WATCH OVER by Amy Reece
The DeLuca Family #1

Melanie Blythe has a house, a career, and a cat. She doesn’t need a man.

But she isn’t the only one who’s noticed the gorgeous cop down the street. When her faithless cat prances home from the cop’s house with a note tucked in his collar, it might be the beginning of something beautiful…or it might be Melanie’s death warrant.

Detective Finn DeLuca is stuck at home recovering from a hit-and-run accident, and has plenty of time to wonder about the woman two doors down. There’s something mysterious about the beautiful brunette, and he’s determined to get to know her.

But someone else has other plans.

As the two grow closer, someone is watching—and waiting. Sooner or later, their chance will come.

And the two lovebirds will never see it coming.

Of all the stories about the family, this one is the cutest.  CJ, the cat, is just too much in the book.  I loved, just loved the notes that passed between Finn and Mel in the beginning.  It’s how they kinda got to know each.  Plus, there is Fluff, the dog.
I really enjoyed watching their relationship blossom.  Mel has some issues to overcome like self-image, having a true relationship with a man, sexual feelings and then being overwhelmed by Finn’s family.  She’s never really lived up until she meets Finn.  Mel is the one person in the book that had the most character growth to achieve.  Ms. Reece wrote her beautifully in that sense.  You get to watch her get out of her shell and live a little.  Plus, it helps that Finn’s sister, Cara (LOVE HER, LOVE HER) is right there to help.
Finn is a dream.  He’s not as heavy-handed as Hugh but protects what’s his.  Mel is his and he won’t let anyone stand in his way.  I especially liked how we met him.  He’s had a string of bad luck but he is not one to dwell on it.  He picks himself up and works through it.  His relationship with his partner Chris is great, too.  His family is hilarious.  Loving, honest and funny but at times can be overwhelming to anyone, not just Mel.
I NEVER saw the suspense element coming.  When all is revealed, I was shocked.  I kinda had an idea but I just couldn’t figure out the “why”.  I love when an author does that to me.  Bravo, Ms. Reece.

As Chris’s feelings for him start to show, Hugh struggles to keep his distance. He’s afraid the savvy cop will break his heart, that she’ll choose her career over him—or worse yet, her deadly job will take her away forever.

OH.MY.GOSH!  This book.  It has all the feels for me.  Strong heroine, strong hero.  Great plot and a bit sexier than the rest.  In fact, I will admit that Hugh and Chris are my favorite couple so far in the series.  Sure, sure, I liked the others but there is just something about this couple that had me from the get-go.  I liked the dancing around that they did in the beginning with the does she like me/does he like me.  I know, it sounds a bit junior highish but trust me, it’s great.
These two have met previously as Chris or Chrissy as Hugh calls her, is Finn’s partner.  I liked her in the first book and LOVED her in the second.  She’s strong, stubborn and will not take Hugh’s heavy-handedness or over protectiveness in stride.  She fights for her job and also her love for Hugh.  Sometimes, I just had to giggle when it came to her getting all copish on Hugh, too.  Another thing is how she gets along with the girls in the book.  There is a true friendship with Izzy, Cara, and Mel.
Hugh is just terrific in the book.  He loves Chris to distraction and he’s oldest sibling protectiveness gets in the way of their relationship.  But that makes Hugh who he is.  Once he finally figures out that Chris needs a partner in life, not a protector its perfection.  It takes him awhile but he finally gets there.  And let’s not forget that he uses his dog, Bob in his wooing of Chris.
The suspense element in the book is great, too.  We really get to see the partnership between Finn and Chris grow.  Plus, she’s just a bad**s!
Do yourself a favor and pick up this book.  You won’t be disappointed.

