Katie Fitzgerald learned the hard way about love. She vowed to never get involved with a doctor at work, and when she did, he broke her heart. Older and wiser, Katie is serious about never getting hurt again. Dr. Flynn Reynolds, staff cardiologist at Windsor Falls Memorial, just might be the man to change her mind. Attraction explodes between the two from their very first meeting. But Katie is determined to protect her heart. Will Flynn convince her to take another chance?
Excerpt #5
“I was drunk, Flynn. My judgment was not at its best.”
“So, you weren’t responsible for what you said, Katie? Does that mean you didn’t mean it?”
Katie caught her lower lip between her teeth and thought about how best to answer. She hated lying. Even the smallest of lies. And he knew that about her, damn him. She turned to face him and took a deep breath. “Fine,” she spat at Flynn. “Yes, I find you very sexy. But then who doesn’t? I’m not planning on acting on it.”
Flynn closed the distance between them and leaned into her. The heat of his body burned hers. It was suddenly difficult to breathe. “What if I told you that I find you incredibly sexy too? Would that make a difference?”
Katie closed her eyes and tried for a snappy come back. Nothing. This was why she always avoided being close to him. It messed with her mind. Made it hard to think clearly. “No,” she whispered in response. Even to her own ears it sounded weak.
“What if I said pretty please?” Flynn advanced, trapping Katie against the wall. He placed a large hand on either side of her head and covered her body with his own.
Katie forced herself to open her eyes and look at Flynn. She was so close to him, that she could see the small scar that lay to the right of one eyebrow. She had never noticed it before. Now she wanted to trace it with her finger. Or maybe her tongue. She struggled for rational thought instead.
“Not even with a cherry on top, Flynn. You’re not my type.” For an honest person, Katie was lying a lot she thought with disgust. To herself now. Of course, he was her type. He was over six feet of toned muscle. He was every woman’s type.
I really don’t know how to begin this review. This is a new to me author and this is ONLY her second book. Seriously. Like her second book. I will go ahead and tell you that I bought her first one. The same characters are there and it introduces us to Flynn. *major swoon* In fact, he is now in my top ten of book boyfriends. I just couldn’t get enough of him. Katie is a gem, too. But you want to know the MAIN reason I loved this book? The AGE of the characters. These characters are in their mid-30’s and have been around the block. Katie has been hurt to the point of a complete shut down emotionally and Flynn just wants to settle down and get married. He has finally found a woman that couldn’t give a fig about his wallet.
Katie’s family is hilarious. I loved her brothers and the weekly poker game with Flynn. Not to mention shooting pool at The Hole. They didn’t give Flynn a hard time when it came to Katie, nor did Kat, Katie’s best friend. If there is one person that did give some crap was Elizabeth and maybe Katie’s mom. Elizabeth is good for Flynn. She didn’t sugar coat things and he actually listened to her. Katie’s mom, Maggie, is gentle with Katie but also gives her the nudge that she needs. Burnt pork roast anyone?
What starts as a kinda booty call, friends with benefits turns into so much more which terrifies Katie. And then to find out that she wasted all those years with the loser and that NO ONE liked him? What’s a girl to do? I hate to use the phrase, growth when it comes to older characters but Katie really did have the most to lose if she didn’t let go of all the hurt. Flynn deserves a medal for being so patient but he did it because he loved her. *swoon* He was willing to wait until about the last 30 pages. My heart sunk, I sniffed and thought how are they going to work this out?
Do they? You will have to read this fabulous book. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. Ms. O’Malley has a fan for life. Older characters, plots that actually make sense, smexy times, family, characters that you fall in love with, realistic dialogue, perfect pacing, interesting jobs, but above all…LOVE, LAUGHTER, and LIFE. You’ll regret it if you don’t pick it up.
About the Author
Kimberley O’Malley is a recent transplant to Charlotte, North Carolina from the frozen North. She is learning to say y’all but draws the line at sweet tea. Sarcasm is an art form in her world. When not writing, she is a full-time nurse and part-time soccer Mom, but not necessarily in that order. She shares her life with an amazing husband of more than twenty years, two teenagers, and one very sweet Shetland Sheepdog, Molly.
Seriously, I bought Sam and Elizabeth’s book. I don’t fangirl too much over hero’s but Flynn…he is up there with Jack Ryan (Tom Clancy) and Noah Clayborne (Julie Garwood) in my book. I loved your characters, your town and I can’t wait to read more.
Sweet tea isn’t that bad. I live in Texas. It eliminates a step. 🙂
