Bessie looked back to the bar again and realized that Ray was no longer in sight. She couldn’t afford to lose her job at the tavern, but she was so lonely for a man. It had been ages since a fine-looking bloke like this one, has paid any attention to her. The sea captain who was in last week scared her and she escaped his clutches by faking an illness, but next time she would not be so lucky. He was due back in port any day now and Ray had promised her to the captain.

“Have you seen any other strangers in town, besides myself?” he whispered in her ear.

She would not admit to him about the sea captain. Her life depended on it. The owner of the bar was involved in illegal activities with him and she had overheard their plans. She shook her head no while looking over her shoulder again.

Charles felt her grow tense in his embrace. Her body shook from the fear of something or someone and he had a sense on who that was. He pulled her back into his arms more and nuzzled at her neck, feeling her relax again.

“I can protect you Bessie, you need not tell me a single word. If the question I ask you is correct, stroke your hand along my arm. Do you agree?”

Bessie raised her head to stare into the stranger’s eyes, he did not seem as dangerous as the other men coming into the tavern. More of a charmer than anything. She decided to trust him, he might be able to help her escape before it was too late. Slowly she lifted her hand and let it glide down his arm.

Smiling at her he lowered his head again, pretending to kiss her. “Has there been any unusual activity in town within the last few weeks?”

Her hand caressed his bicep, shaping it to her palm.

“Have there been other strangers in the village?” he questioned her again.

Moving down his arm she wrapped her fingers around his wrist.

“Anyone by the name of Shears?”

Her fingers tightened on his wrist as her body grew tense in his arms again. She raised frightened eyes to his as she slid off his lap.

“I need to get back to work sir,” she explained as she let go of his arm.

His arm snaked out quick, grabbing her by her wrist.

“A few hours you say?”

She nodded her head at him as she picked up his empty glass. He dropped her wrist and swatted her on her backside playfully.

“Well Miss Bessie, I will wait here for you; then we can use that room of yours for more fun later,” he winked at her.

Bessie smiled at him, forgetting he frightened her with his questions. His smile held many promises she wanted to enjoy. She wandered back to the bar with the empty glass, smiling over her shoulder at him.

Charles raised his glass at her when she looked back at him. He continued to smile, looking her body up and down in appreciation. When he noticed her blush, he knew he had her convinced that he only wanted a good time. He would wait around here until he could go to her room, then he would get the answers he desired. She knew a lot more than she was letting on, but something had frightened her. Not something but someone. He was close. If he was near, then so was she.

This was an interesting book.  Interesting that it was a true historical romantic suspense novel and I honestly don’t read a lot of them.  Sure, some of the ones that I have read have some intrigue to them but this one was a spot on suspense book.  Kidnappings, threats, some violence and a twist that was truly OMG.  But dear readers, you really need to read the first book.  I didn’t and there is a story arc that is being played out that I didn’t get into at first.  I’m still a bit confused but I think that wouldn’t confuse some people.

Raina is one of the best historical heroines that I have read in a very long time.  She’s smart but hurting at the same time.  Conflicted yet so sure of what her mission is.  Dealing with Charles in the first book (again, didn’t read it) and then picking up where it left off, kinda felt off for me.  That said, once this book started moving, it just took off.  Its a fast paced book with plenty of twists to keep you into the story of Raina and Charles.  I just loved Charles, too.  Perplexed at his feelings for Raina, he really had a hard time with his feelings for her.

The secondary characters are very interesting and really help the story along, too.  The villain in the book is vile and I’m really interested to see what is going to happen next.  Yes, even though I didn’t read the first one, I would definitely read Zane’s book in a heartbeat.  There are some loose threads in the suspense plot of the book that I MUST know what is going to happen.  The romance between Raina and Charles is spot on.  I might have had some problems with the plot of the book (simply because I didn’t read the first one) but the romance is swoon-worthy.

If you are looking for a true historical romantic suspense book, look no further.  Ms. Barnes has written one that left me wanting more.

