GENRE: Crime/Thriller Romantic Paranormal

BLURB:

11:18 p.m. Subject is checking into the Desert Palms Motel, accompanied by an unknown female.

Snapshot in the parking lot. Man and woman embrace. Betrayal, I see it every day, like my own reflection in the mirror staring back at me. Another case, another bottle of booze, life is no longer a mystery to me …

… Because I’m the private eye, hot on your trail; the top gun for hire. You’ll find me lurking in the shadows, always searching for a clue. I’m the bulletproof detective. I got my eye on you …

What’s a little sin under the covers, what’s a little blood between lovers? What’s a little death to be discovered, cold stiff body under the covers?

I’m digging you a desert grave, underneath the burning sun. You won’t be found by anyone. Vultures circle in the sky, and you, my dear, are the reason why.

… I was always easily influenced.

Excerpt Two:

Smith spit out another peanut shell onto his Chevy’s floorboard as his gaze stayed trained on the Desert Palms Motel’s front entrance. His fingers instinctively found the opened bag in the complete darkness and pinched another nut. He squeezed his eyes closed to ward off the simmering residual headache from the most recent blackout. The sound of the rain pelting the windshield was soothing.

“Come on. Where are you? You took the last two nights off. I can’t imagine you being on vacation.”

Headlights turning into the parking lot diverted his attention from the motel’s front door. He squinted to decipher the make and model of the vehicle through the downpour. A Bentley. He sighed and returned his focus to the motel as he fingered the brim of his newly purchased replacement fedora and then tossed it next to him in frustration.

Smith removed his revolver from his shoulder holster and checked that all six chambers were loaded for the umpteenth time. He secured the weapon and grabbed the small notebook from underneath his discarded fedora, lying on the passenger seat, where Wynn should be sitting. But she had maintained radio silence throughout the past two days since storming from Hank’s office. He shook his head in disgust for letting Wynn’s drama distract him from the job at hand.

He swiped the Chevy’s dashboard with his palm to clean off the thick layer of dust that had collected from months of neglect. He wiped his hands on his pants, leaving a graying smear across the fabric covering his thighs. He reached into his trench coat’s inner pocket and removed a silver flask. He opened the top and looked at the engraved insignia on the front. His index finger traced the shining eyeball hanging freely in the cut-out middle of a pyramid. Taking a swig from the decorated flask, he grimaced as the brown liquid hit the back of his throat.

Can I be honest with you?  Really honest?  I’m not sure how to word this review.  As you can tell but the genre listing its a mixture of things.  Plus, its based on an album.  Like if I were to write a novel about Queensryche’s Operation:  Mindcrime.  Or Pink Floyd’s The Wall.  Yep, its that type of book.  Trust me, I’ve never even heard of the album but with Mr. Paone’s prose, I did hear it.  And hear it, I did.  It’s kinda weird, suspenseful, sexy and mind blowing all at the same time.

Mr. Paone has written a book that completely surprised me.  Of course, since I didn’t have a clue going in, I just went along for the ride.  It’s dark, twisted with characters that you despise but can’t help like at the same time.  Again, it’s just weird but a good weird.  Since I read other books besides romance, I read a lot of “different” books but this one is in the top ten of the best books that are not in the true romance category.  I loved how Mr. Paone was able to pull this romance reader into his world and hold me until the very end.  I’m still thinking about this book even though I finished it a while ago.

Again, I’m sure that I’m rambling but I honestly don’t know how to put my feelings on the page about it.  Creepy, weird, different, and completely well written.  Mr. Paone knows how to use his words.  It’s atmospheric, with a paranormal twist that I never saw coming.  Does he finally get the bad guy preying on prostitutes?  You will have to read it to find out.  If you are looking for something different, read this book.  I’m glad that did.  Now I need to figure out how to write that novel featuring Operation:  Mindcrime.  Which I HIGHLY recommend.  Geoff Tate at his best.

GENRE: Crime Fiction

BLURB:

When a little girl is found brutally murdered, veteran NYPD homicide detectives Hiro Masimoto and Ryan Sullivan are determined, against all odds, to solve the case.

In the midst of the worst heat wave in New York City’s history and with personal and professional pressures mounting, the detectives pursue the mother’s ex-boyfriend and former criminal, Nick DeSantis.

But DeSantis, a two-time felon, has skipped town and the detectives struggle to collect enough hard evidence to extradite him before he slips completely out of their grasp.

