BLURB:

Allegiance, faithfulness, honor…
Loyalty goes by many names.

Emmie Landon is off-limits. She has a young son, works with my brother Jake, and lugs around enough baggage to fill an entire football stadium. But I can’t resist her long, shapely legs and thick, soft curls, begging to be wrapped around my hands.

Mark Harrington is too-everything. Too good looking, too funny, too charming, too brutally honest, too impulsive. He’s accustomed to getting his way, and never afraid to throw down the gauntlet. So what if I can’t stop thinking about his devilish blue eyes and his lip-smacking happy trail?

He needs someone to love.
She needs someone to love her.

Two seemingly incompatible lives…
Two hearts capable of total devotion.

**Despite being volume five in The New American Royals Series, Loyal Subjects may be read and enjoyed as a standalone contemporary romance.**

DIVE IN TO THE STORY!

Mark

I pulled her against me, and ran my hand up and down her back. “Emmie, I am so sorry.”

After a minute, she jerked away, patting her chest, right below her neckline. “My necklace. It’s gone.”

I remembered something snapping in my fingers when I grabbed her. “I’ll find it.” When we were kids, we spent hours tossing small objects, usually a Saint Anthony medal on a chain—don’t tell my grandmother—into the pool and then scouring the pool floor for them.

After about ten minutes of searching in the area where she’d gone down, I came up with the necklace, and dropped it in her palm.

“Thank you,” she murmured.

“I’m glad we found it. It looks like an antique.”

She nodded. “I don’t think it’s particularly valuable, but I’ve had it for a long time.”

“Tim get it for you?”

She shook her head. “No. It belonged to Mrs. Rose, my last foster mother. Before she went into the nursing home, she gave it to me. She didn’t need it anymore. Told me to hang onto it for as long as I could, but not to be afraid to sell it if I was hungry.” The lump in my throat grew with every word.

“You grew up in foster care?”

Emmie gulped a few breaths. “Uh-huh.” She nodded, white-knuckling the side of the pool. “It’s not a secret. Not really. But Teddy doesn’t know much about it. He wouldn’t understand. I don’t want to frighten him. And Jake. Jake doesn’t know. I…I shouldn’t have said anything.” She rambled nervously.

I lifted her chin, forcing her to meet my eyes. “I won’t say a word. Not a single word to anyone.” She didn’t seem convinced. “But I hope growing up in foster care isn’t something you’re ashamed of, Emmie. You shouldn’t be embarrassed about it.”

She laughed. A small, anxious laugh with an almost delirious quality about it. Any second, I expected to see fat tears roll down her cheeks. Not happy tears.

“Oh, Mark, that’s too funny.”

I reached for her arm, but she jerked it away before I could touch her.

“Maybe you were right. We don’t need to do this tonight. The swimming lesson can wait for another time.”

She swiped her mouth with the back of her hand. “I made you uncomfortable.”

“No, you didn’t.”

“You, who’s comfortable with anyone, anywhere. Imagine what it does to other people—the ones who are more socially awkward. Get in touch with that feeling, Mark. The one in the pit of your stomach. The one that made you squirm. What is it? Repulsion? Pity?”

“No. Of course not.”

“Then what is it?” she asked, so quietly her voice was nearly drowned out by the crash of waves in the distance. “Do you see, now, why I don’t talk about it?”

I chewed the corner of my bottom lip. The very last thing I wanted to do right now was give her a swim lesson. I had a feeling Emily Landon learned to breathe underwater, years ago. She could probably teach me a few things about swimming against the tide.

I wanted to know more about her life. But I’d gotten all she was giving up tonight. That was for damn sure.

Leave it alone. Leave her alone.

But I wanted more. I wanted to hold her. Comfort her. Cradle her against my chest while she told me about the little girl who’d grown up in foster care, and about the young woman who became a widow long before her time. I wanted to know everything. Everything. That’s what I wanted.

