Chris

“What are you doing?”

Ignoring her, I grab the first brush with paint my hands can get a hold of. As if predicting what I had intended to do, she reaches for it, yanking it from my hand. Annoyance fills me when she ruins my plan, so my mind is just as suddenly making a rash decision. Lifting a tube up ready to aim, she just as suddenly retreats, threatening, “Don’t you dare,” as she holds her arms out in an attempt to protect her.

It does nothing to deter my plans of retaliation. I swiftly flick the tube in her direction and squeeze at the same time. The content lands on her chest, earning an echoing gasp as it makes contact.

“There, now we’re even,” I say, slamming the tube back down on the table then begin my steps to retreat from the room. I’ve barely taken two steps when the feel of a wet substance runs down my back.

Whirling to face her, she gloats with an arched brow, holding a can.

Now you have an array of colors to take with you,” she smirks.

“What the hell did you pour on me?”

“Dirty water,” she proclaims before spinning to place the can on the table then tries to march past me. She believes she’s won. However I’m notorious for not allowing myself to be defeated. My arm wraps around her waist and lifts her off the ground, making her yelp in surprise.

“Oh no you don’t,” I tell her, stomping my way over to where the table of paints are at while she protests with shouts to put her down. She’s furious while I’m wickedly laughing at her reaction.

“What color would look good on you?” I ask, gently placing her on the floor to grab two brushes with paint. Lifting one hand, she side steps away as she exclaims,

“Don’t you dare, Chris!” She steps right in to the other already aimed at her face.

Her stupefied reaction makes me laugh, giving her the perfect opportunity to yank one of the brushes from my hand to mimic my earlier motion, smearing paint across my cheek.

“Purple is not your color.” Lowering the brush to dip it into a dab of green paint, I’m already following her movement to dip my own brush back into the red and we both hastily return to poking at each other with the brushes.

Our laughter booms in the room as we chase one another with our brushes. My resentment of how this all started has completely evaporated and is now replaced with cheerful competition as I try to cover Alyssa with as much paint as possible. Unfortunately for her, it’s much more difficult since she has been protectively guarding her paints.

In one swift move, I reach in and manage to grab a tube off the table then open it, ready to squirt it at her. Alyssa holds her hands up in surrender as she declares, “Please, don’t. That tube is a very rare color and hard to find.”

Snorting at what I believe is a ploy, I say, “I’m not buying that shit. You’ll probably use it on me.”

“I swear, I won’t,” she pleads, holding her hands out for me to surrender it.

First to catch my eyes is how labored her breathing has become as she cautiously closes the distance between us and gently takes the tube from my hands, all while explaining, “It’s called glaucous and this particular tube must have been expensive. That’s why I haven’t opened it.”

She walks back to the table, placing it against the far end of the wall. She takes another tube and returns, holding it out for me to take. “You could use this one if you’d like. I don’t care about that color at all and rarely ever use it.”

Taking in the tube she’s given me, it’s the color black.

Gazing down her entire body, she is covered in an array of colors. To add black would be to dim the beauty shining from her.

Shaking my head, I tell her, “You look too pretty to be covered in black.” Her cheeks are completely covered in paint, but there is no denying they are blazing crimson underneath the color.

Feeling as if I’ve exposed enough of myself to her today, I swiftly change the subject. “Please tell me this stuff will come off in the shower,” I say, staring down at the colors already caking on my skin.

She giggles, using her fingers to wipe paint away from my face. “Most of it should, but even if it doesn’t, you needed a little color in your life, remember?”

“That’s what I have you for,” I tell her, completely at a loss as to how rapidly those words came out. Nonetheless, they hold nothing but truth behind them.

She shocks me when she leans forward, kissing me on my lips with the same bashful smile still on her features. I can no longer hold back the restraint I have held with her . . . My heart and mind are screaming in unison not to anymore, and since it’s the first time they’ve ever agreed when it came to a girl . . . this time, I’m going to listen.

~Kessler

My lips are dry, so I drain the last few drops of Monster into my mouth. Using my tongue to coat my lips in that syrupy mixture of energy in a can, I feel Jai’s feathery brush of her lips against mine. Like fresh strawberries, plump and sweet. Closing my eyes, I reach out for her

And then as fast as it came, it’s gone. The vision is no longer there. My body, my mind, emotions, everything is in an ugly tug of war.

Memories: 1 Me: 0

I’m so fucking afraid. I’ve lost more of those moments, and there’s no way I can lose these memories too. But those memories remind me that Jai’s gone, allowing the darkest and blackest memory to wrap its unforgiving fingers around my heart. They squeeze so hard that I think I might bleed out. And when I relinquish control and accept their grasp’s bidding, they release me, clapping and cheering with the hostile irony they’ve created just for me.

