Excerpt Two:

Maria

Bronx, NY, February 1957

As Maria glanced around she spotted the most gorgeous guy she had ever seen. He was tall and broad-shouldered, with thick brown hair pulled back in a shiny pompadour. He had olive skin and his eyes were a deep onyx. Under a letterman’s jacket he was wearing a tight-fitting sweater.

She watched him from across the room, unable to look away. When he looked up, their eyes met. She felt a shiver go down her spine; he smiled at her, flashing dimples. Maria, trying to be nonchalant, walked over to the table and poured herself a glass of fruity punch, aware of his eyes still on her. She kept her eyes down and swayed to Elvis singing

“Jailhouse Rock.” Only seconds later she felt someone step beside her.

“Hi, doll,” the dark-haired guy said to her. “Are you new? I’m Rick, by the way.” He held out his hand in a friendly gesture.

Wow, he is tall! Maria thought in awe. Giving him her most beguiling smile she said, “I’m Maria, and no, I’m not new, but this is the first school dance I’ve ever been to.”

“Boss,” Rick said enthusiastically, showing dimples again, and brilliant white teeth. “So, who are you here with? Or rather, where is he?” Rick asked, looking around.

“No boyfriend,” Maria admitted, laughing a little. “My mother would flip. Unfortunately, I am here with my little sister,” Maria said raising her voice so Corinna could hear. Corinna, who had not gone too far, looked up upon hearing her name and waved.

Will a Daddy’s Girl, raised primary by her father, leave Lynn destined to fail from a lack of female guidance?

Daddy’s Girl Excerpt © Ben Burgess Jr. 2016
Lynn stood up, stared me in the face, and shouted, “You always ruin everything! You’re the reason why my mother isn’t around for me, and now you managed to fuck things up and drive Jonna and Erica away too. I hate you!”
Everyone’s mouth opened in shock. It hurt hearing those words come from my daughter. After all the sacrifices and the work I put into giving her a decent life, “hurt” wasn’t a strong enough word to describe how I felt. In her face, I didn’t see the little girl I raised or a child that resembled me. I saw yet another woman who didn’t believe in me. I saw her mother.
Before I could blink, Rhea stood up and backhanded Lynn across the face.
Lynn wore a look of shock and fury, her nostrils flared.
“How dare you?” Rhea yelled. “Your father is far from perfect, but he’s tried, and he’s done the best he could to raise and provide for you. You’ve always pined after your mother, and you’ve never appreciated him for being here for you. That woman abandoned you. In all honesty, she didn’t want you, but your father begged her to have you and promised to take care of you alone.”
Lynn rubbed her reddened cheek and lowered her eyes. “That’s not true. I know Mom wanted me,” Lynn cried.
For years, I’d tried to make sure Lynn never viewed Vickie as a villain, but it was time for that façade to end. I stormed into my bedroom and dug the letter out of my sock drawer, the one I had told myself I’d never show to my daughter. I didn’t want her to have mommy issues, so I tried to let her have a positive image of her mother, but at the moment, I no longer gave a shit about that. I was beyond hurt, and she needed to know the truth.
Rhea was still telling Lynn of when I walked back into the living room.
“Here! This was the last thing your mother gave me.”
Lynn snatched the letter out of my hand and read it immediately.
I watched as her shame-filled eyes captured the harsh words on each line, and by the time she finished, she was in tears.
“Vickie isn’t in California. She’s right here in New York, in Garden City. She wants nothing to do with you, but if you hate me so much, and you want to see if you’d be better off with her, I can give you her address.”
Lynn shook her head. “I’m sorry, Daddy.”
I didn’t want her apology; I felt hurt and betrayed by my own flesh and blood. I threw my cell phone on the kitchen counter, then turned to leave.
“Nick, where are you going?” Jonna asked.
I didn’t answer her. I just walked out of the house, climbed in my car, and went for a long drive, in desperate need of some fresh air.

BLURB:

Mama didn’t want me. In fact, she would’ve traded my soul back for someone different if God would’ve let her, but he didn’t, so she was stuck with me.

For eighteen-year-old Lacey, life at home is a rollercoaster. She doesn’t think she’ll ever be good enough to truly deserve Mama’s love.

But when Lacey enters college and meets Walker, everything starts to change. Suddenly, Lacey is face to face with the realization that maybe what she’s always seen as normal really isn’t. Her entire life—and everything she’s ever believed about herself and her family—is abruptly hanging in midair.

Lacey is left facing two paths, and she has to make a choice. The first means walking away from everything she’s ever known. The other means never really knowing the truth.

The Truth She Knew offers an honest and powerful glimpse into mental illness, the meaning of true love, and the psychological waltz that a daughter dances as she endures her mother’s unpredictable emotions, manipulation, and abuse.

Excerpt Three:

I took my seat belt off and turned to face him. His blue eyes captivated me. I could lose myself in them forever and never care. A soft patch of hair shadowed his upper lip. My gaze lingered as I wondered what his lips would feel like against mine.

“What are you thinking?” he asked and trailed his finger lightly across my cheek.

I blushed and silently cursed my pale skin as I reached for his hand. His fingers intertwined with mine. They were strong, rough, and soft all at the same time.

“I’m not good for you, Walker.” I glanced down, embarrassed that those words had slipped out of my mouth. No way had I intended to say anything like that, but my mouth had a mind of its own. My plan had included ending the night with a thank-you and letting Walker go, but instead, it was turning into a tug-of-war between my heart and my brain.

“Lacey, I highly doubt that,” he replied and squeezed my hand.

“How would you know? We just met.” I dared to glance at him. If he knew what I meant he would kick me out of his car right then, leave, and never look back.

Walker leaned his head against his seat as he ran his free hand through his hair. His eyes settled on my face.

“If we date, you’re going to hear things about me and my ex-girlfriend. You and I share some mutual friends and enemies.”
