A Stranger She Can Trust

GENRE: Romantic suspense

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Outside a busy Philadelphia nightclub, a woman stumbles from her taxi. Beaten and bruised, she is an amnesiac who must rely on a handsome stranger to help her uncover her identity. Carson Lane—a paramedic with his own dark history—can’t help but bring this beautiful, vulnerable woman under his wing. As they begin unraveling who she really is, he realizes falling in love could be the biggest risk of all.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt Three:

“Would you like us to take you home or call a friend or family member for you?” Grant asked.

A fresh bolt of panic shot through her like white-hot lightning streaking through a dark sky. The sensation left her gasping. She knew what they were asking. She knew what it meant to call someone. She just couldn’t remember the numbers or names that would connect her to someone familiar. The concept of family made her feel marginally better and a thousand times worse, though the word didn’t induce quite as much dread as friend did. Alexander was the name on the matchbook, and Grant and Carson were here and had been kind to her. Those three names were the extent of her world.

She wanted answers as much as the men asking the questions.

“No. I guess not.” She studied the man named Grant sitting behind his desk. The hard jaw and thick build gave off an air of no-nonsense toughness, but his warm brown gaze didn’t induce any fear, and the gray hair salting his temples added a trust factor.

“I can’t tell you where I live. I mean, I don’t know the answer.” She fisted her hands in frustration, and her short fingernails bit into her palms. “I don’t know who to call. The names…” Her breath rattled in and out of her chest. How could her head feel so full and empty at the same time? “The names are just gone,” she finished in a hoarse whisper.

Welcome Regan Black! Please start off by telling us a little about yourself.

Thanks so much for having me here and helping me celebrate the release of A Stranger She Can Trust today. I’m a wife and mom and I love spending the majority of my days in fictional worlds with imaginary friends under the ‘strict’ supervision of our greyhound, Bandit, and two cats.

Is A Stranger She Can Trust a single title, or part of a series?

This romantic suspense novel stands alone, but is part of the Escape Club Heroes mini-series. The premise of the Escape Club is a place where people can come for help with situations that might fall through the cracks of typical law enforcement. In addition, the club owner – a former police officer – often employs firefighters and other first responders when they are in tough situations.

Please share your setting for A Stranger She Can Trust. Have you ever lived or visited there? If so, what did you like most?

The book is set in Philadelphia and the club is located in a refurbished warehouse on a pier on the Delaware River. When I was little we lived in Philly for about a year and visited the Liberty Bell before it was moved to its current location. I was too young to remember much about that time, but we did recently visit the city as part of my son’s college search. I think Philly is a dynamic and fascinating city with the contrast of history and contemporary advances.

When did the writing bug first bite?

I’ve been in love with books for as long as I can remember. Reading and writing were a safe escape for me because I was a ridiculously shy child. Writing books wasn’t something I thought I had the time or talent for, but I’m very glad that a rather ‘desperate’ experiment when our kids were young revealed how much I enjoy crafting stories.

Who are you favorite authors, book/series?

A lifelong, avid reader, I have so many favorite authors and books and I adore historical romance novels. Sabrina Jeffries, Julia Quinn, and Lisa Kleypas would top that list. J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, pretty much anything Nora Roberts writes, the Isaac Bell novels by Clive Cussler, just to name a few.

If you could have an author roundtable discussion with any authors, who would you invite?

Ray Bradbury, Nora Roberts, Clive Cussler, Eloisa James, and C.S. Lewis.

Do you have any hobbies or special things you like to do in your spare time?

We enjoy spending time as a family playing video games, board games, and movies. We should probably post a sign warning visitors that any mention of Marvel or Star Wars will inevitably result in an hours-long discussion packed with opinions and theories. Unless it’s the hockey playoffs, then visitors should expect a distinct lack of conversation while the game is on.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve heard or seen?

Hahaha. In this age of the internet where the unexpected and bizarre is a mere click or search typo away? One of the funniest things I’ve ever seen was the time one of our foster greyhounds leaped onto the bathroom counter to admire her reflection.

What is the one thing that you would tell an aspiring writer to do?

I encourage aspiring writers with some of the best advice I received early on. Ask yourself what it is you’re writing when the story is flowing effortlessly. Write more of that.

The sooner we learn to honor and follow our natural strengths, the sooner we find the joy in our writing process and that joy makes all the difference as we build our skills and stories.

Oh, my.  I haven’t read a Romantic Suspense from Harlequin in a while and I’m sure glad that I read this one.  Ms. Black blew me away with Lissa and Carson.  The suspense was there in spades.  The action/danger…check.  The romance…not so much as a traditional romance but the respect, ying and yang of them…you bet.  Let me try to explain.

In romantic suspense, there are no flowers, unicorns or normally dating per se.  Ms. Black knows this but it’s the little things that Carson would do for Lissa.  His sister’s clothes for instance.  The oil that she needed to help her heal.  The comfort food.  It all added up to be romantic.  Lissa’s gestures of cooking, never giving him an inch when it came to his abilities to help other help and his paramedic skills.  Plus, the boldness that Lissa had in the truck.  Delicious, in my book.  It showed a side of her that I didn’t expect and it was welcomed.

I won’t go into the plot of the book but I will say that I loved that Carson’s partner, Sarah and Lissa’s friend, Noelle were connected.  You have to read the book to find out how but it made the plot that much richer.  It was almost like Carson and Lissa were destined to meet in a sense.  *wink*  Which, by the way, the plot was just too engrossing for me.  I never did figure it out until Ms. Black spelled it out for me.  Normally, I can figure it all out but not with this one.

I also liked the whole Escape Club.  Grant is awesome and I need to go back and read the other stories in the connected series.  The whole idea that the club is the central point intrigues me.  I haven’t read a connected romantic suspense series in a while and I will definitely be picking this one up.  Ms. Black kept me on my toes with how she plotted out this story.  The pacing is great, the characters wonderful, even if Lissa’s parents weren’t, and the action wasn’t too over the top.

If you haven’t discovered Harlequin’s Romantic Suspense line.  You should.  When I read Ms. Black’s backlist I about died.  She’s written with Debra Webb.  SQUEE!!!!!  She’s written in the Colby’s world.  *thud*

  1. “When I read Ms. Black’s backlist I about died. She’s written with Debra Webb. SQUEE!!!!! She’s written in the Colby’s world. *thud*” Oh, thank you for this, Harlie. I had a squee moment, followed by a thud when Deb invited me to write with her. I am a diehard Colby fan. 😀

    1. I’ve been reading that series for years. Unfortunately, I stopped a couple of years ago. Life got in the way, as it does. I will, however, start reading them again. Especially now that I know that you are part of it.

      I loved Carson and Lissa. The truck scene and the afterward…oh my. 😉
