Flirting With Danger by Claire Baxter

About the book:

To be together is dangerous. To stay apart is impossible.

Firefighter Jasmine Mackinnon has always just been one of the guys. So no one’s more shocked than she is to find herself kissing fellow firefighter and all-around sinfully handsome playboy Aaron Parkes after a friend’s wedding. Jasmine knows she can’t risk an emotional connection with a colleague—a potentially dangerous entanglement when fighting fires together—and nothing’s more important to her than her job.

Aaron never noticed how beautiful Jasmine was until he saw her out of her firefighter duds, but there’s something about the fiery woman that tempts him. Though he knows pursuing a real relationship is out of the question for a serial dater like him, when their casual flirtation builds into something more serious, it’s not just their jobs or their safety on the line. It’s their hearts.

Review:

Have you ever picked up a book not really knowing what to think and when you close the book, its like you have read about two of your best friends?  This is how I feel about Aaron and Jasmine.  They are like your best friends that need a bit of push to see what they are missing in their lives.

Aaron being the somewhat serial dater and so-called ladies is at a crossroads of sorts.  Not realizing what he is missing from his life until he starts hanging around Jasmine, he decides that someone like Jasmine is worth it, if only she could see that she is more than capable.  I loved the fact that he had issues with loving someone who would lead to them leaving.  I had that same feeling with I lost both of grandfathers within two years of each other as a teenager myself.  It’s difficult to understand that when you are a teenager and Ms. Baxter handled it well.

Jasmine is me…in my 20’s and 30’s.  I felt like I had to prove to my mother that I was more than just a Barbie that she envisioned.  I could be one of the guys and not need any help from anyone.  Yes, it’s a slippery slope but in the end I realized that I did need help and that I could be feminine without losing that “capable” part of me.  Jasmine had it rough with a mother that was too selfish to care about her family.  Jasmine did have a loving father and four brothers that felt like they had to protect her but instead, she pushed them away at times.

I loved Jasmine’s family.  You could feel the love that they had for her and her for them.  The BBQ scenes were great.  Also, the secondary characters of Kane, Dave, Leanne and Sasha were great additions, too.  Sasha was too much at times.  🙂  Talk about a girlie girl but Jasmine needed her more than she thought.  Oh and I must find some plum shoes like Jasmine’s.  And they plum dress.  Pencil skirt with a slit.  That’s my kind of dress.

One of the best parts of the book was the build up of their relationship.  Sure they had a working relationship but watching Aaron and Jasmine fall in love was spectacular.  Ms. Baxter took her time with them and didn’t rush them.  They needed to feel the rush of falling for someone and what it would feel like to fully love someone without the fear of losing them.

Both Aaron and Jasmine had some growing up to do in regards their personal relationships.  Again, Ms. Baxter took her time and fleshed them out.  No instalove/lust, plus if you are expecting sex…it’s not here.  That’s what is so beautiful about Aaron and Jasmine.  Their story didn’t need it.  They need the emotional connection with each other outside of work and you get that with them in spades.

I highly recommend that you pick up Flirting with Danger.  You will not be disappointed in it but then I’m never disappointed in a Bliss book.  😉

  1. Here lately, I’ve begun to appreciate contemporary romance, more and more. I am currently searching for “new2me” authors to feed my growing addiction. A sexy firefighter will fit the bill quite nicely.

  2. Claire…I live near the beach, too…and enjoy long walks when I can make the time. SOMEHOW, though, an Australian beach sounds much more exotic than my North Carolina beach! LOL. I’m interested to read about a gal firefighter!