What a tangled web we weave.  I loved this story.  The thread about Janey’s paternity and Izzy’s reluctance to reveal who it was is great.  Mac is a guy to die for.  Really he is.  And Izzy?  I really felt for her in the end.  Such a strong woman and raising a child on her own.  How these two reconnected is awesome!!!!  I mean, in a mall of all places.   I would have freaked out but Izzy didn’t.  Oh no, not our Izzy.
Izzy is the sister that is a mystery up until this book.  I like how Ms. Reece kept her a bit of secret until now.  Izzy is subtle in the other books, but she is so much more here.  Her dynamic with Hugh in the business is at times humorous but also strong.  They play off each other perfectly.  Ms. Reece also does a great job with letting us know how Izzy feels about being a single mother.  It’s hard.  At times, frustrating but Izzy will do anything for Janey.
Mac just cracks me up at times.  The second chance at love trope here is perfection.  Ms. Reece does a very nice job of getting them together early but uses some real-life obstacles to get in their way of true happiness.  It’s real life.  Getting to know a person again.  Finding out you’re a father and balancing a new career while wooing the woman that you love.  Ms. Reece does an excellent job of weaving it all together.
The suspense element is great in the book.  You get Finn, Chris, and Mac working together and at times, it has its problems.  Finn isn’t too thrilled with Mac being in Janey and Izzy’s life and it spills over to the job at hand.  I get that and we see Chris getting them to play nice in the end.
I would be remiss not to mention the DeLuca family has a whole.  I LOVE this family.  Every last one of them.  If I had to pick, Cara is my favorite and we don’t even have her book yet.  She’s a teacher, strong, very opinionated but I sense a vulnerability there that I hope Ms. Reece explores.  She’s been burned before in love and I don’t think she has quite gotten over it.
Don’t miss this series.  I will be the first one to pre-order the next book when it comes out.  You should, too.
The whole series. Trust me.

================================

Love, betrayal and murder in a small town….

Twelve years after her mother’s murder, Shannon Bradford fears she may have helped convict an innocent man. Even worse, her prominent family may have had something to do with it. Desperate for answers, she seeks help from the one person least likely to give it. Her best friend and childhood crush, Trace Dawson. The man she sent to prison.

Serving hard time for murder has left Trace angry and bitter. As far as he’s concerned, digging into the past won’t replace the years he’s lost or erase the hell he’s lived. Now that he’s free, Shannon Bradford tops his list of bad memories. But he never counted on falling in love.

Set in a sleepy little town during the dead of winter, this award-winning romance novel is a tale of one woman’s quest for truth and a man’s struggle to forgive.

“MEMORIES flooded my mind, of the quiet riot he was, of the secret crush I’d had on him, and the extraordinary friendship we’d shared so many years ago. As fast as those images came, others replaced them. I was thrust back to the crime scene, back to Mother’s corpse and the shirtless eighteen-year-old roaring obscenities while Sheriff Gray and a deputy dragged him away in handcuffs.”Within Temptation

Excerpt

Trace ripped the front door open, flooding the porch with light. There he stood, an unsettling combination of heaven and hell poured into a tight black T-shirt and jeans that hung below his narrow hips in a way Auntie would’ve deemed vulgar.

We stared at each other for half an eternity as Ray Charles crooned, “You Don’t Know Me” from somewhere in the house.

“Take a wrong turn?” he asked, ice dancing in his eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

His jaw worked. “Four days, two hours, and twenty-three minutes of sorry. You get my messages?”

I nodded in shame. “I just…”

“Got scared.”

My breath escaped in a misty cloud. “I should’ve called.”

“You think?” He studied me in angry silence for a time. “Lose the hood.”

“What?”

“The hood.” He nudged his chin. “Take it off.”

He was testing me. His ‘you’re ashamed of me’ look was unmistakable. So I did as he asked. I tugged it down. “Satisfied?”

Trace swung the door all the way open and his arm formed an arch. I studied the man-made entrance with caution, then ducked beneath it and went inside.

He kicked the door shut.

Unbuttoning my coat, I watched him lean against a wall, arms folded. It may have been my imagination, but he seemed to study me with the same lethal aloofness of a cat watching an unsuspecting mouse—right before the pounce.

