang out in the foyer.  “Edie—let’s go.  Where are you?”

She flashed Kaleb a warning look and called out softly, “Coming, Mitchell.”  Then she left, quickly, before her husband could see Kaleb standing in the shadows.

You know Harlie HATES cheating in a book.  Ugh!  But with this book, she gave it a chance.  And she is sure glad that she did.  Beautifully written, excellent plot, twists and turns and a couple that you truly wanted to be together.  Yes, she really wanted them to be together.  Here are her top reasons for liking/disliking the book:

LIKES

  1.  Eden – She could have come across as weak and in some ways, she was in the beginning.  There were children in the marriage and didn’t want to upset that part of her life.  She also didn’t really see a way out of her marriage with Mitchell.  Plus, where would she go?  Plus, when she met Kaleb she honestly didn’t know what true love was or even experienced it.  *sigh*
  2.  Kaleb – He never gave up on her.  Never.  Sure, he knew that she was married and to whom but he didn’t care.  He saw and heard they way Mitchell treated her and knew that she deserved so much better.
  3. The category that this book is in is Woman’s Lit.  I know, but there is a romantic element to it and some smexy times, too.  But overall, I think the category is corrected.  It’s about a woman’s journey to finding out what true love is about and going for it.
  4. I loved the political intrigue.  It kept me glued to the pages of the book.  I love a good political thriller so I’m in.
  5. The food.  Yes, the food.  Kaleb can cook and I swear I was famished when I finished the book.

DISLIKES

  1.  Mitchell – You are supposed to hate him but he took it to another level for me.  I can’t stand when a husband belittles his wife.  Douche!
  2. At times, I really felt like the book put me on a rollercoaster with all the political intrigue.  Yes, I like it but at times, I really wanted the romance between Eden and Kaleb.
  3. That this book is part of a trilogy.  I knew that going in but once I finished I really wanted to continue reading about Eden and Kaleb.  I went to Ms. Keel’s website and there is nothing in regards to the next book.  *sad face*
  4. The food.  Seriously, I was hungry throughout the whole book.  *winks at Arie*  Evil man
  5. That it ended.  Most of the times, I can finish a book and move on to the next one.  Not this one.  I want more.

Overall, this is one of the better political romance books that I’ve read in a very long time.  It’s timely, pertinent and suspenseful.  Plus, the romance between Eden and Kaleb is believable.  And yes, this is a cheating book but I highly recommend it.  Go figure!  🙂

Only because I want more of their story. 🙂

#Review of Avenging Kiss (Savage Security #2) by Karen Tjebben! @KTjebbenAuthor

Psychological Romantic/Suspense

Date Published:  December 2016

Some sins cannot be forgiven. Those must be avenged.

When Aditya Chopra stumbled upon the decimated camp, she vowed to hunt down the men who killed her sister. The stench of burnt flesh and the taste of death in the air haunt her dreams and power her lust for vengeance. She will show no mercy.

The men of Savage Security served their country. They’d done their time in the sandbox and now enjoy their peaceful lives in the States, far from the death and mayhem of war. Will living in peace blind them to the dangerous threat that’s poised to strike?

Excerpt:

The moment Jack had been waiting for finally arrived when the restaurant door opened and in walked Bella. Jack took her in. Her petite form was sheathed in a red dress that hugged her in all the right places. The plunging neckline accentuated her firm breasts and the skirt cradled her ass. He’d never seen her wear anything like that to work.

Bella’s smile radiated joy, and her eyes sparkled with happiness. Her long black hair with the pink tips fell beautifully over her shoulders. She was Jack’s weakness.  He wasn’t sure which part of her called to him more. Her sweet personality that brightened every day at Savage Security, or her fantasy worthy, smoking hot body. Those two traits combined made her the most desirable woman he’d ever known. From the moment they’d met, he’d recognized the sincerity and kindness in her eyes. In his line of work, he didn’t see much of that. He dealt with the dregs of society, and when he’d met Bella, he realized that she was the antidote to the cynicism that orbited him. And now as he took her in, he knew that he either needed to get over her or claim her as his own.

