It had to be a joke.
Any minute now, a van would drive up and Ashton Kutcher would slide the door open, laughing hysterically at my melodramatic performance on the front porch.
But nothing happened.
The words on the page jumbled into a toxic mess my brain refused to comprehend, much less accept.
Please consider this letter as a formal request to arrange a paternity test (DNA).
I barely remembered Chelsea Airy.
That wasn’t true—we’d gone out once, and we’d been friends for a while after. But I hadn’t heard so much as a peep from her since I’d gotten married. I’d reached out a
handful of times, but she’d quit responding and fell off the face of the earth. There hadn’t been a text, an email, a phone call, not even a Facebook message, much less a stork in the last five years.
My wife could forgive a lot, but she’d never wanted children—much less another woman’s.

Wow.  Just wow!  This is one of the best books that I have read this year.  And yes, I read a lot but I haven’t given out tons of 5 Harlie’s lately.  Lots of 4.5 but not 5’s.  This one is definitely a 5.  I’ve read Ms. Walls before (Girl Crush is hilarious and one of my top 10 this year) and with each book she just gets better and better.  She writes with such emotional depth with her characters and just when you think that you have things figured out, she throws a curveball or two at you.  There are many curveballs in this book but they are definitely worth the swing.  None of them are misses.  Just pure, OMG in the sense that they make you appreciate certain characters more later in the book than you did when they appeared earlier.
Don’t let the blurb give you the sense that there is cheating in the book.  I hate a cheater but *spoiler* there is no cheating.  They broke up for a couple of years.  Trust me, this book starts off when they are in high school and continues until they are adults.  Ms. Walls takes her time letting you get to know Cora and James (Carp) throughout the book.  They are not perfect by any means and are products of their upbringing but on the flipside, they are very grounded.  I loved how we really get to know these characters throughout the book.  Each has some growing up to do and yes, even to the last page.  *sniff*
This book does not have the angst that you would think that a YA/NA/Adult book would have.  It’s about redemption, true love, second chances, and long-buried secrets that affected many of the characters that have long-reaching consequences.  Cora and Carp are wonderful separately and together.  Yes, they broke up for a bit but it was necessary for their character growth and of course, the child to be conceived.  Chelsea is such a wonderful character.  Seriously, I just loved her and she was exactly what Carp needed during his time awhile from Cora.  He realized that he could have a friendship with a woman that wasn’t based on sex and she really helped him when it came to Cora in the long term.
I would be remiss to not talk about the secondary characters.  Neil and Hannah are the perfect friends that Cora and Carp need during the story.  They have a story, too but it doesn’t overshadow theirs.  Carp’s parents and Gwendolyn/Dottie are great, too.  They add the needed wisdom when Cora and Carp need it the most in the end.  The secrets that revolve around Chelsea, Cora, and Dottie are just…OH MY.  Never saw it coming and I really cried for Chelsea and Cora at that point.  They would have been great friends with each other.  Plus, then there is the child.  I won’t go into a lot with the child but the child isn’t stupid.  Chelsea made sure of that.  Dottie, too.  The child MAKES the story.  And yes, Cora never wanted any children but once she realizes that she can truly help him through his grief and the child through hers, she’s a goner.
I usually don’t recommend a book that runs the gammet of emotions.  Swooning, laughing, crying, cheering for characters and overall, just loving everything about a book but this is one of those rare treats that a reviewer lives for.  I hated to see the story end.  I was sad but the ending couldn’t have been more perfect.  Or Promised.  *wink*

While recovering at a remote cabin, Dr. Simon Walsh stumbles across Cara Amos. Injured and left for dead, Cara is harboring dark secrets. Yet Simon can’t help falling for his mysterious patient. As her memory returns and her injuries fade under his gentle care, he vows to help her find her missing daughter.

At The Lemonade Stand shelter, managing director Lila McDaniels is helping Cara’s estranged father, Edward Mantle, bond with his traumatized granddaughter, Joy. And his feelings extend well beyond gratitude.

Bringing this family together seems impossible… Luckily, Christmas is the season of miracles.

Yes, this is me right now.  So many emotions but these tears are both sad and good.  Good because if this is the last book in the series, it will end just perfectly.  The sad tears are because the series is ending.  If you didn’t know, the Superromance line will cease to exist late next year.  I have been privileged to read all the books in the series and many other books over the decades in this wonderful line and it just makes me sad to see it go.

The reason why this book is pure perfection is the way Ms. Quinn wrapped up all the loose threads that we didn’t know where there.  Lila has always been in the books but to FINALLY get her story is both heartbreaking, beautiful and romantic.  I loved how her relationship with Cara’s dad, Edward, carried on from the last book.  If there were two people that needed to be friends, it was these two.  Sad backstories but when they weren’t looking love, love snuck up on them.  Ms. Quinn does an excellent job of showing how an older couple act together and in the end, watching Edward finally butting in Lila’s personal business in the end.  Honestly, how Brett figures into the whole Lila/Edward relationship…SHOCKED ME!!!  Once I got over the shock, it totally made sense.  Highly emotional scenes with Lila and Brett but it is totally worth it.  I had tears…tears.  And more than satisfying.  Bravo Ms. Quinn.

Cara and Simon are dealing with much more than just emotional issues.  Cara is a secondary character in the last book but I just had a feeling that her story would be a doozy and I was right.  At the end of the last book, I knew that something wasn’t quite right and I couldn’t wait to see how the Cara/Joy/Shawn/Mary/Edward storyline would play out.  It is emotional, raw and deals with some definite domestic violence issues that will make you squirm.  I loved how in the end of the book Simon tells her that she never wanted to die.  Cara had her mother with her the whole time and just that realization had Cara believing that he was right…all along.  The scenes were Cara/Joy/Edward are finally reunited are brilliant.  While in the cabin with Simon, Cara finally comes to terms with everything that has happened over the last 12 years with her mom, her dad, Shawn and eventually Simon.