To steady my frayed nerves, I concentrated on the beautiful living room. He was renovating. I smelled paint, and drop cloth draped the floor in the adjacent dining room, which he’d jammed with tools and supplies.

An ornate brass floor lamp stood attached to an extension cord that snaked down the hall to what I assumed was the kitchen. A cute tabletop Christmas tree, complete with tinsel, golden ornaments, and candy canes was propped on a twenty-five-inch TV. The pine floor had been polished to a high gloss. Beige paint with alabaster molding covered the walls. Stylish brass vent and outlet covers complemented the gilded vintage ceiling fan above them.

I gestured. “You’ve been busy.”

“Yeah. My shrink thought it’d be therapeutic.”

“You do good work.” I tore my eyes from his sullen face. “It’s beautiful.”

“But a far cry from the fancy digs you’re used to.”

It wasn’t said maliciously. In fact, there’d been a ring of humility in his tone that had almost bordered on apologetic.

“My tastes are simplistic,” I said. “I fell in love with a dilapidated Queen Anne Victorian, but I didn’t trust my instincts. I hesitated. Now it’s under contract.” I turned to him and sighed. “Speaking of which, I may have a job for you. The couple buying it needs a good carpenter. Can I give them your number?”

He hitched a shoulder. “Uh, yeah. Sure.”

“When do you think you’ll be finished here?”

“In a few months.” He lifted a brow. “Guess I’ll be needing a real estate agent.”

“Look no further.” I tried to smile, but it felt lame. What had happened at the club and my vanishing act screamed in his eyes. “So, do you have a place picked out or….”

“Naw.” He paused, then in a serious tone added, “I’m leaving Temptation the second my parole year is up. Sooner if I can get a transfer.”

My smile froze. He’s leaving? “Ah, th-that’s understandable. What, with everything that’s happened.”

“Exactly. There’s really nothin’ keeping me from going, is there?” He paused for a beat, tilted his head, and cocked a brow. “Cholly’s got his own life. Mama and Daddy are gone. Bev’s married, and if Cole ever gets out, I’ve got to find a way to help him—but not here. Not in this town.”

Fearing, dreading, I hesitated before asking, “Will you at least stay in West Virginia?” I cleared my suddenly dry throat. “Or will you move away?”

“What do you think?” He gave the room a fleeting glance. “Three tenants lived here over the past twelve months. When they heard about what happened, they hauled ass. So selling this shack won’t be easy. Either way, I figure I’ll check out the West Coast. Maybe Washington state.”

It felt like he’d reached across the room and punched me in the stomach.

bookreview

*faints*  *slaps face to wake up*  Romantic suspense is making a come back.  Yes, a comeback.  It seems like the past couple of years, my favorite genre has been sliding to the back of the line.  Thanks to a trilogy that Harlie dares not speak of and the trash that has followed in its wake.  But I digress.  My go to authors haven’t been writing in the category for some time and its has become harder for me to find a really good honest to goodness heart in the throat suspense book in awhile.  I’ve read some really good ones of late and they have been reviewed on the blog.  All that said, Ms. Homes has crafted a good old fashioned who dunnit without being crass, too violent or having the hero/heroine have sex in the first couple of chapters.

Ms. Holmes knows her craft and it shows.  I never did figure it out until it was revealed to me in the end.  That’s a good suspense writer.  Keeping me on the edge of seat wondering…Plus, the book is not violent for shock value.  Yes, do we get the details on the murder?  Sure, but only in bits and pieces.  And when the final reveal is done…Wow!  Again, never saw it coming but the murderer made sense.

Ms. Holmes touches on some subjects that might be triggers for some.  Child abuse is a subject that is hard to write about.  Repressed memories are another one.  Trace and Shannon have suffered by both in their lives.  It is handled with a deft hand and is a very important part of their growth as individuals and as a couple.

