It takes courage to choose love…
Internet security expert Michael Valentine knows his place in Kacey Hamilton’s life. The soap opera star lives in two worlds: glamorous Hollywood and small town Santa Raquel, where she volunteers with him at The Lemonade Stand women’s shelter. The key to their friendship is maintaining boundaries. And after an accident years ago left him badly scarred, he won’t expect anything more. But when threats against Kacey escalate, Michael will stop at nothing to protect her. Even if his investigation means confronting more than just her attacker as Kacey’s interest in him starts to go deeper than friendship…

Other Books in the Series
(Books released as of February 2017. Each can be read as a standalone.)
I know that I rave about Ms. Quinn but come on, I’ve been reading her books for years and she never disappoints. Never. I couldn’t wait to jump into Kacey’s book. She is introduced in her twin sister’s, Lacey’s book, His First Choice. You don’t necessarily have to read it but it will give you a better understanding of Kacey in this one. It’s a good one, too. Deals with domestic violence against a man. Yes, Ms. Quinn went there and its heart-tugging and real.
What makes this series so complete is that everyone that has had a story in the series, comes back for at least a scene or two. They all have a relevance to the next book. It was nice to see Bloom again. Each book deals with some sort of domestic violence to it and it is wonderful how Ms. Quinn deals with it. This one is tricky to review because the violence is directed toward Michael when he was a college student. I won’t go into detail because it would totally spoil it but let’s just say that he still deals with it every day since the accident. It’s heartbreaking for Michael and at times I felt like he was an enabler but in the end, it was up to the other person to deal with it.
The beach scene with Kacey and the boys…wow…I liked how the twist in the end came up and especially how Kacey dealt with it in the end. She showed compassion but also, she wanted justice. Michael wasn’t too sure about her decision but in the end, it was her decision. The romance in the book is evident from the beginning. Talk about two hard headed people that knew that they were falling in love with each but didn’t think they deserved the happiness that each one could bring the other. Especially Michael. He let his scars define him for too long but Kacey never show them. She only saw him for who and what he was.
The suspense angle is good, too. I kinda suspected the culprit but Ms. Quinn handled it well. You are fooling yourself is you are NOT reading this series. It’s powerful, emotional, romantic and just so well written. Ms. Quinn tackles the subject matter with a deft hand and also, with compassion for the victims. Bring on the next one. 😉
