No Angels for Christmas

by Petie McCarty

GENRE:   Contemporary Romance with suspenseful elements

No Angels for Christmas . . . a cozy romantic mystery with suspense from The Mystery Angel Romances series. An angel hidden in every book waiting for you to figure who . . .

Child psychologist Rachel Kelly isn’t quite sure how to handle the situation with her newest client — a six-year-old boy who says he can talk to angels and one is coming to help Rachel. She already has her hands full of trouble this Christmas season, and things quickly take a turn for the worse when a stalker crashes Rachel’s Christmas party and takes her young clients hostage.

Police negotiator, Lt. Jake Dillon, walked away from his fiancée Rachel when she suddenly balked at having kids. His kids. Yet when the hostage crisis erupts, Rachel calls Jake first. Now he has a choice to make — stand back and wait for the cavalry to save Rachel or step in and try to save her himself. Time is running out, and Jake may be their only chance for rescue.

Unless Rachel’s little angel-spying client is telling the truth…

Excerpt Three:

“Since this isn’t our Publix, I’m assuming you stopped on your way home from work,” Jake said when she reached his side.

Our Publix? Did he even realize he’d said that?

“You’re right,” she replied. “So why are you here?”

“My apartment’s just around the corner.”

That simple statement shouldn’t hurt—she knew his apartment was near here—but it did. She nodded.

“I’ll help you out.” He gently nudged her hands off the cart handle and took over, setting his own bag on top of her stack.

Rachel paced alongside the grocery cart as they moved through the electronic door and knew a moment of joy that her parking spot lay at the far end of the lot. She would have a few extra moments to be with him. How pitiful was that? She eased a step closer, anxious to inhale his unique scent of soap, aftershave, and pure Jake.

He glanced over and caught her staring. Heat rushed to her cheeks, and she hoped he didn’t notice the flush.

“Jake, look out!” She grabbed the cart to stop it just short of a car backing out.

He gave her his sexy crooked Jake-smile. “Guess I should keep my eyes on the road.”

Her heart ka-thumped inside her chest. “At least until we get to the car.”

His smile went to an all-out grin.

Had she just flirted with him? Had it been that easy to get past her trauma for a few brief minutes?

Far sooner than she would have liked, he stopped the grocery cart next to her Honda and helped stow her bags in the trunk, leaving his in the cart.

“Thanks for helping me,” Rachel told him.

“I’m glad you decided to stop at this Publix tonight.”

“You are?”

“Yeah. I’m glad I got to see you.” Jake grazed a knuckle gently across her cheek leaving a streak of tingly nerve endings in its wake.

“But I thought you wanted . . . I mean, I haven’t heard from you . . .” She cleared her throat. “. . . in a long time. I thought you might’ve . . .”

Why couldn’t she finish a sentence tonight? Bad enough she felt pathetic, now she sounded pathetic.

“You thought I might’ve what?”

She swallowed hard. “Might’ve found someone else by now.”

He studied her for a long moment. “After all we meant to each other, you thought I’d go right out and grab a new girlfriend, just like that?” His mouth tightened to a thin line.

She hadn’t meant to rile him. The last thing she wanted to do was fight with him. Without thinking, she reached up and brushed two fingers gently across his lips, wanting that sensuous mouth to smile at her again.

She startled him, and he jerked at her touch. She whisked her fingers away. “Sorry. I don’t want you to be mad.”

His gaze trapped hers, his pupils expanding until little of the brilliant green remained. “There’s no new girlfriend, Rachel,” he said gruffly.

He slowly shook his head, his all-dark eyes tracking hers. He seemed closer than he’d been a minute earlier.

She exhaled hard. “Not yet anyway.”

He frowned.

Why had she said that?

“No, not yet,” he said flatly.

“I’m glad,” she said quickly.

Screw pride.

“Are you?”

He was definitely closer now. If she eased forward just a few inches, she could press her lips to his, feel that certain sizzle that always flared when they touched. But Jake had walked out on her. His move. Though she ached with the need to hold him, if only for a second.

“Yes. Very glad. I don’t want you to find someone else—”

His lips brushed hers into silence—sweeping gently across as though seeking permission—the touch just light enough to make her lean in for more. He didn’t miss the movement and kissed her again, his lips settling on hers and nibbling at her lower lip.

The sensuous teasing had her knees growing weak, and she grabbed the placket of his dress shirt to steady herself.

He didn’t miss that movement either, and he cradled her cheeks in his big palms to deepen the kiss.

Suddenly lightheaded with desire, she twisted her knuckles into his shirt to keep him close. She didn’t care if they were kissing in front of God and everybody. If Jake wanted to throw her down here in the middle of the Publix parking lot, she was ready. She could always shop at Winn-Dixie.

