Where has Lexi Ryan been all my life? I know. I live under a rock most days. Plus, since I’m not one of the “popular” blogs nor do I live on social media, I miss out on certain authors and books. When I got the opportunity to read Nic and Ethan’s story, I jumped on it. I dove in head first because, of course, I didn’t know what to expect. Honestly, I read this book in one sitting. Yes, one sitting. I become so engrossed that I got up one time to use the bathroom and that’s it. It’s been a while since a new author has done that for me.
There is something to be said about the blurb, too. Ms. Ryan took a touching subject and made it somewhat heartbreaking but funny at the same time. And I really don’t think that I even like Ronnie even after I read the book but I will definitely give her a chance if she pops up again. I just felt like Nic should have said something earlier. I can’t stand heroines that have siblings that are douches and Ronnie is a douche. In the end though, Nic finally said her peace but I still don’t trust Ronnie. Anyway…my one compliant if any.
Ethan is a dream. But he is flawed. Damaged and unable to let go. The subject or secret that Ethan and Nicole both deal with in the book is beautifully written. Ms. Ryan writes it with understanding and depth that isn’t heavy handed. Plus, Ethan has his own problems with his mom and how he lives day to day. Oh yes, Ethan’s side of the story is more complicated with all the secrets that are going on. But oh the payoff in the end is definitely worth it. I honestly didn’t expect to fall for Ethan’s entire family but I did. We get to know Levi, Jake (*swoon*), and Shay pretty well and I can’t wait for thier books. Okay, maybe not Shay’s (*sad face*) but the brothers will bring some serious sexiness to them. Ethan might have the job and the only grandchild but he isn’t perfect. I like not perfect heroes. They don’t have to have the standard romance hangups like addiction, abuse, etc. I just like a man that is dealing with grown up issues. And yes, what Ethan and Nicole are dealing with is grown up.
All that said, I will read anything that Ms. Ryan will write. Her style, humor, emotions and how she immediately made me care for the characters is something that I look for in any book but with Ms. Ryan…just wow. I know, I need to get out more and I’m trying. Another thing really struck me with Ms. Ryan is that while we get to know the secondary characters pretty well, they don’t overpower the story. Teagan!!! OMG!!!! No filter. Ava and the turkey baster in the bar. Jake with his goat cheese balls. Levi having the hots for Nic just to piss off Ethan. But again, they don’t overpower, just enhance the story in ways that a lot of authors just don’t get when dealing with a large family.
My heart aches in places that I didn’t think it would. Ms. Ryan had me sniffling, laughing and sighing in the end of Ethan and Nic’s story. I never once felt sorry for either one of them but I felt like they were the ying to each other’s yang. It just took a while to get there. And a couple of lies. Good lies.
I know I tell you to go out and read the book that I review but seriously…if you have never read Ms. Ryan, you need to. She just “got” me when it comes to the trope, the characters, the emotions, sexy times, well…everything. I can’t wait for the other brothers books to release. I’ll pre-order. And no, I never pre-order anything.
