Book Title: The Mean Girl Apologies

Author: Stephanie Monahan

Book Synopsis: You know that catchy song you keep hearing on the radio?

It’s about you.

Natalie Jamison has spent five years trying to forget the girl she was in high school: popular, pretty…and, okay, mean. Now in her twenties and living once again in her small town, she’s right back where she was: following Queen Bee Amber and keeping secrets from her best friend, Sarah.

Secrets like Jack Moreland.

Everyone knows Jack Moreland—his new album, Good Enough, is everywhere. He’s famous. Impossibly handsome. Completely untouchable. But what none of Natalie’s old clique knows is that in high school, Natalie and Jack fell in love. And their secret relationship was incredible, painful—and earth-shattering enough to inspire an entire album.

Facing friends and enemies isn’t easy, but Natalie will go to great lengths to prove she is good enough—to her friends, to herself, and most of all, to the small-town boy turned worldwide heartthrob she never forgot.

I could kiss Ms. Monahan right now.  Finally a NA writer that gets it right.  No one is abused, into drugs, one night stands, a member of a MC club, fighter, or needs a person in there life to feel complete.  Bravo!  This is a book about righting wrongs, finding the real person inside yourself and realizing that the boy you loved, is still there…waiting for your apology.

I’m not sure where to start with the book.  I will start with don’t expect a huge romance in the book.  There is one but its told from the perspective of when Jack and Natalie were in high school.  Its more of a romantic elements book but for this couple and book it works.  The book is more about Natalie and the life that she lead in high school and coming home after college.  Natalie has a lot to figure out when she does.  Does she still want to be a sheep following Amber around?  Plus, having to face Sarah with the truth about her relationship with Jack, once the cat is out of the bag.

Loved, loved Natalie.  She has a bit of everyone in her.  I wasn’t a mean girl in high school but I understood why she did follow Amber around in high school.  That said, once things were said and done when she came home, I actually felt a bit sad for Amber.  Not a lot because I couldn’t stand her but in her last conversation with Natalie, I felt empathy for her.  Amber still had some growing up to do and I hope that she does.

Sarah and Gillian were great friends to Natalie.  Sarah was Natalie’s old life and Gillian was her new life.  In the end both meshed well and it also showed growth in Natalie being able to keep the “good” of her life in high school and the strides that she was making in her new life.  I will say that once the secret was out about her and Jack…I actually cringed.  I couldn’t imagine having to face my friends with that one.

Jack was a dream in my book.  He was never hateful, but patient and kind.  Yes, he did write an entire album in regards to his life with Natalie but in the end I thought it was sweet.  He still loved her enough to do that.  At least I thought so.

Again, this is a coming of age book with romantic elements WITHOUT the angst.  Again, bravo to Ms. Monahan for writing it.  I highly recommend it for everyone to read.  Some of it will make you cringe but for me, I still have a smile on my face.