Trace is a dream.  Yes, he’s a con but underneath all of that is a man that never forgot the only person he ever fell in love with…Shannon.  Growing up together they relied on each other for comfort, support and overall…acceptance when others wouldn’t.  The love story in the book is a slow build and if you are looking for sex scene after sex scene, this book isn’t for you.  Why?  Because when they do finally have sex, its beautiful, emotion and perfect for the characters.  Its not rushed and when Shannon reveals to Trace her sexual history, it was breath through for both characters.

Shannon’s family is nasty.  Just nasty.  I can’t believe the crap that she had endured for all those years and when the memories finally come back…her character took off.  Grew a backbone and even with Darien (her fiance), she was a woman to be dealt with.  Yes, I liked Darien in the end.  He actually had morals and realized his mistake in the whole matter.

Trace’s family wasn’t much better but you could see the love that he had for Cole and Bev.  He wanted better for them but at the time it just wasn’t gonna happen.  I can’t wait for Cole’s book next year.  It should be a doozy and a half.  😉

I would suggest that you read Ms. Holmes DEBUT, yes debut book.  It will bring back fond memories of Linda Howard (at her best) and Sandra Brown’s earlier work.  Taunting writing, atmospheric in nature and characters that you will fall in love with from the beginning.  Did I mention that Romantic Suspense is making a comeback?  Ms. Holmes proves my point.

Is Romance it or Erotica? by Amber Lea Easton, author of Reckless Endangerment (Guest Post/Promo/Giveaway)

Yep, we are turning the reins over to Amber Lea Easton with her views on the differences between Romance and Erotica.  May be enlightening!

Thanks for having me on Harlie’s Books during my tour of ‘Reckless Endangerment’. I think I visited before when I was touring with ‘Kiss Me Slowly’, but that was over a year and two releases ago. Good to be back! For my guest post today, I thought I’d shed some light on the differences between romance and erotica novels.

With the fame of 50 Shades of Grey came a whole lot of people lumping all romance novels into the erotica category.  But that’s not a valid assessment.  When I tell people I write romantic suspense, they immediately bring up Shades.  That really annoys me—no offense to erotica, at all, but that’s not what I write.

I have many friends who write erotica so, when I say I get annoyed by being lumped in that category it’s nothing personal or even judgmental toward the genre.  It’s a matter of being stereotyped in any way that bothers me.  There are different categories of romance novels and, before you buy, you need to know the differences between the labels of sweet, sensual, steamy and erotic.

So what is the difference?  Is it the language used, the amount or intensity of sex scenes?  Number of sex partners? The difference between gratuitous sex versus natural evolution of character development? What?!?!

Well, I wanted to post a definition of erotica here, but there were too many to choose from—yeah, I was surprised, too.  So I’ll tell you what I think of as erotica and how it differs from other types of romance.  To me, erotica literature involves BDSM, or ménage, or graphic descriptions of sexual acts using slang, or gay/lesbian, or any combination of the above.

The romance genre covers all spectrums these days—from sweet romance where sex scenes are few if at all to steamy romance where the scenes are graphic but always between a man/woman to erotica where anything goes.

As a romantic suspense author who categorizes my novels as steamy rather than erotic, I use the sex scenes as a natural evolution of the story.  I make it known that I write adult content; because of that, I assume anyone reading my work isn’t shy.  My characters are en-route to falling in love—or are already there—and the sex scenes come after a whole lotta sexual tension has been built up.  I actually love writing sexual tension, keeping them from satisfaction as long as possible, so that when the big moment comes it’s VA-VOOM rather than just another scene.  I want the audience craving it as much as my characters.

Will I ever write erotica? Doubtful, but who knows?  I love a sexy scene as much as anyone and can see my characters diving into some funky stuff, but I’m not sure it will ever be enough to qualify as erotica.  Only time will tell, though. I’m usually surprised at where my characters lead me.