With a cast of outlaw characters and more twists and turns than a coiled spring, Brooklyn Heat delivers a taut thriller of the highest caliber.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
Detective Hiro Masimoto makes his way through the gaggle of spectators, approaches the yellow police tape stretched loosely between the railings at the foot of the brownstone steps. He runs an absent hand through his cropped, jet-black hair, then bends his lanky six-foot-two-inch frame under the tape. Despite the heat, he wears an immaculately pressed dark-blue suit, crisp white shirt, and geometrically patterned blue and white tie. A gold shield hangs from his breast pocket.
“Hey, Maxi,” the uniform standing at the top of the stairs says, taking a pull on his cigarette as the detective walks up to meet him.
“Hey, Ralphie. What’s the deal?” Masimoto asks in his patient way, as if passing the time, waiting for a train.
“Don’t know really, but I think it’s murder,” Ralphie chuckles darkly, blowing smoke. When Masimoto doesn’t respond, Ralphie frowns. “I wasn’t first on the scene. McNally and Dugan were. Dugan said to wait here for the Dicks.”
“OK, well, I’m here now. Medical Examiner on the way?”
“Don’t know.”
“Right, so, what do you know?” Masimoto asks.
“It’s been three weeks without a drop of rain, and today’s gonna be another scorcher. Weatherman says hazy, hot, and humid. There’s a bit of a panic over the temperature as no one can recall it ever being this hot this early in the year. It’s been so hot for so long, the murder rate has dropped to its lowest since the city’s been keeping track. People are just too hot to bother,” Ralphie says with a wink, a nod, and a puff of his cigarette.
Review of The Gun by Daithi Kavanagh w/a rafflecopter giveaway!
by Daithi Kavanagh
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Crime Thriller

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Garda Detective Tadhg Sullivan leads a special unit that investigates politically
motivated crime. A man known only as The Deerstalker is a cancer who has infected
the Irish political system.
Sullivan teams up with journalist Helen Carty, and together they try tracking down
the mysterious killer. Carty adds to Sullivan’s problems, when he finds himself falling
in love with her. And further complicating things, he starts losing trust in his partner,
Detective Pat Carter, who appears to be on the side of the Garda Commissioner,
who Sullivan is rapidly falling out with.
Sullivan’s case is further thrown into confusion when a copycat killer, Tommy Walsh,
is shot dead by the CIA. When the CIA discovers that they’ve killed the wrong
person, the two agents involved–Simon, who has become disillusioned by his time
stationed in the Middle East, and Joey, a psychopath who confuses zealotry with
patriotism–are also in pursuit of The Deerstalker.
Sullivan finds himself in a race against time, if he is to arrest The Deerstalker before
the CIA take him out, and use his death as a pawn in a political game of chess.
Who will win out in the end?
Excerpt Two:
After parking, he walked through the forest to a clearing, where he knew he could see for miles. He crawled on his belly along a flat piece of rock, dragging the gun with him. The glow was coming off it again, and he could feel its strength. He stared out over the side of the cliff. Once again, he was in luck. He could see the squad cars and a crowd of people gathered around the bungalow a few hundred yards away.
Adrenaline pumped through his body. His heart felt like it would burst from his chest. He put the gun to his shoulder and adjusted the sight, scanning the group of people to find his target. There he was, right in the middle of the Gardaí. How predictable of a politician. The only time they stand with the people is during an election. He stared through the lens at the big red face.
review
Damn.  Just damn.  I honestly don’t think I’ve read a better book this year.  I’m sorry to all the romance books but this book has to be the best one so far.  The catch?  It’s not a romance.  Sure there are romantic elements but it’s not the story.  Mr. Kavangh wrote a taut crime thriller that I couldn’t get enough of.  And I can’t wait for Tadgh’s next book.  🙂
If you have no idea about The Troubles in Ireland, this book will give you a somewhat basic idea of that time period.  I’m Irish on my paternal grandmother’s side and Scotish-Irish on my paternal grandfather’s side.  They left Ireland before it happened but that period of history has always intrigued me.  It still does to this day.  As you can see, we were the Protestants and as an American, I can’t wrap my head around someone pushing their religion on me.  I digress…
Anyway, we find out first up who the villain is but in this book, we get to know him.  What motivates him and why he kills.  I loved the fact that this revealed in the beginning.  Most authors don’t have the guts to do that but again, Mr. Kavangh does this and it’s brilliant.  Tadgh and Helen don’t have a clue and that’s what makes the story so appealing.  Plus, they are dealing with some people within the department that we aren’t sure are on the up and up.  And then, of course, the CIA shows up.  Grrr…when are they NOT around?  😉
The characters are multi layered and I don’t think we know everything about Tadgh.  The writing is tight, well paced and just brilliant.  Plus, I love anything related to Ireland so the setting was perfect for me.  I did have certain scenes from the movie “Patriot Games” running through my mind.  One other thing, the book is told in dual POV’s.  I wish more authors would do this.  For me, it enhances the story and we truly get to know the characters.
Overall, if you are looking for an awesome crime thriller set in Ireland with some romantic elements this book is for you.   I will warn you that once you start reading, you will not stop.  Yes, it’s that AWESOME!
Deserves so much more.
Deserves so much more.
