Book Title: An Unexpected Sin
Series: Sins of Salem #2
Author: Sarah Ballance
Release Date: 4/14/14
Genre: Historical Romance
Book Synopsis:
Salem, Colonial
The moment the stranger’s dark eyes meet hers, Anne Scudder’s world is immediately overthrown by chaos. That single flare of desire is immediate, driving away all notions of propriety. Instead, Anne is consumed with sinful thoughts—ones that no unmarried girl should ever have for a man who isn’t her husband…
But Josiah Cromwell is no stranger.
It’s been six years since Josiah stole kisses from Anne, his best friend’s younger sister. Six years since Josiah left after his best friend’s death, burdened by the knowledge that he was responsible for destroying Anne’s family. Now he’s returned to claim the woman he can’t live without. But even as their desire threatens to consume them both—body and soul—the dark workings of suspicion and witchcraft are afoot.
Because in Salem, too much passion can lead a woman to ruin… and condemned to death.
This isn’t my first book by Ms. Ballance and it won’t be my last. She pulls you in from the beginning and never let’s go until the last word. What is especially awesome about her Sins of Salem series is the amount of detail and research that she has done in making you really feel like you are in Salem during the Witch Trails. You feel the whispers, the hunting and the guilt.
In Josiah and Anne’s book, there are whispers, lies, guilt and ultimately redemption and the truth about things that happened so long ago. *sigh* I will have to say that Anne’s mom was truly a character that I disliked from the beginning. Trust me, you will not like her and her reasoning behind the lies and then the truth are both heart breaking and then hurtful. At times I really wanted to slap her but in the end is sorta redeemed herself.
But what really sets this book apart from the pack is the emotions and history that Anne and Josiah have with one another. Its sweet, sexy and true. What started as innocence when they were children finishes with a bang. I loved their romance. While sweet, it was always sexy. Anne isn’t your typical “wallflower” either. She is headstrong, a “rogue” but also a Puritan at heart. Josiah is a breath of fresh air, too. He is Cambridge (Harvard) educated but also a Puritan, too. Plus, after reading his back story about his family, my heart brook for him. It feel that much guilt for most of his life and then to find out that it was a lie. Ugh!
OMG, I loved seeing Lydia again. I loved her in the first book in the series and it was great seeing how she was doing. Plus, we a feel for Prudence and I’m just waiting for her book. hint hint!
Overall, please do yourself a favor and read this series. You will be transported back to a very important part of American history that at times is sad, cruel, brutal but also loving. And Ms. Ballance just writes this time period brilliantly. 🙂
