The Secrets Between Us

by Katie Mettner

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Contemporary Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Of three things I was certain…

The first?

Mercy was exquisite in the most devastatingly broken way.

The second?

I didn’t know how to love, but for the first time in my life, I wanted to try.

The third?

The secrets between us could tear us apart forever.

I wouldn’t let that happen.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
“I came by to apologize,” he said, relaxing back in the chair like he owned the place.
“For?” I asked, sitting across from him in the other club chair.
“For being rude the other night,” he answered. “I’ve found myself in a bit of a surly mood lately and I apologize if I took it out on you.”
I bit my lower lip and tipped my head to the right. “Same, actually. Truce?” I asked, sticking out my left hand.
He leaned forward and shook it, somewhat awkwardly. “Truce.”
“Great, how about a drink then?” I asked before I thought too hard about it.
“I could definitely use one,” he agreed. “What do you have?”
“Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, or Captain Morgan,” I answered instantly.
His brow went up. “Clearly, you like the boys. I guess I don’t have to worry about you being a lesbian.”
A smirk lifted one side of my lips. “I’m strictly dickly.” I stood and walked to the kitchen door. “Now, who will it be?”
“Jack and Coke?” he ordered, and I walked off to the kitchen nodding.
“Be right back,” I said over my shoulder.
Once alone in the kitchen I blew out a long, slow, unsteady breath. The fact that I had a man in my living room was unnerving. The fact that it was him was terrifying. And, strictly dickly? Did I say that?
Welcome Katie Mettner! Please start off by telling us a little about yourself.
Thank you for hosting me and The Secrets Between Us on your blog today! My name is Katie Mettner and I live in a little house on the lake in Northern Wisconsin. I’m a wife for nineteen years and a mother of three teenagers. I have one very special lizard, Leroy Jethro Gibbs. I am a left leg amputee and love picking a new pattern or design for my prosthesis when I get a new one! My current leg is black carbon fiber with rainbow music notes and staffs. I’ve been writing for eight years and just finished my 42nd book!
Is The Secrets Between Us a single title, or part of a series?
Right now it’s a stand-alone. I am tossing around writing a second book about his brother, Caleb. I thought I would wait and see what the readers thought about that before I did. 😊
What were your inspirations for the story?
I wrote The Secrets Between Us based on a writing prompt that read, “A rich guy goes off and hides in a place that would be totally out of character for him.” I then happened to see a stock photo of a guy in a trapper hat and the whole story fell into place. I had to put a billionaire CEO into a fishing camp in the middle of North Dakota just to see what happened.
Please share your setting for The Secrets Between Us. Have you ever lived or visited there? If so, what did you like most?
The setting is a fictional fishing camp in Cashmere Creek, North Dakota, which is also a fake town. I always write about the Midwest, and while Cashmere Creek is fake, I have been to North Dakota. I based it off the Devils Lake area. I love the wide open spaces, the beauty of pristine snow, and the expanse of a frozen lake as the perfect setting for a romance novel! If you’ve ever been to North Dakota, you know they have all three there.
When did the writing bug first bite?
I’ve always loved to write, but I didn’t get the true bug until after I published my first novel, Sugar’s Dance. I always intended that to be my first and last novel (Which is why it’s so long!) I never expected to be sitting here having just finished my 42nd book in eight years. I would say that’s the true definition of the writing bug.
Who are you favorite authors, book/series?
My favorite authors are Lisa Regan and any of her books. Dana Mason and her series. I’m unashamed to admit that I love Janet Evanovich and her Stephanie Plum series. Even if they are repetitive blah blah, they make me laugh. I also love anything by Jill Shalvis. I read a ton of indie authors more than I read the big names. I feel like we know what we are getting with the Big 5. I’m always out there looking for the unsung writers with great stories to tell.
If you could have an author roundtable discussion with any authors, who would you invite?
Oh boy, let’s go, girls! I would definitely invite Nora Roberts, Jill Shalvis, Lisa Regan, Dana Mason, Janet Evanovich, Brian Freeman, Katy Evans, Jan Romes, Chloe Kendrick, Gemma Halliday, Colleen Hoover, Sandra Brown, and Mary Beth Keane.
Do you have any hobbies or special things you like to do in your spare time?
