Salem, MA 1692

On a moonless night, he rides into the winter forest on his beast as black as midnight…

Dashing stranger, Henry Dunham, comes to Salem on a mysterious errand, but is thrown from his horse in the dead of night and rescued by the local Puritan midwife, Lydia Colson.

Haunted by her past, Lydia is running from her own dark secrets, avoiding intrusive questions by pretending her dead husband is simply… away. But when she and Henry are caught in a compromising situation, one punishable by Puritan law, he saves her from scandal by claiming to be her errant spouse… and claiming her bed.

Forced to fake a marriage, Lydia and Henry find their passion overwhelming and their vows a little too real. As their lies become truths, a witch hunt closes in on Lydia, threatening not only their burgeoning love, but her life.

EXCERPT #3

She seemed nowhere as flustered as he as she extracted his shirt from his breeches, but the very act of this woman undressing him sent desire coursing astray. Though new to her acquaintance, he found her innately appealing. Never before had he been so taken with a woman, even as he’d entertained a long parade of those pushed to claim access to his fortune through the transaction of marriage.

None had been like Lydia.

When her hands fell to his bare abdomen, the air crackled like the fire upon the hearth. Even she seemed startled as she drew breath and froze, save for her eyes seeking his, but she quickly pushed aside her hesitation and worked her soft ministrations against his skin. Her innocence only increased her appeal, though she was no untried girl. She was a widow who had surely known the pleasures of the marital bed.

His thoughts in cooperation with her touch roused his manhood, and his breeches did little to hide the evidence. For perhaps the first time in his twenty-four years, he cursed his need. He would do nothing willingly to alienate himself from the lovely physician’s company, but he could not stop that for which he ached.

She had dismissed her hesitance, no longer seeking permission to explore him. He sought in her a trace of the desire he cultivated, but she did not meet his eye. Not until she found his flustered groin did she speak. “You are not yet incapacitated, are you now?”

He blinked his surprise. Oh, how her quick tongue captured him! “Forgive me. You must know how you provoke desire.”

“I know the reputation of man,” she said. “Desire need not be provoked by much.”

Review:

Dipping my hand in historical romance again.  Of course, I picked a book that I had absolutely no clue about.  Yes, I choose this book because for a couple of reasons.

1.  Sarah Ballance.  Read her stuff people.  She never disappoints.

2.  The setting was during the Salem Witch Trials which I know nothing about.

3.  It is my first historical by Entangled.  *will start reading more now*

4.  Sarah Ballance…

Okay, so I got the book for the above reasons but also because I just love historicals sent in different time periods.  This one is definitely in a different time and place.  What through me in the beginning was the dialogue.  I don’t speak Puritan so I had to re-read some parts but once I got the flow of the dialect…I was off to the races.  When you read the book, you will understand.  🙂

Lydia was such an engaging character from the being of the book.  Trained as a midwife, she took her job very seriously and also her way of life.  Trouble was that was keeping a very well guarded secret, actually two of them and if word got around…she’d be killed.  Now, I what you are thinking…where does the “witch trial thingy” come into play.  Trust me, its all tied together.  You wouldn’t believe what these said about each other and the lengths that they go to to prove someone is a witch.

Henry was the perfect man for Lydia.  He was strong, sexy, treated her as equal and didn’t let Lydia talk bad about herself.  Even after she told him her secrets, he still loved her and wanted to be with her.  *swoon worthy*  One grip, if I had one, is that I felt the ending of the book with his parents could have been more fleshed out.  But that’s just me…maybe a sequel?  *bats eyelashes*  I must know about Robert…

If you are looking for a different kind of historical in a well known time period in American history than I suggest Her Wicked Sin.  Historical accurate, brilliant dialogue (once you get the hang of it) and characters that you truly want nothing more than their HEA.  This book is a perfect example of why I read Sarah Ballance.  I reviewed a horror/paranormal of hers a couple of weeks ago and then BAM, a historical.  She’s brilliant I say…just brilliant.  🙂

Author Bio:Sarah Ballance

Sarah and her husband of what he calls “many long, long years” live on the mid-Atlantic coast with their six young children, all of whom are perfectly adorable when they’re asleep. She never dreamed of becoming an author, but as a homeschooling mom, she often jokes she writes fiction because if she wants anyone to listen to her, she has to make them up. (As it turns out, her characters aren’t much better than the kids). Though she adores romantic suspense, she writes in many genres. 1. I hope this isn’t a duplicate comment. My server timed out. ARGH. Anyway, what I was trying to say was THANK YOU so much for this YOU MADE MY DAY review! I’m absolutely thrilled you liked my first stab at a historical. I have to admit when I first started writing I had to make a concentrated effort to write the language, but by the time I finished the story those words were slipping into everyday conversation, LOL!

    1. After I “learned” the dialogue, the story really flowed for me. Your research had to have been extensive. I can’t wait to read another historical from you. But then, I read anything that you write. 🙂