About Eva

After being a confirmed city-girl for more than thirty-five years, Eva moved to beautiful Western Massachusetts in 2014. There, she found herself living in the woods with no job, no friends (unless you count the turkey, deer, and coyote roaming the backyard), and no children underfoot, wondering what on earth she’d been thinking. But as it turned out, it was the perfect setting to take all those yarns spinning in her head and weave them into romantic tales.

When she’s not writing, trying to squeeze information out of her tight-lipped sons, or playing with the two cutest dogs you’ve ever seen, Eva’s creating chapters in her own love story.

Author Interview featuring debut author V.H. Luis & Waking to Black (Uninhibited #1) w/a rafflecopter giveaway! @VH_Luis_ #contemporaryromance

Waking to Black

by V.H. Luis

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Erotic Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

He shattered my defenses, and I was fragile to begin with…

The first time I saw Adam Black, I was between the arms of a criminal, a gun to my throat and even then, I knew I was staring at the most dangerous man in the room.

Maybe it was his confident, cerulean eyes, or the sex appeal radiating from his pores like heat waves on a scorching day, but by proximity alone he made my vision blur and my heart stammer.

The day I was nearly killed in a bank hold-up, I began to live—because of him.

Now, I’m praying for the first time in years, hoping the scars of my past, the secrets I keep, don’t interfere with my future…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
“It must be difficult; constantly running away from anything remotely intimidating.”
It’s the dare in his voice that makes me turn my head, not the statement.
“Those are the words of someone who hasn’t gotten what they want.” Even as I’m speaking I know I’m the mouse in this cat and mouse game—I should walk away, but I can’t.
“What do you know about what I want?” He climbs the last step of the porch, his broad shoulders flexed.
Refusing to take the bait, I give him my back. Reaching for the door with my right hand, I’m halted by the strong pull of my left.
Before I can focus, his lips press against mine while his body traps me between him and the door. One of his hands runs over the curve of my waist while the other tangles in the curls of my hair, pulling on the strands and angling me so that he can have free reign. I moan, loving the possessive way he grips my body, and he takes the opportunity to dip his tongue inside my mouth. His taste is divine; it’s a heady mix of wine and passion. The remnants of my resistance melt as I meld against him, moving my hands over his stomach, and resting them on his belt buckle.
He pulls back with a quick nip to my bottom lip and my eyes pop open at the sudden jolt of pleasure-filled pain.
“Say you’ll do the mural,” he commands.
“Do you always get what you want?” I counter, gazing up at him from lowered lashes.
He rubs his cheek against mine so his lips hover over my ear.
“Persistence is a virtue.”
“I thought that was patience.”
Welcome V.H. Luis! Please start off by telling us a little about yourself.
I’m a Miami girl who lives minutes from the beach. I love to write, paint, play video games and most important of all, spend time with my baby boy. Waking to Black (Uninhibited #1), is my debut book and I’ve enjoyed the experience of publishing and reaching out to readers and bloggers.
Is Waking to Black (Uninhibited #1) a single title, or part of a series?
It is the first in a planned trilogy. Fortunately for those that hate reading books in a series which is yet complete, Fading to Black (Uninhibited #1), is already written and will be released in three months.
What were your inspirations for the story?
I love billionaire romances—I’ve read so many of them throughout the years. In part my reading preferences inspired me to write this story. Though if I’m one-hundred percent honest my relationship with my father is reminiscent of the relationship Evelyn Snowe (the heroine of my series), had with her father. I wanted to shed light on a subject that I don’t often see in romance while still writing a steamy-read about self-discovery, redemption, and perseverance. I think I’ve done that and I’m proud of the accomplishment.
Please share your setting for Waking to Black (Uninhibited #1). Have you ever lived or visited there? If so, what did you like most?