I have three kids and one in college, so my spare time is limited. Usually, I’m at a band concert, marching band game, or vocal concert. When I’m home I love to bake cakes, crochet and read, of course! I also love watching old shows like Chuck and How I Met Your Mother. I may know how the series ended, but when I watch them a second time, I’m always catching that ‘Aha’ moment so much sooner. Kind of the same way it happens in books when you reread them.
What’s the strangest thing you’ve heard or seen?
Before I was married, about 20 years ago, I was living in Wisconsin on a large chain of lakes. I took my dog for a walk down to the lake and laying on our dock was a mountain lion. Not a lynx or a bobcat, but a flipping mountain lion! It was just laying there sunning itself like it wasn’t in the entirely wrong part of the country! I had to grab my dog and back up the hill slowly so we didn’t catch it’s attention. People see them more around here on their trail cams now, but back then, that was one strange sight on a Monday morning!
What is the one thing that you would tell an inspiring writer to do?
Write to write, don’t write to make money. If you’re writing for the sole purpose of making money you’re going to be disappointed. If you’re writing to tell a story somewhere deep inside you, and you don’t care if it hits #200 or #1, then you’re doing it for the right reasons. Follow your heart and write on. You’ll find what you’re looking for if you stay true to the reason you’re doing it.
Yall, this book.  I cried.  Not an ugly cry but it did make me cry.  This book is about redemption, the forgiveness of one’s self and learning how to love again.   Plus, learning how to love yourself again, regardless of how life has treated you in the past.  These two had a lot of baggage to overcome to even think about having a real relationship with each other and in the end, their HEA is hard-fought and heartfelt.  These two had me at the beginning and never let me go.
Hayes is a very flawed but humble character.  He knows his flaws and why the way he is and doesn’t really know how to get out of it.  That is until he meets Mercy.  He wants to be better, trys to do better but in the end, he’s human and makes mistakes.  Near the end of the book when he is laying it out for her, my heart grows so full from the emotion that he poured out of his heart.  I never thought he was wrong in the way he treated Mercy in the end but he needed to realize that he could love someone and indeed fell in love with Mercy.
Mercy is a heroine that I just wanted to give a big hug to and say, it is NOT your fault.  It’s not your fault.  Feeling like she is unworthy of love from anyone, she had to realize that Hayes wasn’t just there for a good time.  Ms. Mettner took her time with Mercy throughout the book revealing her backstory, bit by bit when it needed to explain why Mercy would shrink back from Hayes at times.  I never pitied her either.  In fact, I never realize that she was an amputee until it was brought up by Hayes.
This book deals with some very heavy issues:  domestic abuse and murder.  Ms. Mettner never goes too dark with the subject matter but instead treats it like its a fact of life for Hayes and Mercy.  They that Hayes and Mercy deal with it are completely different but the need to get past it is a long hard road.  The emotions that are wrung from their conversations are wrenching but also cleansing.  I never pitied either one of them for their actions and completely understood them in the end.
Ms. Mettner is a new to me author that I can’t wait to read again.  The secondary characters are few but Caleb, Ange, and Mr. Bolling are great.  They not only enhance the main characters but add to some of the crucial plot points in the end.  Beast is hilarious, too.  While this is a billionaire type book, Hayes is not a douche.  He’s a real person with real feelings, finally, and doesn’t know how to act.  Loyal and faithful to his family and in the end Mercy.
Do yourself a favor and pick this gem up.  I dare you not to cry in parts.  The dialogue between Hayes and Mercy is HILARIOUS!!  (see above excerpt and that’s just a snippet)  The love scenes are emotional and spicy but nothing too hawt.  Ms. Mettner has written a book that I will definitely read again.  And yes, a Caleb book would be good.  He can’t be all that happy all the time.  LOL!
Anna has plans for her life. This fall, she will be heading off to medical school, well on her way to becoming a doctor. But first, she and her besties head to Ireland to celebrate.
Nowhere did her future plans even include serious dating, let alone becoming mated to a man who can turn into a freaking beast with wings. Nor did she reckon with being sucked through a portal onto another planet while on her way home from a great night out.