My cheek against the cold concrete pulls me back to my reality, and I laugh. From exhaustion, from disbelief…

I don’t know.

Sweat from my workout coats my body and soaks into my clothes, creating a chill against my damp skin, so I’ll stay awake and I continue to laugh hysterically. My legs curl up to my chest and I’m on my side staring at a mark on the floor made by someone’s shoe. This makes me laugh harder.

Tears begin to fall from my tired eyes, so I swipe them away with one hand, trying to get them to stop, but more tumble out. They keep coming until it is one stream of salty liquid and I don’t want them to stop anymore.

I wonder how long I can cry before the tears cease to fall? Can I cry myself to death?

My sounds are odd and strangled, getting louder and louder. I hope Jaina can see me here. That she sees what she has reduced me to and how pathetic I am.

“BITCH! Can you hear me? Is this what you wanted? You win. Fuck you. Let’s play a different game now.” I’ve got my two middle fingers waving in the air in a lame attempt to send her a signal of surrender or maybe it’s to say “Fuck You.” Either way it’s not what I really feel or really want her to know. “I love you, baby. Come back and take me with you. Do you hear me? I said I fucking love you, but I hate you more.”

I don’t though.

I don’t hate her.

I can’t hate her.

Her best friend has his own comic shop, respects her fandom, and offers to add a with benefits clause to their relationship, to distract her from the stresses of work. What more could a geek-girl ask for?

Tori thought being the head designer and co-owner of a cosplay-themed lingerie company meant a chance to create. Instead of coming up with new ideas of her own, she spends all her time drawing others’ concepts, and managing her half the corporation.

The pressure pushes her past the edge of frustration. Her best friend and Sunday afternoon movie buddy, Archer, offers her an outlet—sex, minus the emotional attachment. When getting off takes a graphically novel turn, Tori realizes dirty talk is a massive turn-on.

The rush of speaking her mind bleeds into the workplace, and the backlash leaves Tori staggering. On top of that, she hasn’t protected her heart from Archer as well as she intended. Now the novelty of saying what she thinks threatens to screw Tori out of her job and her closest friend.

EXCERPT

He didn’t wait for her to ask this time, before he flicked his tongue out over a hard nipple and then wrapped his lips around it. He crawled his hands over her hips, pushing her panties out of the way and brushing her ass on the way down. His words vibrated against her breast when he spoke. “Tell me what you want.”

“More.”

“More what?”

He was going to make her say it, and she realized the only thing bothering her was that she wanted to speak the words. This wasn’t her.

But apparently it was.

“Finger me.” The two words rolled off her tongue and made her clit pulse.

bookreview

I swear I’ve NEVER wanted to slap someone upside their head in a book more than I did Archer.  Talk about someone who didn’t have a clue, put his foot in his mouth and generally just a bonehead.  Its bad enough that he was still a bit hung up on Riley but to drive the knife that much more in Tori’s heart at times…Grrrr….again, I really wanted to hurt him.

Poor Tori.  That girl had it rough on the work side.  I agreed with everything that she did in regards to her job and I’m glad that she finally spoke up.  Sometimes being passive in your work just doesn’t cut it.  It showed real character growth for Tori.  What I didn’t get was her wishy washy on the costumes.  It takes real talent to be able to sew costumes and she does it well.

I have to bring up Riley in this review.  While I loved her before, I really showed a major dislike for her in Archer’s story.  I know, she was necessary but egging on Archer in the stairwell…Ugh!  She did redeem herself with Tori in the end and I liked how we got an ending to her’s and Zane’s story.  One thing about Zane…I’m still in love with him.  So Alpha when it came to Riley and the scenes with Archer were well done, too.

Please keep in mind that this book has way more smexy times and more graphic than Riley and Zane’s story.  It’s needed to show how just having hawt times can lead to the more confusing emotions that creep up.  And wow, just wow…Archer and Tori had a lot of confusion between them and some.  What was interesting though was how Ms. Lindt dealt with Archer first.  She did an excellent job of making him look in the mirror and realize just how different his relationships were between Riley and Tori.  When he finally figured it out, I fist pumped.

Tori was a mess when it came to her emotions about Archer.  She took a little longer than Archer but hey…when you overhear a conversation between your lover and his ex-lover…I’d be confused too.  Honestly, I think her talk with Riley really helped her finally figure everything out.

Overall, Ms. Lindt has written a beautiful friends to lovers book that shows the good, the bad and the ugly times that it takes for two people to fall in love.  Throw in an ex, job woes, a hero that can’t keep his mouth shut and a heroine that you know is just the right person for the hero and BAM, you have Graphically Novel.  I can’t wait to see what else Ms. Lindt has up her sleeve for me to read.
