“So you wish to be my lover, Mr. Ravenhill?” Two guileless pools of blue gazed back.

 

Damen gulped, shocked she’d put into words a thought he’d kept at bay since their first meeting. “No! That’s not what I… I mean, it’s not entirely… More to the point…”

 

He glanced around. A carriage quickly approached from the rear. Had they heard? The woman did not embrace subtlety or coy airs. He’d never considered himself easily surprised, but sometimes she said the most astounding things. Was she purposely trying to fluster him?

 

“Let me square away the team.” He rapped the reins, sending the horses into a trot down a side trail, hoping the distraction would give him time to collect his scattered thoughts.

 

She’d misconstrued his intensions; well, maybe not entirely, but he would now have to be very careful how he phrased his next question – one for which he desperately needed her agreement in order to find his brother’s assailants. He cut a quick glance toward her, while trying to determine her state of mind.

 

Was her little upturned nose twitching mischievously or was she deep in contemplation? He couldn’t tell. Tiny freckles scattered across her pronounced cheekbones. From the sides of her bonnet, unruly flaxen curls bounced in the breeze.

 

Her eyes sparkled as they traveled over his arms, across his shoulders and up his neck. With determination, he resisted falling into them.

Oh my, my, my.  When I agreed to review this book, I truly thought it was going to read like an erotic historical but oh man was I wrong.  Sensually written with characters that I cared about, this was so much more.  A bit of intrigue, suspense, romance and some twists that I never saw coming.  Truly a historical novel that needs to be read.

Sarah and Damen were a dream couple.  You would have thought that Sarah twice widowed would have been more dowdy or maybe even a bit “lose” in her ways.  Not so.  She’s smart, devoted and full of life.  Married way too young, twice, I could understand why she didn’t want to marry again but did want to have a bit of funny as her Aunt Eliza would say.

Damen, oh my Damen.  Of all the historical men that I have read throughout my years, he ranks up there in my top 5.  He is NOT what is expected in a historical novel.  Smart, quick to a fight (for all the right reasons), compassionate, sexy and above all, kind.  Yes, kind and caring.  He isn’t a rogue, rake or an alpha.  Just an all around great guy.  Oh and his sense of humor with his brother, Cory.  Those scenes had me giggling a bit.  You have to read it to understand.

This book managed to transport me for a couple of hours to a place where I could forget everything around me.  Historicals usually take me a few days to read but this one I read in a couple of hours.  Yes, I was that transfixed and enthralled.  Ms. Hanlen’s writing is smooth, lyrical and above all, exciting.  She reminded me that you don’t need all the details in a historical novel for a reader to feel, see and touch the time period.  Only a couple of authors that are auto-buys for me do that and now Ms. Hanlen’s is on that list.

If you are looking for a historical that will thrill you, make you sigh but above all, make you forget the world around you, this is for you.