Yet from the very first time her new mate touches her, Anna wonders if this could be the real deal – as in: the big L. The only problem is, her mate says his kind do not love; they protect, they pleasure, and they provide. Can Anna really kiss goodbye to all her plans for the future, and agree to spend the rest of her existence without love?
Publisher’s Note: This steamy paranormal romance, while the third in the Alcyran Chronicles series, can be read and enjoyed as a standalone.
D’Vorak launched himself off the rooftop, took to the air, and sniffed the wind. He soared like a ghostly specter, blending in with the night. On the streets below, the people never glanced up as he glided above. Perhaps that was why they didn’t know their world was dying. They were too involved with what was right in front of them to view the larger picture.
Working with Rhiannon was risky. He understood the perils of trusting the Clovis wench. However, she had promised that if he succeeded in this task, she would sever his people’s ties with the Clovis. That must happen before the truth of the Gūla was discovered—the truth they had kept hidden, the weapons they had forged.
All he had to do was find the three women and take them to his planet. Three particular women whom Rhiannon indicated were descended from the original line of Clovis. Earth had been the home world for the Clovis before they discovered the wormhole to Destruna, another realm, another world where they weren’t persecuted and fled this one. The ancient lore of the Gūla described the first arrival of the Clovis on Destruna. At that time, the tribes had been primitive, living in thatch huts. It was the Clovis who taught them to build, to write, to read.
It was during that time, the true wealth of the Gūla was discovered. Warlords seized the mines filled with lunar crystals. When put together, they glowed, and were a power source unlike anything else on Destruna.
And from that power source they had created weapons capable of bringing down a Dráo, and protecting their realm. But the weapons created were too potent if they fell into the wrong hands. He shuddered at the thought of the Clovis with them. Queen Mona was already a power hungry wench with immense resources; she didn’t need more at her disposal.
His nose caught a whiff of sweetness on the breeze. The potency and flavor reminded him of dragonsbane wine. Being surrounded by the foreign stench, his beast wanted to roll around in the familiar scent.
Dang, this book is hot.  Seriously.  But just understand that it needs to be for Anna and D’Vorak to work its important.  I know, normally I don’t read the really hot stuff that much anymore but Ms. Summers is fast becoming a go-to author for me when I want it hot, emotional and having a wonderful, but hard-fought HEA.  Did I mention this book is hot?  It has BDSM elements in it so be forewarned.  I enjoyed getting to know Anna and D’Vorak.
No one writes a true Alpha hero like Ms. Summers.  At least for me.  There were times that I really wanted to hit him for his heavy-handedness with Anna but at the same time, it worked for me.  Anna was no slouch in the giving department but again, Ms. Summers can have D’Vorak do something that was really sweet and it redeemed it for me.  I also liked that D’Vorak was a gargoyle-like creature.  I love that creature in paranormal and not too many authors try to tackle it in their writing.  Plus, the dragons in this one are not nice.  Did I also mention that there are witches, spells, and an alien aspect to the book, too?  This book had a lot going on but it kept my interest from the beginning page and I didn’t want it to end.
Anna has no clue what is happening when she is pulled into the portal but I liked her spunk to her situation.  She did not want to fall in love with D’Vorak at all.  This is NOT a love at first sight.  These two had a lot to work out between them, even if the sex is hot.  Anna has forgiveness in heart, willing to compromise and refuses to settle.  She won’t hand over her friends to anyone.  At times, I really thought that it wouldn’t work out between them but Ms. Summers knows just how much to torture her readers and then pulls them back in.  Did I mention that I love Ms. Summers writing?
The book is full of wonderful world-building, an exciting plot, and breathtaking pacing.  It is full of adventure, thrills and fascinating characters.  I didn’t read the first two books in the series and I was never lost.  Ms. Summers does a great job of letting the reader know what is going on.  There were still a few things that I didn’t quite feel where finished so I hope that there is another book in the series.
Again, I really, really loved this book and Ms. Summers.  You will, too, if you give it a chance.
About the Author:
Kill Shot
by Amber Malloy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   Romantic Suspense

