Dark Desires

by Aja James

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Paranormal, fantasy romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Ryu Takamura is the Dark Ones’ Assassin. He has never missed his target…until now. Until her.

Ava Monroe is a talented geneticist who holds the key to the vampire race’s future…and perhaps her own as well.

Their attraction is explosive from the first. She would do anything to have him. He would sacrifice all to protect her.

But will their love triumph over seemingly impossible odds as they battle enemies new and old? Especially the demons from Ryu’s past? And deep within his heart?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
She was not what he expected.
Not that he knew what Professors or Doctors (or whatever one called someone with both PhD and MD as a suffix to their name) in molecular genetics looked like on average, if there was such a stereotype to begin with.
But he thought they might be…older.
Gray-haired with glasses and a wizened, wrinkled visage reflecting self-sacrifice (for how else would they have had the time to concentrate on their studies?) and solemnity (for what humor was there in such an analytical, methodological subject?).
For Ryu Takamura, who had been raised for the first ten years of his life in a whorehouse and abandoned thereafter at a Shinto shrine, formal education—hell—any education seemed foreign and antithetical to his own upbringing.
Perhaps this was why he always dressed and spoke with meticulous care.
To any observer, he appeared to be the immensely wealthy heir to a Japanese or Korean conglomerate, living a life of privilege and idleness with armies of servants to tend to his every need. His clothes were of the finest quality and tailored to fit his long, lean body to perfection. His wavy black hair was tousled just so, fuller on top and in the back and shaved closely on the sides to emphasize his aristocratic bone structure, all angles and points liked a laser-cut diamond.
He was so blindingly elegant, in fact, he could never have been mistaken for a real Asian heir. He represented what their alter egos might aspire to if they could ever look as resplendent as he. Rather like how K-dramas represented the ridiculously good-looking and wealthy on TV with actors who had undergone countless surgeries to mimic perfection.
If only they knew the truth. Ryu’s lips tipped at one corner in dark amusement.
Where to start?  As you know, I don’t normally review paranormal romance.  Then you throw in a bit of fantasy, too and I sure don’t review those, much less read them.  Well, this is the third book in a series that I started with book two.  This one didn’t disappoint in most ways but overall, I found something lacking.  Now, don’t get me wrong, Ava and Ryu were well round characters and I enjoyed getting to know them but I felt like the story was wrapped up too neatly.
The world building is phenomenal again in this book.  Each book stands alone but I was excited to see the other characters come back for this one to help Ryu and Ava.  As with the other book, the book starts off fast and really never stops.  This one could have read like any other vampire meets human, falls in love and then fights off the bad guys to keep the human.  Oh no…Ms. James doesn’t write that way.  She makes her characters interesting and relatable.  Even if their jobs are a bit above my pay grade.  But that’s what I really liked about them.
While we had Rya and Ava’s story, some questions were answered and others not.  I love it when an author does that in a series.  There is a definite overall story arc to the series and I can’t wait to see where it ends.  Ms. James is a master at this and I applaud her for it.  She gives you just enough and then pulls back.  Tease but that’s what makes this series so wonderful to read.  Plus, the characters aren’t like the others.  Each is different and their history is not cookie cutter.  The book kinda dragged for me in the beginning but once again, Ms. James lets go and the story and action take off.
I know that I don’t recommend paranormal or fantasy but this series has it all.  Hot guys, heroines that you want to be friends with and a storyline that will leave you breathless in the end.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Aja has been writing stories since the age of six, and novels since the age of thirteen. While she’d be the first to admit that those early efforts weren’t particularly good, she sure loved putting them down on paper!
The best part of writing, according to Aja, is that it’s completely organic, the way the stories develop. When the inspiration hits, she writes just so she herself can learn where the characters are headed because oftentimes, they take her by surprise! It is her ultimate dream to share her stories with as many readers as she possibly can.
Her other loves include art, cooking, old movies (anything with Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Robert Redford, Vivien Leigh, Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman, Clark Gable, and all the song and dance numbers because she can’t watch them and not be happy!)
She adores taking long walks with her husband and running after her two rambunctious kids. She has traveled extensively (all seven continents except Antarctica) and has a multi-cultural upbringing. She speaks two and a half languages and binge watch TV shows when the mood strikes.
Aja has a Bachelor’s of Arts in Comparative Literature and Economics and two Master’s degrees, one of which is in East Asian Studies.
Heart of a SEAL
by Dixie Lee Brown
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:  Romantic Suspense

