Getting involved shouldn’t be this dangerous…

Cate Sullivan is no damsel in distress. She’s kept herself and her son safe for six long years. Built a good life in Indian Lake. But now that her drug-dealing ex-husband is moving his operation here, that life is about to explode.

Her instincts tell her to trust Detective Trent Davis. That he’s more than just a handsome cop doing his duty. The former Green Beret has even formed a fast bond with her son. But there’s something he’s not telling her. Some darkness that keeps him from giving in to the feelings she knows are growing between them. Cate trusts Trent to keep her safe, but the real question is whether he’ll trust himself with her heart.

Oh my gosh.  Stop what you are doing now and buy this book.  Don’t put it on the TBR pile.  Pour yourself a glass of wine, or ice tea, get comfy and spend a couple of hours in complete bliss with Trent, Cate, and Danny.  You will thank me later and you’re welcome.  Of course, since this is my first book in the series, I need to go and get Sophie’s and Katia’s books.  Yes, this book is that good that I want to read the other books.  I’m a series reader.  Yes, I admit it.  And even though, Ms. Lanigan does a great job of letting us know about the other characters in town, I really want to read their stories, too.

So getting back to the story of Trent (*swoon*), Cate, and Danny.  I’m not sure where to start when it comes to this book.  It grabbed me from the beginning and never let go.  I know, I say that often, but seriously, this book never really lets up.  The suspense element is present throughout the story.  The romance aspect and the romance just sneak up on you and then you realize that you are reading a very good romantic suspense book that doesn’t involve a bunch of violence, sex, and filler that doesn’t need to be there.  The suspense is realistic, the romance slow and real and the emotions that Cate and Trent fight and eventually lose are real, too.  These two fight the feelings that they are feeling for each other but for different reasons.

Trent has PTSD and feels like he doesn’t deserve to be loved and Cate, she’s been running from her old life and protecting her son, Danny, that she never thought that she could actually have the love of man in her life.  Her ex is just a piece of **** that I can honestly understand where she is coming from in that respect.  I really felt like she could have that with Trent.  Its all about trust with these two.  I’m talking the ultimate in trusting.  With your life, your son’s life and everything that you have built.

The secondary characters are great.  Mrs. Beabots is a hoot.  For some reason, I expected her to pull out her gun but sadly she didn’t.  Thanksgiving…oh my.  And her Christmas tree?  A Jackie tree?  The other secondary characters are good, too.  Alice and Danny?  Who knew at that age.  The residents of Indian Lake will take hold you and not let you go.  You want to know them, be friends with them and live among them.

The climax of the book is exciting, scary and beautifully written.  I really felt for Trent and Cate has they finally realized that they were truly in love with each other and would sacrifice whatever they could to be with each other.  The romance is slow and beautiful, the suspense is real and terrifying and you have characters that have real problems but don’t realize that they need each other to work through them and feel whole again.

Again, buy this book, read this book and try, just try to disagree with me.  You’re welcome.  And now I’m hungry for a tuna salad sandwich with an avocado spread.  😉

#Review of Risk and Reward by Rachael Duncan w/a rafflecopter giveaway! @RachaelAuthor

Title: Risk and Reward
Author: Rachael Duncan
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: March 6, 2017

Grass isn’t always greener…

DIVORCE.

I never dreamed this would become my reality.
But it is.
After feeling neglected and alone for far too long, I end it,
Blindsiding my husband in the process.
He’s hurt, torn, and confused,
Never expecting me to leave.
His pain tears at my heart, begs me to stay.
And I almost do.
Almost.

Moving on isn’t as easy as it seems.
The memories tap at my conscience,
Reminding me of what I’m missing,
What I used to have.
But, I walked away,
From the man I promised forever,
Possibly making the worst mistake of my life.

I’ve let go, given myself a promise of a new life, new hope.
But does the other side have more risk than reward?

Words can not describe how much I LOVED this book.  Ms. Duncan is a new to me author and trust me, I will reading Lydia and Marcus’ story.  Plus, if you read the snippet of Paige’s story…DANG!  That one is going to be a doozy.  I just fell in love with Sean.  But I digress…on to my review.
I love the second chance trope…when done right.  This one is done right and more.  It deals with a married couple and the wife feeling neglected and decides that she wants a divorce.  No talking to the husband, just that see wants a divorce.  Okay, so there is NO communication and after being together 8 years, Charlotte’s had enough.  Poor Nate.  Blindsided like that.  Poor dude never knew what hit him and I think it was a little unfair to him but then hey, there wouldn’t be a story.  I loved how their back story was told in flashbacks.  With every little thing that Charlotte tried with her new beau, Ethan, it just brought up memories of Nate.  Plus, it didn’t hurt that everything that she felt for Nate, she never felt with Ethan.
Ethan is a creeper and I had that part pretty much figured out.  What I didn’t know was to the lengths that he would go to.  There are two parts that COULD be triggers for some and one of them…heinous.  Evil to the max.  I liked getting to know Marcus during this time and it made me want his story with Lydia that much more.  The suspense element that Ms. Duncan wove in with Ethan is spot on.  Not too heavy but creepy nonetheless.  Great job.
The girls are great.  Lydia, Scarlett, and Paige.  I want those girls in my corner when push comes to shove.  They never made Charlotte feel bad for her actions or her thoughts.  They supported her in whatever she decided to do.  Well, maybe not with Ethan but you just have to read that part of the book.  😉
Overall, I really enjoyed this second chance romance.  It had a creeper, sexy times, a real romance, a dog, babies and a hero and heroine to really root for.  This book is definitely on my keeper shelf.

Like buy the book now. You’re welcome!

It’s easy to recognize the bad when you’re in the moment. All the good is erased and you’re blinded by the negative. Each fight, every moment of hurt starts as a small scab. If taken care of, it’ll heal. But the more you pick, the worse it gets until it festers and infects everything. Is that what I let happen to my marriage? What if I had tried to fix my initial hurt instead of internalizing and letting it fester?

Rachael Duncan is an Army wife and mother to two beautiful girls. She grew up in Nashville, Tennessee and went off to graduate from the University of Tennessee with a bachelor’s degree in political science. With initial plans to work in politics, she moved to Washington, D.C. and worked on Capitol Hill for a House Representative. After a short time, she realized it wasn’t for her and began pursuing other careers until she started writing. She’s the author of Tackled by Love, The Lies and Truth Series, and Hopeless Vows.
