Confident and resilient homicide detective Jennifer Scott is instinctively suspicious when her best friend’s life is disrupted by the arrival of an unbeknownst twin sister. When a murder coincides with her appearance, the mysterious twin becomes the prime suspect.
Adding confusion to Jen’s organized life is another unexpected intrusion, her handsome and sophisticated new partner, Detective Luke O’Connor. As mischievous as he is charming, chemistry between the two intensifies, threatening Jen’s reputation and testing her limitations.
As the murder investigation unfolds, the detectives are forced to back-burner their heated connection while they race against time to figure out what other long-lost family members may be involved, how they’re connected to the twins and why they’ve surfaced now.

His reply was also hushed, but other officers snuck curious glances our way. “Well, you are full of yourself, Detective Scott. I wasn’t hitting on you, I merely shook your hand and re-introduced myself, trying to make the situation between us comfortable since we will be working together. As your new partner, it’s my job to have your back, so to speak, so you have no choice but to have me in your personal space. I also don’t date cops and I would appreciate it if you would keep the “your type” comments to yourself since you know nothing about me, due in part to the fact that you can’t see two feet past your own ego that tells you every good-looking dude who walks by your blonde-haired, blue-eyed, pretty face must want to get into your pants.”
Oh my word, this book. I couldn’t get enough of it. Suspense, part thriller, part romance, this book had it all for me. Jen and Luke are perfect together but also apart. I love when an author can make me care about a couple like that. Their cute meet is hilarious but also endearing. Plus watching Jen try to NOT be attracted to Luke is funny.
Jen is the character that you just like immediately. She is the next-door neighbor that you want and I would definitely get a drink with her. Luke is just yummy and he knows it. The thing is though, he isn’t arrogant about his looks, money, etc. It’s part of who he is which Jen does not understand. That conversation later in the book is great. It sums up Luke and Jen needed to hear it. While this book is listed as romantic suspense, I felt like the romance is one that could be explored in another book. Their dialogue when discussing the case is authentic and it’s great to see two intelligent people bounce theories and ideas off of each other and not let ego get into the way.
The suspense and overall arc of the book is off the charts. Ms. Jaskula did her homework. What I found interesting was the twin angle. You hear about twins being separated but this is taking it to another level. And yall, it’s twisted but plausible at the same time. Honestly, the villains in the book are just vile. Vile, I say. Who would do that to their children? These two would and did. But that’s what makes this book so good. The shock value alone is breathtaking. I’m still trying to process some of the plot so that just means I get to read it again.
If you are looking for a twisted suspense plot with two people that you honestly care about and want together, this is for you. I’m hoping that I get to see Jen and Luke again. I would love to see their burgeoning romance explored more. Plus, I need Pirate back in my life.
