EXCERPT
Dan smoothed out his smile and concentrated on Brooke. Her purple headband held the dark strands away from her face and emphasized her round deep brown eyes. Eyes he could fall into if he wasn’t careful and alert.
Brooke spoke, her voice hesitant. “Sophie called this morning.”
Dan pulled back. “Is Archie okay?”
Brooke blinked and focused on him. “He’s stable but Dr. Porter needs to keep Archie at least another night. Sophie called about Rex.”
Dan stumbled over his relief for a cat. Who was Rex? He had an image of a dog curled in the back of the kennel, more eyes than body.
Ben jumped up, worry flashing across his face. “What happened to Rex?”
“He isn’t doing well.” Brooke touched Ben’s shoulder. “Sophie had several more arrivals last night. Dr. Porter and Sophie think Rex needs to be someplace quieter, where he’ll feel safe.”
“He’ll feel safe here.” Confidence puffed Ben’s chest out.
Ben’s absolute certainty softened Dan. That was all he’d ever wanted to give Ben: a safe home. One without chaos. One with stability and love.
Brooke shifted to look at Dan.
Again, her dark brown gaze pulled him in. Her wide soulful eyes called to him. Made him want to learn everything about her. Made him want…
Yall, I have to admit that this is the best book in the series. Yes, I’ve read the others but this one has all the feels. I really connected with both Brooke and Dan. And also with Ben. Poor kid. I’m a diabetic so can I understand Dan’s concerns but at times, his inner dialogue got to me about how “safe” Ben needed to be. I deal with it on a daily basis and I know children at my school that do too. But I digress…
Ms. Webb deals with some serious PTSD with Brooke. I can’t even imagine what she went through with her house burning. Not to mention the trauma that she went through beforehand. It is pretty bad, too. She is a widower but I won’t tell you why. I really liked how Ms. Webb handled Brooke’s emotional state throughout the book. She had her two cats and one dog. And eventually got another dog. Pet rescues play a HUGE part in the book and it’s great to see Sophie and the Pampered Pooch back in this book. I really liked how Sophie is able to make Brooke feel comfortable in an uncomfortable situation with Brooke. It’s Brooke’s first true friend and I liked their friendship.
Dan is quite the hero in the book. Again, he is very protective of his son, Ben but at times it got on my nerves. That said, when his ex, Valerie, shows up, he goes all Papa Bear with good reason. And then he has to deal with his brother, Jason, too. I won’t tell you why but its a doozy. Jeez…Dan does have a heart when it comes to Brooke and her animals. At first, I didn’t think so but when the 3 legged cat started budding up to him, my heart melted a bit. He was patient with Brooke and didn’t push her into anything that she didn’t want to do. Quite the opposite. And its fun to see Ava push all of Dan’s buttons, too. I missed her.
Their relationship is steady and slow. Watching them fall in love and dealing with Valerie has adults is refreshing. Ms. Webb does a great job with Valerie. You will understand why they broke up and why she back in their lives. Sad, really but I can somewhat understand her motivation. Even if I thought she was the villain in the story.
Again, another awesome Harlequin Heartwarming. This line just keeps getting better and better. Again, this is my favorite of Ms. Webb’s in the series. I just really connected with everyone in the book. I can’t wait to see what Ms. Webb does next.
