Witnessing a private act leads to some interesting negotiations… Software programmer Veronica James is struggling to make her new business a success. Unfortunately, after finally landing a major account, she’s at risk of losing it all when she catches her new client Victor Rossi in a very compromising position. In an effort to regain the upper hand, Rossi insists on some very sexy and compromising concessions that have Veronica reconsidering her hard fast rule of not mixing business with pleasure.

Excerpt Three:

Her body ached and she felt frozen to the core. She hated being sick. The helplessness of it always made her want to scream out in frustration. She burrowed further into the blankets and tried to fight back tears.

Mother Nature was always the great equalizer thought Veronica. No matter how capable and strong you thought you were, Nature would bitch slap you with some virus, germ or otherwise generally hellacious ailment that had even the strongest person whimpering for their momma. Veronica had definitely reached that point.

She wished she hadn’t made Victor leave. As obnoxious as he was it did suck to be sick and alone. Tears fell down her cheeks unchecked and she just hoped that sleep would envelop her again.

“Hey, you’re awake.”

The sound Victor’s gruff voice almost made her sob out in relief.

“You’re still here,” she whispered.

“Of course, I am,” he said.

“I told you it was going to take a lot to make me leave,” he said as he leaned over her and touched his hand to her brow.

“You’re still really hot.”

“I don’t feel hot,” she said, “I feel like someone dumped a pile of ice on top of me.”

“Well to sound completely cliché, I know how to warm you up,” he said waggling his eyebrows at her and twisting his mouth into a comical leer.

“You’re a pervert,” she said with a small tired smile stretching her lips.

“You can’t blame a man for trying,” he said returning her smile.

“Like I said, pervert.”

I asked Laurel a question and I got more than I bargained for.  🙂

Blog Topic:  How much research did you have to do with Negotiating Skills?  Or better yet, how tech savvy are you?

I majored in Microbiology and Immunology in college and spent several years working in DNA research so I have no problem proudly proclaiming my love of all things tech and science related. I’m also more than a bit of a gadget whore, so when the general idea for Negotiating Skills started in my mind, I knew that at least one of the characters would share some of my “vices”. When I write I tend to pull from either experience or observation to mold my character profiles and Veronica just screamed computer programmer to me from the get go. I only dabble in the world of programming, so I only know how to make small applications and run simple scripts. My hubby on the other hand is a full fledged Software Developer so I picked his brain on a few of the more technical and logistic details for Negotiating Skills. And before you ask, yes I am a huge Dr. Who fan! I actually have a work in progress totally inspired by the Blink/Weeping Angels episode, which happens to be one of my favorite eps! Negotiating Skills is also the first in a series of novellas with an office romance theme. The next novella is titled High Stakes and the hero is an electrical and computer engineer. Who said alpha males couldn’t be techies too?

Review:

What can I say?  I’m a sucker for a workplace romance, especially when the heroine is just as equally strong as the hero.   Plus, mix in some hot sex, great dialogue and characters that I truly connected with and I’m there.

Victor is your typical alpha male in the world of business but when it comes to Veronica is a very tender but very determined male that likes what he sees and will almost stoop to the lowest to get her.  His “negotiating skills” are funny and sexy.  Also, the compromising position scene is sexy, hilarious (trust me) and very well written.  I can only imagine what my reaction would be.  🙂

Veronica “Ronnie” is a self assured, smart, sexy woman working in a field that is totally male dominated.  Knowing that she is just as good if not better than her male counterparts, she has a meeting with Victor to have him as a client.  For once in her professional life, she thinks about crossing the professional line with Victor but decides her career is more important.  Catching Victor in a very compromising position, the tables are turned.

I adored this book.  I instantly liked Victor and Ronnie from the first pages.  The sexual buildup was not hurried.  It was nice that Victor actually fell first and had to prove to Ronnie that he was serious about a relationship beyond the office with her.  The scenes were she was sick were priceless and tender.  *sigh*

The final “negotiation” was O.M.G. laugh out loud funny and sexy.  Ronnie nailed it and just proved that a woman can be smart, strong and sexy all at the same time.

This book is not to be missed if you like your hero and heroine strong, smart and sexy.  The negotiating skills that they exhibited are top notch and at times laugh out loud funny.

  1. Wow! Hot alpha FEMALE and beta male? My favorite combination! I need this book! And Dr. Who? We raised 4 kids who were schooled in various incarnations of the Dr. by us asking trivia questions around the campfire when we’d go camping. IE, what is the name of Lela’s tribe and what does it mean? Grin. Us and the Dr. go WAY back! Laurell, might you and I be separated at birth?

  2. Thanks for the great review and excerpt. I am not tech savvy at all. This book sounds fantastic. Can’t wait to read it.

  3. What a great review. Laurel…On a previous comment I wrote that I also HEART Dr. Who…but I’m not a fan of the weeping angels. They really freak me out and especially since they’re how we lost Amy & Rory. BOO!

  4. I adored this book. The ending was sexy and funny. 🙂 Plus, it was nice to see a woman in a man’s so-called world.

  5. Great post! I love gadgets but don’t have a lot of technical skills which just bugs me to no end when I need to get something done – sigh- Negotiating Skills sounds like a good office romance and I like those….

    1. Hi Maria, Your comment reminded me of my little sis. She is much the same with gadgets. She loves them but, the technicalities of troubleshooting annoy her. I guess the trick is getting a sister (like me) or finding a friend willing to help with the gadgets so that you can keep enjoying them 😉 But back on topic, I love office romances as well. I used to secret away a bunch of Penny Jordan Harlequins when I was in middle school 🙂
