Excerpt Seven:
Pale With Color
Cheyenne Clark snatched her electric-blue apron from the hook and ambled out of the bathroom. Whoever the Mystery Man was, she liked hearing him order Chai tea. His voice sounded like Joseph’s, even his eyes were the same color.
She slipped the smock over her head and wrapped the strings around her waist—twice—then knotted them. Her appetite had been non-existent, and she lost a considerable amount of weight. Someday she was going to cut the blasted long ties, but it wouldn’t be today. She strode to the front and peered into the barista’s mirror that covered the length of the back wall, hoping to see his emerald green eyes, and his beard, a chestnut shadow, covering his square jaw.
Within the reflection, an open field materialized. She walked hand in hand with Joseph. He lifted their palms, and he kissed each her fingertip. The oak tree stood several feet from them, and mounds of overturned dirt marked the countryside. She understood what was under them and shuddered. Pop. The sound reverberated in her ears. She closed her eyes. Scared of what she’d see next, and at the same time rivaling her fear, the phenomenon captured her curiosity, Cheyenne peeked again, and the next image revealed Joseph dead, laying on the grass. She blinked several times, staring into the glass, and the scene vanished. She lowered her hands, and scraped her sweaty palms against her thighs. How many times would she relive Joseph’s death? After a year, she expected to be over his passing. Had anyone noticed she was hallucinating? How long had she stood fixated?
Glancing to her left and right, her employees were working on the same orders before the episode began. She scanned the mirror one more time and there he was, the Mystery Man stood second in line. She pivoted and tripped over the mat. Her hands stretched to catch one of the refrigerator handles, time turned into infinity. She missed and fell to the floor. Really? She lifted her chin, squinting through her hair, which covered her face in time to see Mystery Man leaning over the counter and studying her. Crap.
“Are you okay?” His brows furrowed.
“Disappearing would be good right about now.”
“Don’t move.” In one effortless jump, he hefted over the work surface and landed on his feet. “Let me check you out.”
She gasped.
“Relax. I’m a doctor.” His fingers wisped her long tresses to the side with the softest touch of any man save one, Joseph.