Bella looked over her shoulder and reached back with one hand. Behind her, a man reached out and locked hands with her. She smiled at him as he stepped beside her. Jack’s brows pulled together as the man’s body brushed against hers. Jack’s blood turned molten. He stared at them as they made their way towards the Christmas tree to drop off the toy she carried.

Cole couldn’t have been happier as he watched Jack’s reaction to Bella’s friend. If he’d realized Bella would show up with a man, he would have taken out his phone to record the look on Jack’s face.

The air around Jack thinned. He struggled to catch his breath. It felt like he’d been sucker punched by a gorilla.

Bella looked happy. With a man.

Jack shook his head in shock and finally remembered to breathe. “Who the hell is that?” Jack sneered. Irritation laced his words. His night had gone from promising to miserable in the period of a heartbeat. With each step the man took, Jack studied the intruder. The man’s short cropped blond hair stood in a messy, spikey jumble on top with the sides cut short. A short-trimmed beard and mustache completed his look. His clothes fit him well, the style current and fashionable. He looked like he’d stepped out of a magazine photoshoot after being prepped and perfected by professionals.

This male version of a fashionista’s relationship with Bella was not going to continue. Jack would definitely put an end to this man’s dreams of bedding his woman.

Mike watched the happy couple stroll to the Christmas tree. This was a new development. He hadn’t heard Bella talk about a man. Did Alisha know about this? He’d be sure to ask her.

Jack tore his eyes from Bella and looked at Cole. “Did you know about this?” He subtly pointed towards Bella and the mystery man on the other side of the room. “Did you know that she was bringing a friend tonight?”

Cole chuckled low. His shoulders rose and fell as his chuckle strengthened into a laugh. “No, but I think the night just got a hell of a lot better.” At least Cole suddenly felt much better. It was clear from Jack’s reaction that he didn’t need to worry about Julia. Jack’s OCD was about to be unleashed on the stranger who’d dared to put the moves on Bella. He knew it was going to kill Jack to watch her with a man tonight, especially one that may go home with her. He almost started to feel sorry for him.

Bella squeezed Eric’s hand. She was thankful that her dry spell was over. It had been a while since she’d been with a man. Sure, she was surrounded by macho, manly-men all day, and her friends were jealous that she worked in the midst of all that sexy testosterone, but they didn’t know the downside.

She was surrounded by all that testosterone.

The men she worked with were intense. Not the ‘their favorite team is playing their rival so they turn into madmen for a few hours’. No, everything about her coworkers was hardcore. They took everything seriously, and even their presence could be intimidating. Sometimes she felt as if she worked in a pressure cooker. She figured the men were probably sitting in the restaurant right now assessing threats, probably had been since they’d entered and probably would until they left. They never let their guard down.

This was an interesting read for me.  I liked it but it was kinda weird for me.  I like a true romantic suspense book just like the next person so I went into this one thinking that is what I was gonna get.  Believe me, it was a complete 180 from any romantic suspense that I’ve ever read.  Let me explain…

  1.  Villain – not to give too much away but the villain is actually a woman.  Yes, a woman.  And there is another major player in the villainy department.  My head was spinning…in a good way.
  2.   I like this book is a bout a team; not just an individual character.  That said, if you are looking for a true romance in the book.  Forget about it.  You will see a glimpse at one maybe in another book but not right now.
  3.   The amount of testosterone is amazing in the book.  I don’t think that I’ve read a suspense book were the outcome effects everyone on the team.  Not just one person.  It was great and I enjoyed getting to know all the guys.
  4.  If you are looking for a traditional romance in the book, it’s not there.  The excerpt I choose gives you glimpse but that’s about it.  He He!
  5. The action NEVER lets up in the book.  It’s very fast paced and will keep you on the edge of your seat.  Again, I really liked that.
  6. I didn’t read the first book in the series but after reading this one, I will definitely get it now.
  7. Logan, Cole, Mike and Jack have stolen my heart.  Literally…of Bella, too.

I read this book in one sitting.  Yes, one.  I couldn’t stop reading it.  I had to know what was going to happen.  Normally, I can put a book down, but not this one.  It’s a definite page turner for anyone looking for a suspense/thriller.  Highly recommend.