Admittedly, this is not my first book by Ms. McCarty and this is the second book in a nonconnected series that I have read.  Ms. McCarty just keeps getting better and better with her storytelling and characters.  I will warn you though, this book has a lot of characters so you really need to pay attention when you read it.  Did I figure out the angel in this story?  Not a chance but when it was revealed I was actually shocked.  I would also say that this book has romantic elements, not a full-blown romance.  Jake and Rachel have a lot to go through before you get the big payoff and its worth it in the end.

Jake and Rachel have broken up at the beginning of the book and only the reader and Rachel know why.  Poor Jake.  He just can’t get a break with Rachel and their relationship.  Miscommunication is a big thing with these two and a time or two, I just wanted to bash them in the head but then there would be no story to finish.  🙂  Both have huge hearts when it comes to their jobs and it shows but when it comes to each other, not so much.  I won’t tell you the reason why they broke up but I understand it.  It’s just that Rachel really needed to be honest with Jake from the beginning.

The mystery and suspense in the book are fantastic.  Taut and suspenseful, I honestly didn’t know how it was all going to play out in the end.  Truly, I didn’t.  Just when you think the story is over, there are two more very important scenes that are just terrific and really solidified the book for me.  The kids in the book, Chad, Emily and Alex are dealing with some issues that are not easy to read in the book.  From physical abuse, a child pedophile and then just thinking your child is crazy because he can see angels.  Ms. McCarty has done her research and it shows.  Bravo and I loved how the kids bounded in the end.  Especially Chad and Emily.  Brought a smile to my face.

Overall, I really liked No Angels for Christmas.  Ms. McCarty knows how to write a book and keep the reader engaged.  This is not an easy book to read in parts but well worth it in the end.  Plus, Jake and Rachel…well, you need to read it.  Enjoy.

Excerpt Three:

Lisa parted her lips to say something. Maybe she was going to protest about his wet clothes. No. He’d had enough talking. He bent and touched her mouth. He meant it to be a quick, stolen kiss, but as soon as he tasted her he wanted more. This might be his only chance.

She gripped his shoulders before her arms slid around him, tightening as though afraid he’d disappear. Forever they stood their tongues tangling together until he could take no more of the heat, the urgency. His fingers were entwined in her hair holding on to her. Never letting her go. The need to run his free hand over each part of her body and listen to her gasps grew into full-blown lust.

“Upstairs,” he said, his voice hoarse.

“Three floors?” She tipped her head back and raised her brows.

“Right.” Five years. Five years without her. He fisted the ends of her white button-down shirt in both his hands before whipping it open. Buttons popped off and dinged on the wooden surface. Underneath she wore a blue lacy bra.

Banks’s entire unit couldn’t stop him now. He yanked off her top, tossed it aside, and swallowed to keep his tongue in his mouth. “Way too far.” He lowered Lisa stared up at him. Her brown eyes were full of questions and a sadness he longed to erase. Had she thought of him much during the years he’d been away?

Okay, so I lied.  I totally forgot that I had this post to do.  Happy New Year!  So, I read this book over the holidays.  I needed something to cleanse the palette after the holidays.  My holiday was interesting, to say the least, so I need a mystery/suspense book and Ms. LeDuc delivered.  I normally don’t read “mystery” books.  Yes, I don’t read the cozy ones either but I really liked this one.  It had some suspense elements in it, too and don’t worry about the romance taking over.  It doesn’t.  In fact, I worried about a bit that maybe Lisa and Travis wouldn’t get that “second chance” in the romantic department.

You need to go into the book with the mindset that Lisa was extremely tormented when she was kidnapped.  It was horrific and Ms. LeDuc does a great job of letting us know in small doses what happened to her and her recovery from it.  Travis is the misunderstood bad boy that she dated and is now back in her life when her kidnapper escapes.  I really liked both of them, separately and together.  The relationship between is completely understandable and plausible.  Between Travis being snarky know it all to the cops (trust me, its funny at times) and Lisa’s strength, they are great!

The mystery is pretty straightforward when it comes to her captor but Ms. LeDuc throws in a COMPLETELY different spin and I was way off base when I thought I had figured it out.  I can pretty much figure out but this time…nope.  I was dumbfounded but in a good way.  I loved it and it made sense.  What a tool.  The ending is fantastic, too.  Ms. LeDuc throws in some really creepy scenes and her writing flowed like a fog settling in for a spell.

Do yourself a favor and pick this gem of mystery/romantic suspense.  You will love watching Travis and Lisa learn from past mistakes, take a chance on love and come out stronger in the end.