I loved Simon.  Patient and kind but also realizing that he just couldn’t let Cara do everything by herself.  He had to teach her that by herself, she is strong but with him on her side, there was nothing that she couldn’t do or deal with.  *swoon*  Plus, he had his own demons to deal with and Cara never let him down.  *sigh*  Never had two characters in the whole series deserved the happiness that they needed.

Again, I’m so very sad if this is the last book in the series.  I’ve come to love The Lemonade Stand and everything that it stands for.  Ms. Quinn has written that rare series that is relevant, relatable, emotional, swoon-worthy, at times raw but in the end of so satisfying.  *sniffs*

Ex-cop Charlotte Finch used to think there was a clear line between right and wrong. Then her fellow officers betrayed her, and the world is no longer so black and white. Especially when it’s Aiden O’Malley, one of the most dangerous men in Boston, who offers her a chance for justice. The only catch: she’ll have to pretend to be his fiancée for his plan to work.

“Let’s get one thing clear—”

One thing? I have a goddamn list.”

He bracketed her throat, putting just enough pressure there to stop her words. “Did you change your mind?”

She narrowed her eyes but didn’t try to pretend she had no idea what he was talking about. “You play your game your way. I’ll play it mine.”

Disobedient and willful to the very end. He couldn’t decide if she was trying to provoke a response or if she was just that opposed to being locked down in any way. In the end, it didn’t matter. “I should bend you over this counter and fuck you into submission.”

“Don’t think for a second it would work.” Charlie rolled her eyes. “And beyond that, we’re already going to be late, so unless you’re looking for a quickie, fucking me in any way is out of the question.”

The irrational side of him, which always seemed to come into play around her, rose to demand he throw caution to the wind and prove her wrong. He reined it in, but only barely. Every time she pushed him, intentionally or not, he slid a little closer to the edge. It was only a matter of time before he went over—and took her with him.

Aiden let go of her and stepped back. He didn’t like the confusion on her face—or the flicker of hurt that rose as he moved to the dresser across the room. For all her spikes, there was something fragile about Charlie, and he’d have to be a special kind of bastard to want to shatter her, no matter who her father was.

He opened the drawer at the bottom that had been empty until a week ago. “Take off your panties.”

“I’m sorry, what?”

He gave her a look. “You heard me.”

“I’m waiting for you to explain.”

Aiden shook his head slowly. “There aren’t two separate games—there’s only my game. Either play along or deal with the consequences.” He picked an item out of the drawer and held it up. “Here’s your first punishment.”

“I didn’t do anything wrong.” But her eyes lit with interest at the small blue vibe in his hand.

He motioned her forward, giving her plenty of time to tell him to go to hell.

But she didn’t.

Charlie moved to stand directly in front of him. He lifted her dress to the tops of her thighs, bunching the shimmering fabric. “Hold this,” he ordered.

“You are aggravating in the extreme.”

“So I’ve been told.” He pulled her panties down to her thighs. It was tempting to kiss her there, but he forced himself to stay on task. Aiden held the small vibe against her clit as he shifted the lace back into place. It took a few seconds to maneuver it to exactly where he wanted, but then he sat back on his heels. “You can let go now.”

“This is an important night, Aiden.” She shifted, a frown on her face. “We don’t have time for your sex games to distract me.”

He pulled out his phone and brought up the app he’d downloaded when he bought the sex toy. A flick of his finger and her entire body tensed. Aiden didn’t bother to hide his satisfied smile. It fell away when he touched his pocket and the little box it held. “One more thing.”

“I swear to God, I draw the line at anal plugs, so don’t even think about it.”

That surprised a laugh out of him. What surprised him even more was how good it felt. When was the last time he’d laughed freely in a way that wasn’t calculated?

Aiden couldn’t remember.

He stood and pulled out the ring box. “I’d go down on one knee, but that isn’t the kind of relationship we have.”

“No, it’s not.” She looked a little sick, but she held out her hand so he could slide the ring onto it. “Aiden, it’s beautiful.”

“It was my grandmother’s.” It had taken some shady work to figure out Charlie’s ring size after he’d first met her, so that he could get the ring resized. He hadn’t told anyone about it. Though he’d been as sure of her as he could be of a near-stranger, he hadn’t wanted to admit the lengths he’d gone through, in case things didn’t pan out.

If anything, she looked even more horrified. “I can’t wear your grandmother’s ring. It’s not right.”

“You have to. As oldest son and heir, that ring rightfully belongs to my future wife. It would be more than a little suspicious if I didn’t give it to you.”

She touched the massive diamond. It was in the same setting as when his grandfather had proposed, little rubies and garnets surrounding the diamond, to represent colors in the O’Malley crest.

It felt a whole lot like he’d just branded Charlie.

It didn’t bother him nearly as much as it should.

Praise for UNDERCOVER ATTRACTION

“Robert (Forbidden Promises) combines strong chemistry, snappy plotting, and imperfect yet appealing characters in her fifth O’Malley contemporary.”—Publishers Weekly on UNDERCOVER ATTRACTION

“Imagine the erotic sensibility of Red Shoe Diaries expertly fused with the ruthless power struggles that fueled The Sopranos and you have some idea of the flavor of Robert’s RITA–nominated O’Malleys series. In the fifth installment, she doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to the searing sensuality of the love scenes or the brutal danger propelling the plot, thus delivering exactly the kind of intense love story her readers crave.”—Booklist on UNDERCOVER ATTRACTION