She peeked a glance up at him, catching mostly only a broad shoulder because of his height. His long arms swung at his sides and his posture stern as he stared at the romantic beach scene in front of them. They were about thirty feet from the other guests when Wes slipped his hand into hers. She stiffened on contact and her brain shut down.
Low, so only she could hear, he said, “We have to sell it, remember?”
She nodded, not trusting herself to say anything while her heart did backhand springs in her rib cage. Holy crap. She was totally holding Wes Stevenson’s hand. And she totally sounded like a teenybopper thinking that.
Be cool,

Tee. Be cool.
It was going to be tough though since her version of cool had never been anything close to his. Or anyone else’s for that matter. Standing up straighter, she closed her hand around his, taking in the feel of skin against skin. The closer they got to the already filled area, the more erratic her heartbeat became. She was going to face Juliet, her family, and friends. And they were all going to chastise Teegan for bringing Wes.
Damn. She wished she’d thought about that before this moment. She could’ve feigned sickness for the entire weekend. What was going around right now? Yellow fever?
Malaria? She’d even take a good case of salmonella. Anything to get her out of seeing the judgment in everyone’s eyes. The same judgment she saw at every other Delta Gam wedding she’d attended.
With a date, without a date…it didn’t matter. It followed Teegan anyway. The man in question didn’t seem bothered by their impending fate. He stood tall and wore a confident smile. Zero nerves radiated off him.
The Ice Box, they’d called him on the football field. Because he was always cool under pressure. Man, what she wouldn’t give to have some of that superpower right now.
He squeezed her hand, which made her look up at him. He lifted his chin, gesturing in front of them. She looked toward a receiving line that included the bride and groom.
Juliet and the man she’d left Wes for.
Excellent.
Teegan couldn’t wait to greet them both on this glorious, fantastic evening. Why, oh why, had she agreed to this? It would’ve been better not to attend at all, rather than bring Juliet’s ex to Juliet’s wedding.
Oh, God.

Her heart was beating at an unhealthy rate. She might faint.
Hey, that wasn’t a bad idea. If she fainted—The hand attached to hers tightened. Wes. She was doing this for Wes. Just think about that. This had to be a million times worse for him.
I needed this book.  Yes, needed.  Since February, our house has been neck deep in baseball and tomorrow it will officially end.  (Last day of the second baseball camp) I needed a cute, sexy, rom-com to read.  I’ve read all of Ms. Elle’s romantic suspense books and they are excellent, so I went with the knowledge that it would have some funny moments.  She didn’t disappoint at all.  In fact, there were some parts that I shouldn’t have laughed at but I did.  And that’s what I needed.
I won’t go into the plot; just read the blurb.  This is a friends to lovers story that hits all the right buttons with me.  Tee and Wes are connected by college and Tee is Wes’ sister’s best friend.  OMG!!!!  Misty and her husband were HILARIOUS!!!  The whole “dress up” scenes were just too damn funny.  Trust me.  You will laugh out loud.  So while we have the whole best friend’s brother vibe going on, you can also see that something was brewing back in college with Tee and Wes.  *swoon*
The revenge part of the plot was nicely done.  I particularly loved the game scenes; Twister is the best.  Juliet is so NOT a nice person.  I just couldn’t see why the other girls even liked her, or Wes for that matter.  I mean seriously?  She wasn’t even a mean girl.  Just a non-person that was greedy, needy and basically a class A *itch.  Now, the other girls were a hoot and they really seemed to care about Teegan even if she thought that they pitied her instead.
Wes and Tee as a couple were a dream.  Tee really gave it to him near the end of the book.  He deserved it and I think that he knew it, too.  You can’t have your cake and eat it, too and except Tee to be okay with it.  She’s a very strong woman but she wasn’t going to let him get away with that crap.  And oh my, the scene with him, Misty, Tee and the other girls afterward?  I had tears, yes, tears.
Do yourself a favor and pick this book up.  You will be laughing, swooning, cheering for Wes and Tee during the games and come away with a great friend to lovers story that I will definitely re-read and put on the keeper shelf.  Ms. Elle is a great writer and it shows with this one.  Can I admit that I miss the grannies and guns?  Just saying…

After a few sideways looks from the attendees, Dr. Paul suggested they walk to the parking garage together. They were so caught up in conversation that didn’t revolve around Chuck, the coma, or the medical world, an hour had quickly passed. Valerie leaned back onto the bumper of her Jeep and tilted her porcelain face up towards Dr. Paul. It felt as though the thick air were a magnet, drawing them inexplicably to each other in that moment. Before they knew it, the pair found themselves in the midst of a soft, sensual kiss. Pausing for a moment, they looked into each other’s eyes, unable to refrain from the tension that had been building for years. After a few passionate moments, Valerie willed herself to gently push him away. “I’m sorry. I don’t know what came over me. That can never happen again,” Valerie stuttered as she walked around the Jeep and reached for the handle. Dr. Paul stood frozen in his place, mesmerized by her every move. Without a word from the doctor or a second glance from Valerie, the blue Jeep sped out of the parking garage.