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
They’re brothers in arms, Navy SEALS risking their lives for their country . . . and the women they love.
This is Luke Harding’s story.
Six months in a desert hellhole taught Navy SEAL Luke Harding things he never wanted to learn about life and death. Only tender memories of the beautiful brunette he met a few weeks before his deployment helped get him through the torturous days and nights. Back in the States after a perilous rescue, physically and emotionally damaged, Luke’s about to plunge into a new kind of war. In a seemingly bucolic Idaho town, Sally Duncan faces real—and unpredictable—danger.
All Sally ever wanted was a safe place to raise her nine-year-old daughter. Her identity hidden behind a façade of secrets and lies, can she trust Luke—a man she barely knows—with the truth? Even as they give in to long-denied passion, a killer with a personal vendetta is setting an ambush that will leave them praying for a miracle and fighting for the future they may not live to see.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt Three:

Screaming wasn’t really Sally’s style. The best she could do at the moment was crawl out of the reach of the enraged lunatic and hope he came to his senses.

“Go ahead. Touch her again and see what happens.” The suggestion, coming from the darkness behind Emmett’s vehicle and delivered with steel-edged composure, took her completely by surprise.

Sally swung toward the new player, forgetting Emmett for the moment. The voice was all too familiar, stirring unwelcome memories. Eyes watering from Emmett’s blow, she squinted to see the man standing in the darkness just beyond her yard.

“Luke?” Sally staggered to her feet, clenching her teeth against the sick feeling that swirled in her stomach.

It couldn’t be him. Not the man she’d fallen hard for before he deployed with his SEAL unit over a year ago. Not the man who’d refused to see her when she hurried to the hospital in Bethesda after hearing he’d been rescued from a terrorist prison. Rushing to his side because she’d thought they meant something to each other, she’d quickly learned the truth of the matter. His disregard had let her know, in no uncertain terms, that the feelings had been one-sided. That man had no reason—or right—to show up at her door.

Sally searched the shadows near the street, where the voice had originated. When she finally made out his silhouette, her breath caught in her throat.

Luke didn’t spare her a glance.

“Who the hell are you?” Emmett turned to face him.

“Does it matter?” Luke’s words contained a dangerous warning that Sally had never heard before.