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Invited to speak for the United Nations, International Attorney Ashe Marcille is on the fast track. However, everything changes when she finds her law partner dead. Left with no option but to abandon her hard-earned career, she goes on the run.
Walker Knight, owner of a high-tech security firm, left the spy games years ago. A former agent for J8, he had no intention of returning to that life until the agency calls in one last favor. It should have been an easy job—pick up then drop off a lawyer with no questions asked. But, best laid plans…
Attracted to the attorney from the minute he laid eyes on her, Walker sets out to solve her case. Until he can figure out who wants her dead, he’ll have to keep her close…very close.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt One:

O’Brien’s, the Midtown Manhattan pub, aired the NBA playoffs on every television in the bar. Walker Knight ordered another round of Jameson for his boys. His crew—younger than him by at least ten years—congratulated each other on a job well done.

“To the best security team this side of the Pacific.” He lifted his drink for a toast.

“Come on, boss. We thought you were going to say ‘in the world’,” a newbie joked.

“That’s a tall order. It’ll take more than one job together for that.” Walker wanted to celebrate, just not to the level of wasted. His crew had no problem staying up all night, but he needed to catch some zzzs. “Next round’s on me.”

They’d spent eighteen hours on a plane to the Middle East. In three short days the team had taken down a faction of a religious sect named Glory’s Soldiers. Pleased with their quick extermination of the zealots, WLK Security’s oil clients had provided them with a major bonus.

As he was signaling for the bartender to settle their tab, a newbie squeezed in beside him.

“What’s next?” the rookie asked.

With a total of three partners—two from his school days and one silent—they ran a private security firm. Walker led their missions and could always tell the adrenaline junkies from the dedicated worker bees.

“Give it a couple of days,” he lied. Walker honestly didn’t think he would see the guy again. The kid’s jumpy nature grated on his nerves.

The bar cheered at the Knicks’ three-point basket at the buzzer. After signing the credit receipt, he chucked deuces to his crew. Dead on his feet, Walker headed for the exit. He couldn’t wait for his head to hit the pillow.

As his phone vibrated in his pants, he fought the urge to ignore it, but habit forced him to fish it out of his pocket.

“Walker,” he answered.

“Well, if it isn’t my Knight in shining armor,” the woman cooed.

Walker stopped in his tracks. That voice was straight out of his past. A form of Neverland—not all bad, but not one he wanted to deal with.

A shoulder check from a drunk blonde got him back into gear. She winked on her way past, and he smiled in return but offered nothing more. “Thought I would never hear from you again. How did you crawl your way back from the dead, Eden Morgan?” he said.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You know when you read a new to me author and you keep thinking why haven’t I read her before?  Yep, that’s me with Ms. Malloy.  That said, there were a couple of things that kinda nagged me but it didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment of the book.  In fact, I really want to read the first book in the series and the set up for the third book is awesome.
Here a few things that nagged me:
  1.  Instalove/instalust between Ashe and Walker.  At times, I can suspend it when it comes to romantic suspense/thrillers because of the intense action and the situations that the couple is usually thrown in.  Unfortunately, for me, it didn’t work for me.
  2.  At times, I felt like I was missing pages of the book.  It was like it just stopped in places and then picked up later on with me stretching my head trying to fill in the gaps.
  3.  There is a plot thread revolving around Walker that I didn’t feel like was finished.  I kinda missed Tom and the Cape.
  4.  A couple of the J8 agents I really, really just didn’t connect with at all.  In fact, I kinda disliked them.  Not Vann or Lola.  Loved them.
Things that I absolutely LOVED:
  1.  Ashe!  She is no shrinking violet.  We don’t get her full backstory until about midway through the book but it sure does explain a lot of the beginning and her responses to what is happening to her.  In fact, her connection to someone in the book…I about fell out of my chair.  I NEVER saw that coming and it was a great way to show some real, honest conflict between Ashe and his former employer.
  2. Walker is a bad*ss.  He would do anything for Ashe.  He knew to get involved with her was a mistake considering how a relationship ended before but he kept going forward regardless.
  3. Walker and Tank taking down their owners.  You just have to read it and I loved it.  Brilliant writing and a great plot thread.  The Barbie Doll wives were hilarious, too.
  4.  There are a couple of different plot threads in the book but trust me, it will all make sense in the end.  They are all part of the bigger picture and I love how Ms. Malloy was able to weave it all together in the end.  Bravo.  I got lost a couple of times but in the end, it was so worth it.
  5.  The overall plot of the book was AWESOME.  Very relevant to the times and I won’t go into right now.  Like I said before, there are a couple of threads and it would definitely spoil the book for you.  Let’s just say that I have never read a book with that kind of plot before and it made me think about some things.
Overall, I really enjoyed the book.  Ms. Malloy’s pacing is perfect.  She knew exactly when to speed it up and then slow it down.  There are smexy times so be forewarned.  I look forward to Lola and Connor’s book next.  Should be a doozy.