The elevator doors slid open and Jonas stepped into the entryway. It was dark and quiet, the only sound coming from the direction of Matthias’s room. That kid never slept no matter what time of day it was, but he also didn’t ask questions. So he was off the hook.  Then he stepped into the living room and was confronted with a tight, toned ass in
skintight leggings.
All the parts of him that had been asleep fired to life. Jonas sucked in a deep breath as JJ shifted her position at the window, the globes of her ass bouncing slightly with the movement.  His dick tried to follow her. It should have been a welcome diversion. Hell, at least he wasn’t depressed and feeling the sting of failure anymore. But this was JJ. The woman lived to torment him. So as spectacular as that ass was, it was the last thing he wanted to see in the middle of the night coming off a tough case.
“Why are you still awake?”
It came out harsher than he’d intended, but there was no need to apologize. JJ didn’t offend easily, probably because she thrived on insults and could throw out verbal daggers with the best of them. As he’d expected, she merely turned her head slightly to acknowledge his presence before turning back to the night sky, dismissing him.
“Why can’t you mind your own business?” she asked in a deceptively sweet voice.
Never mind that just a few moments ago, Jonas had wanted nothing more than to climb into bed without having to engage anyone. Now he stepped farther into the room,
instinctively drawn to her. There was just something about Jessica Jones that he could not resist. It was sick in a way, but he got off on fighting with her. That smart mouth and those killer curves were the perfect combination to make his dick hard while simultaneously pissing him off.
It was a heady combination.
“What would be the fun in that?” Jonas asked, speaking truthfully.
She turned from whatever it was that was holding her attention outside and eyed him with a sneer. “I would ask if you had a hot date but that’s doubtful. Jackasses really
aren’t in this season.”
Now that hurt.
“Women love me.”
She sniffed and slid him a sidelong glance.
“Frankly, I don’t see the appeal. But then again there are people who like candy corn and peeps. There’s really no accounting for taste…or lack thereof.”  “Hey! Candy corn is awesome.”
Jonas might have to rethink his taste in women if she was dogging on candy corn. How could you not enjoy something that was pure high-octane sugar?
“You’re probably just too bitter to enjoy it.”
Her eyes flashed and for a moment there was something behind the look that made him regret his choice of words.
“Too bad for you, you’ll never have a taste.”
Her words carried a hint of hurt with them and he wanted to bite off his tongue. They snarked at each other and played fast and loose with their words, but he would never actually want to hurt her. It bothered him that he even could. In his mind, JJ was as invincible as her comic book character namesake, and finding a chink in her armor was both disturbing and endearing.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean anything by that.”
“Whatever. You’re probably right. I’ll leave the sweetness to you. I just happen to like my men a little bit…stronger with a hint of a bite. Same way I like my whiskey.”
Wow, just wow.  I knew going in that this was going to be a hell of a ride.  A sexy ride, too.  But never did I see the ending like that.  M & Nana know how to leave you hanging with your mouth open when it comes to a cliffhanger.  Oh yes, there is a cliffhanger but trust me, you will NOT throw your reading device.  I have the second book in the series but I haven’t started it yet.  I read their first series, Shameless and every time they left me hanging but it was a good hang.  I craved the next book and the final book was a complete OMFG!  I never saw the ending coming and I have a feeling that Jonas and JJ’s story will be just like that.
Let me back up a bit.  This duet is a sort of a sequel to the Shameless trilogy but it can be read as a standalone.  M & Nana have created a world that I love, characters that make me smile, cry, laugh, and fall in love with.  Oskar, Matthias, Noah, Lucia, and Rafe are back.  Jonas is one of the team members of Blake Security and JJ is Lucia’s best friend.  I won’t go into detail about the set up of the world but if ex-assassins, guys that have blood on their hands and they are trying to do right, then these two series are not for you.  That said, once you read Jonas’ back story, you might cry a bit.  JJ’s is just as sad but it is what ultimately brings them together.
There are bits of suspense in the book and they are great.  What I loved about this books is the trope itself…enemies to lovers.  JJ is not one stay put for long and Jonas is wanting to stay put for once.  He’s jealous of what Lucia and Noah have and wants that with JJ.  Too bad JJ doesn’t get the memo.  Their banter, bickering, loving and sweetness is tough to beat.  M & Nana have done a wonderful job developing them as more complex than they seem.
I can’t wait to read how their story plays out in book 2.  I have not worries going in because M & Nana have never steered me wrong in their writing.  I’m just wondering which team member they will pick next.  😉

USA Today bestselling author Nana Malone’s love of all things romance and adventure started with a tattered romantic suspense novel she “borrowed” from her cousin.