Waking to Black is set in Miami, FL. I was born and raised in this city so I am very familiar with all the wonderful things Miami has to offer. I love how cosmopolitan this city is and of course it’s beautiful down here, we have gorgeous beaches and the best weather. Some might think I took the easy route and developed my story in a setting I’m familiar with and though in part that is true, Waking to Black is set in Miami because I genuinely believe it to be one of the best cities in the world—even if the people down here can get super aggressive when driving…
If you could have an author roundtable discussion with any authors, who would you invite?
Julie Garwood, because I love her historical romances and I want to BEG her for more of them. Sylvia Day, because her Crossfire Series in part inspired me to write my debut book. J.R. Ward because I want to ask her so many questions about self-publishing and writing. Kristen Ashley because I’m a fan and she seems like cool people. Maya Banks because of so many reasons already mentioned—I’m a fan. I can probably sit here all day adding names…
What is the one thing that you would tell an inspiring writer to do?
Keep reading and without-a-doubt keep writing. There will always be people who love what you write and of course there will be those who absolutely HATE it—you need to recognize that and follow Dory’s advice from Finding Nemo, just keep swimming. I think I waited as long as I did to publish because I was terrified of reading bad reviews and having others diminish what I worked so hard to create. Perhaps it’s the fact that I’m older now but the idea of being criticized doesn’t scare me as much, in fact I read those critiques learn from them and hope that perhaps with the next book I can change those people’s opinions.
Aspiring writers listen carefully… EVERY book, even the most famous ones, have negative critiques and that’s okay. An audience exists for what you write and it’s your job as a writer to find that audience. Take comfort in knowing you did it, you actually wrote a book and many people say they will do this one day, but few actually do.
Keep your head up high and keep reading and writing.
***Thank you for your time and attention.
XOXO
V.H. Luis
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
V.H. Luis is the author of the Black Series, an erotic romance trilogy that follows the love affair of Evelyn Snowe and Adam Black. Her debut book WAKING to Black, will be released in 2018, and the subsequent sequels FADING to Black, and SURRENDERING to Black, will follow shortly thereafter.
Welcome to my internet haven!
I’m a born and bred Miami Girl—and proud of it! I would wear shorts and flip-flops every day of the week if I could. Growing up in Miami, surrounded by my parent’s heritage has made me proud of my Cuban ancestry. Cafecito and a guava pastry for breakfast? Yes, please! Salsa music while I tidy the house? Of course.
If I’m not busy scribbling notes about the story pounding out of my head, I’m painting, listening to music, or spending time with the love of my life—my son. If I decide to travel, I bring the whole family (in-laws included), or at least I try to, because life is too short not to spend it with family; one of the many lessons my father taught me.
#Review of Sonnet Coupled by Roxanne D. Howard w/a rafflecopter giveaway! @RoxanneDHoward @roxanned.howard #contemporary romance
Sonnet Coupled
by Roxanne D. Howard
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   New Adult/Multicultural/Interracial/Erotic/Contemporary Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Sheltered and cosseted, Sonnet Mendoza abided by her papi’s wishes her whole life: no boys, studies first and always. Now an ER nurse in a busy Chicago hospital, medical school is so close Sonnet can taste it. Just like her father always wanted. Just like she can taste all the things she wants—like Griffith Parker, the man of her dreams and her new housemate.
Working “graves” in a large hospital as a security guard while attending the police academy during the day doesn’t leave ex-Marine Griffith Parker any personal time, but after meeting the beautiful Sonnet Mendoza, business as usual is anything but. Sassy, smart…and interested in him, too? Except, she’s made an art of keeping her distance, and she’s been clear that her plans don’t include him. But the heart wants what the heart wants. His wants Sonnet. He’ll put it on the line to win her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt Two:

Sonnet put water in the K-Carafe and listened to the hiss and gurgle of the brew as she got some organic eggs and soy milk out to scramble. She decided to make Griffith breakfast, too, even if it had to wait for him in the fridge. It was nice to have someone to look after again.

