Synopsis: Rose Morgeaux is a healer, not a killer, so training to fight is the last thing she wants to do. And if going against everything she believes in isn’t bad enough, she has to do it with the eyes of the dark and handsome Callahan McCray on her back.Cal’s seen the work of Warlocks firsthand when one killed his brother a year ago, so Rose’s hybrid heritage is all the reason he needs to stay away. Teaching her to throw a knife was not on his agenda, but neither was falling for her.
When Rose begins to pay a heavy price for her passions, Cal’s love must be enough to save her from herself and keep her from following in her grandfather’s dark footsteps.
EXCERPT #1:
“Practice. Raise the blade.” He stepped behind her and repositioned her shoulders. “Move the left leg like this, and the right leg like that.”
She mimicked his stance.
He touched her, his hands eased along her arms, and warmth followed in their path. “Like this?” she asked.
He grabbed her waist, and turned her ever so slightly, then leaned next to her ear. His breath tingled her cheek, and other places. “Just like this.” He turned his mouth toward her ear. “Throw.”
He stepped back.
She kept one eye open, and narrowed the other one, then threw. The blade hit hard, just slightly left of the bulls eye. Wow. Better. “Show me again? I think I missed a step.”
Cal shoved his hand through his thick hair, and moved behind her, repeating his touching her as she’d hoped. His hands pressed down her thighs. She positioned her legs where he guided them. The feeling of his lingering fingers near her ass heated her entire body.
“Bend your knees slightly.” He pushed her hips wanting her lower yet.
Tingles shot between her legs, down to her toes. Dear God. Was she panting?
“Aim,” he whispered next to her head. “Now throw.”
How could she focus with him touching her? She took a deep breath and threw. Bullseye. “Yes!” She jumped up and down and somehow ended up in Cal’s arms. “It worked.”
Cal lifted her off her feet. “Aye, I knew it would.”
He lowered her until her mouth was even with his, and she couldn’t control herself. She kissed him. He held her, her feet dangling, and kissed her back. He allowed her to slide until her feet touched the ground, pressing fully against him. She noticed—god, did she ever notice—he was ready.
After a minute, he pulled back. “Rose, don’t tempt me.”
She swallowed, trying to slow her breathing. Why did she ache so much? It was like she was a cat in heat, and no matter what she told herself, she wanted Cal. “I’m not.”
“You are,” He grabbed her wrist.
Okay, so I came late to the party with this series but trust me, I have the other two books to read now. Oh, how I love a good paranormal romance that doesn’t deal with any type of shifter. I like shifters but it is rare that I read about witches, warlocks, and spells. This book has it all…in spades.
What especially drew me into the story was the setting. New Orleans. Home of the voodoo, spells and anything else spooky and weird. Ms. Chartier has built a world that is believable, relatable and intriguing. I found myself wanting to be in this world, not just reading about it. Ms. Chartier has a way with words and they just flow off the page. Her characters are rich, have depth and are believable.
Rose doesn’t have it easy as the baby sister but careful of the quiet ones. They can be the most ruthless when backed in a corner. I loved how she fought against herself when it came to training, protecting the spells and fighting her attraction to Cal. Cal is just delicious but he has his own issues, too. Their internal dialogue was spot on but at times, I really did want to slap both of them to snap out it.
I can’t wait to read a book about the sister’s grandfather. I really did like the intrigue about the painting and how all three of the books concluded. Again, I didn’t read the first two books in the series but I have them now and plan on reading them soon. Ms. Chartier has written a great paranormal story that is emotional, at times raw but in the end, believable.