As he stepped from the shadow of the SUV, his military fatigues and the duffel he carried reminded her of the homeless people who’d camped on Elk Creek last fall. A knife in a leather sheath hung at his side. His face was etched with lines of exhaustion, and he might have carried himself stiffly, but otherwise he was the same man she remembered. Light brown hair, longer and a bit more disheveled than the last time she’d seen him, always tempted her to run her fingers through it…even now.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ms. Brown, I’m so very sorry this is late.  I loved this book.  Every ounce of it.  This just reminds me of why I love romantic suspense so much.  When we meet Sally and Luke, we don’t have to worry about them getting together because this is a second chance story.  We did have to worry about it is the “who is trying to kill us”.  And of course, I NEVER saw that one coming.  I was sure I had it figured out but no.  You had to throw the curveball.
Peeps, this book is fast.  The action never stops.  Like ever.  Even with the smexy times, it moves at a fast pace so you need to pay attention and don’t start it at night.  Why?  Because you need to pay attention.  Ms. Brown writes a suspenseful romantic thriller with just a dash of humor to keep things from getting too dark.  There are some dark issues that both Luke and Sally went through to get where they are in the book and Ms. Brown does a fantastic job with that.  Even with Sally’s daughter, Jen in the mix, she even has her own little “trouble” thrown in there.  Don’t worry though, its necessary to the whole book.
Travis, Daniel, Matthew, and Garrett (must read his book), are wonderful additions to their story.  Plus, I can’t wait to read their stories.  Matt’s story is next and yes, I pre-ordered it already.  Plus, the setting of the book is wonderful.  No one sets anything in Idaho.
Folks, I can’t praise Ms. Brown enough with this book.  Strong characters, an ending that I NEVER saw coming, and a strong family unit among friends that is unbreakable.  She reminds me why I romantic suspense is my favorite genre.
EXCERPT:
Patiently Ally waited for him to continue.
“If we’re going to work together I think we need to establish some ground rules.”
“I agree.”
He got right to it. “I don’t have issues with alternative medicine per se—herbal, Ayurvedic, naturopathic, homeopathic, acupuncture, Reiki or any other type of traditional remedy, for that matter, is fine with me. I don’t care or interfere with what people believe or how they choose to treat their medical conditions. What I do have a problem with is when it directly affects my job, and more specifically, my ability to save a life.”
“And you feel like my use of medicinal clay falls into the latter category?”
“I do.”
“Please keep in mind that yesterday I was treating a family member in an emergency situation. I wasn’t on the job.”
“I understand that, which is why I’m here instead of in Dr. Boyd’s office.” He shrugged a shoulder. “Even though I do not understand why you would purposely put your cousin in danger.”
“Obviously, I don’t see it that way.”
“Obviously. You can see it any way you choose. But for the duration of time that we’ll be working together I need you to do it my way. My way is the right way.”
“Noted,” she replied calmly. “My turn.”
“What?”
Ally almost laughed at his look of utter confusion. “You said we were establishing ground rules. You gave me yours. If this works the way I think it does, then it’s my turn to outline my rules?”
Narrowing his gaze, he studied her like he was puzzling out this detail. His eyes burned into hers, and she couldn’t tell if they were green or brown. Inexplicably, the back of her neck began to tingle.
“Do you want to have a seat?” she asked, partially to stop his perusal, partially to bring him closer to her eye level. If Dr. Boyd hadn’t intimidated her, there was no reason this guy should. But it might be easier to manage if he wasn’t hovering over her.
“Fine.” Moving closer, he lowered his tall frame into the seat across from her.
Better, she thought, meeting his gaze head-on. Except now he seemed really…close.
Gathering her thoughts, she said, “When I’m out on a call and acting as the paramedic on behalf of Rankins Hospital my word is final. My way is the right way. I also have some ideas on how you can improve your efficiency. It took you too long to take off after you landed at the lake.”
He scoffed. “Are you kidding me? The only thing holding up my takeoff was you chatting with Jessie while I waited for you by the plane.”
Hands folded neatly on the desk in front of her, she went on. “I disagree. It took three minutes for you to get inside the plane and settled after I’d already boarded, and your dissension took at least another minute. Had you already been on board, we would have landed approximately five minutes sooner. I don’t think I need to remind you how vital five minutes can be in an emergency medical situation.”
Ally waited for him to respond, steeling herself for whatever came next. He didn’t look angry or upset, though. In fact, he was completely still. Too still?
*sigh*  There is so much going on with this book that I don’t know where to start.  I had to remind myself that there are other books in the series but I was never confused.  Ms. Ross lets you know what’s up with everyone so far.  Now, I said there is a lot going on in the book, I mean between Ally and Tag.  The storyline itself is a realistic portrayal of life in Alaska between the native people and the others.  Of course, I’ve never been to Alaska but I can understand the differences and how it affects the people that live there.
I would have to say that the political plot line was intriguing.  Should he really run or not?  What effect would it have on Tag in the end?  I could see the changes in him as did Ally, and I didn’t like it at all.  In the end, I didn’t see the decision that was made.  Hannah really stepped it up and let us not forget Iris.  Loved her, loved her.  She is blunt, to the point but actually what Tag and Ally needed in the end.
While there was a romance that was sweet, it was also a story of two cultures coming together and seeing if they can make it work.  I understood both of their positions when it came to medicine but I think that Tag could have been a bit more openminded about it.  Flynn, Ally’s childhood friend, and doctor understood.  In fact, he was the only one that really defended Ally in the end.  Shay, the difficult sister of Tag’s was beginning to understand it in the end, too.  I didn’t know what to think of Tag’s big family but they truly did mean well.
I would be remiss not to mention the big pink elephant in the room.  The age difference between Tag and Ally.  16 years people.  Now before you shake your fist in the air and say, NO WAY!  Yes, way.  Typically don’t like a romance where the age difference is that big but Ms. Ross writes it with some pretty hilarious moments but also some heartbreaking ones, too.  In the end, Tag and Ally just worked regardless of age or beliefs.  Too bad that Tag figured it out almost too late.
Folks, I can not press upon you to pick up a book in the Harlequin Heartwarming line.  Ms. Ross writes a true winner in the line and of course, I’m one of their biggest cheerleaders.  They are heartwarming, funny, relevant with romance abound.  Ms.  Ross delivers a winner!