Hell, after yesterday, he deserved it. She knew she shouldn’t entertain starting something with him with medical school on the horizon, but after spending time with him, a great weight had been lifted off her shoulders, and she was ready to start fresh and tackle her workweek. She sang a little, opened the fridge, and bent to retrieve the bacon from the bottom shelf. A sharp intake of breath filled the silence from a few feet away.

From under her arm she saw Griff, half naked in black sweat bottoms with the Police Academy logo. Her eyes drifted to the hard planes of his abs, a sculpted eight pack most men would give their left nut for. His stacked chest rose and fell, and his fists clenched. Like a current in the air, she could feel him trying to keep it together.

Her gaze trailed past his ribs and flat stomach, down the sharp V of his hip flexors, to the promise of what lay beneath.

Finally, her brain kicked in and she realized her bikini thong was on display with the globes of her ass cheeks parted and raised in the air, like she was waiting for him to grab hold and ride. Her hair chose the wrong moment to slide over her shoulder and into her face, and he let out a strangled moan.

Oh, God.

She stood and yanked the hem of her shirt down. “Jeez, I’m so sorry. I didn’t think you were up. I was just about to make breakfast before I got changed.”

He gulped. Her eyes flicked to the hardened bulge of his cock, which tented against his sweats. He looked like he wanted to devour her. “I…need to use the bathroom,” he growled tightly, then marched down the hall and slammed the bathroom door.

She looked at the exposed bottom half of her panties, and rolled her eyes. “Great, Sonnet. Just great.” She turned off the stove, abandoned the breakfast food, and made her way to her bedroom. A stifled moan escaped from behind the closed bathroom door as she passed, and stopped her in her tracks.

In any other circumstance she wouldn’t give it a second thought—people moaned all the time because they were tired or relieved—but she listened. It was a certain kind of moan, one she made the first night she’d met him when she touched herself.

She heard a distinctive rhythmic thwacking of flesh upon flesh, a series of muffled pants, a grunt, and soft thud against the wall, and her pussy throbbed. She clenched her thighs together and put her palm over her mouth.

I honestly don’t want to say that this is a cute book because in some ways it is but, in other ways, the message is deeper than that.  Sure, sure it’s your typical boy meets girl.  Girl grew up sheltered with a promise to her dad that there would be no boys.  Girl is within a stone’s throw of going to medical school but then she meets the boy.  Boy makes her question everything that she grew up knowing and believing.  I know, we’ve already read the book and reviewed it.  But let me tell you why this one is so different from the pack.

Sonnet is just a bad *ss.  No, really she is.  Having no family left in her life and relying solely on talking to her grandmother’s picture, you could almost feel sorry for her but I never did.  I realized early on in the story that no matter happens she was going to medical school.  Too bad, the heart never got the message.  Poor Griffith.  Yeah, he’s the reason that her heart never got the memo.  I loved him from the start.  In fact, their dialogue at the beginning of the book cracked me up.  She gave it to him good but he never backed down.  And that’s what I loved about Griffith.  He never backed down, never gave up on Sonnet.

I realize that this book is labeled erotic and honestly, I thought it was just spicy as hell.  Sure, the “words” are used but Ms. Howard wrote those scenes with such emotion and depth that for me, it didn’t read like a true erotic romance.  Let me tell that the scenes are hot as hell but it truly shows the emotional depth of the couple has the grow towards love.  But be forewarned, their romance is a very slow burn in the beginning.  Ms. Howard takes her time with them.  Let’s them become friends first before they come together.  Kisses here and there.  Teasing moments but when they do come together, prepare yourself.  Just letting you know…

Overall, I love Sonnet and Griffith.  They had me at their first meeting until the big “black” moment and then the absolute twist in the last two chapters.  Hell, I was holding my breath as everyone else at the hospital was, too.  That was some damn good writing and I honestly read it twice.  There is definitely a message in the book that I think everyone needs to listen to.  I finally listened to my heart when I was 37 and I never looked back.
