The year is 1952 and Ramon Rodriguez’s life as a teenager in fun-loving Havana is filled with typical activities and concerns: girls, education, religion, baseball, parties, and hanging out with friends. The country is enjoying a period of prosperity and happiness–until General Batista stages a coup that topples the government and Ramon’s life is flung into chaos.

In a few short years, the carefree fifties morph into a vicious and repressive dictatorship highlighted by corruption, organized gambling, school closures, student demonstrations, police brutality, and assassinations.

As Ramon experiences the thrills of his first romantic relationship, graduates from school, and struggles to plan for an uncertain future, he is forced to make important decisions that may be dangerous to him, his family, his friends, and his girlfriend – the beautiful Sonia — and could turn deadly.

Black Face chomped on his cigar, eyeing Pepe with deliberation. He was big and muscular and mean-looking. Pepe looked frail next to him. ‘Go home, muchacho.’ He finally said. ‘Now. Before you get in trouble.’

‘Is the president really dead?’ I asked. ‘Is it true?’

The fat policeman laughed in my face. He had rotten teeth and bad breath too. He winked at Black Face. ‘Hey, Valdez, did you hear that? This boy wants to know if the president’s dead. How do you like that?’

The black policeman laughed too, as if what Puffy Face had said was the funniest thing in the world, his burly body shaking all over. He coughed, and tears came to his eyes.

‘Is he dead?’ Pepe asked.

The two policemen laughed some more, but not so hard.

Their laughter was running out of steam. Maybe they were getting tired. I realized, suddenly, how scared I really was of them – my heart was pounding hard and my breath was coming in shallow little gasps. It was time to leave. Who cared if the president was dead or not, anyway? We could find that out later.

‘Is he dead?’ Pepe asked again.

‘You sure ask a lot of questions,’ Puffy Face replied with annoyance. ‘No, he ain’t, cabron. Bastard ran away. Scared.’

‘Cabron yourself,’ Pepe said under his breath. ‘Fat ass!’

‘What was that you said?’ Perez scowled at Pepe.

‘Nada, Señor Policia. Nothing!’ Hermes said, walking rapidly toward the other side of the street. ‘He didn’t say nothing.’

Perez watched us with his frog eyes as Joaquin and I struggled to take Pepe away. Black Face chewed on his cigar stump.

‘What these little bastards need is work,’ Perez said. ‘Trabajo.’

‘Trabajo, si.’ Valdez took the cigar out of his mouth and spat again. ‘Put them to work in the sun ten hours a day with a pick and a shovel. That’s what they need. I guarantee you they won’t be so sassy then.’

‘Si,’ Perez said. ‘That’s what they need.’ He laughed. ‘And palos. Una buena partida de palos. Beat the shit out of them with a stick.’

As if to emphasize his words, Perez hit the façade of the school building hard with the butt of his machine gun. ‘And here’s where they learn all that mierda. Right here!’ He banged the wall again. ‘From the curas and their goddamned Catholic schools.’

‘That’s the problem with Cuba, the goddamned curas,’ Valdez said. ‘Fucking priests stick their noses into everything. All they do is create trouble. Look at these kids, asking questions. No respect for authority. Wanting to know who’s the new president.’

‘Si, what the fuck do they care who’s the new president? That’s the fault of the curas,’ Perez said, adding so softly I had to strain to hear him as we rambled away, ‘School and curas. Never liked them and never will.’

Unexpectedly, Black Face screamed something at us. The jumbled words reached my ears with the force of a slapping wind as we hurried down the street. For a moment, I couldn’t comprehend what he was saying and then, finally, I did.

‘It’s Batista, cabrones. You hear me? Batista! That’s the name of your new president. And he’s black too. Like me.’

Excerpt Two:

Pg. 12

“Well look at you, Miss Trailer Queen, all wrapped up in a fur coat. Did your little brother catch it live and skin it for you, too?” Luke had gone from a baseball-playing typical young boy to a backwoods hick since we’d moved to the trailer park, but insulting him like she did made my chest tight and my face burn.

At first, I felt a spike of anger, ready to thrust from my fist into Monica’s button nose. Instead, I fluttered my lashes and held my head high. “No, Monica. Only your daddy would accomplish such a task by hand. I got this as a gift.”

Monica’s face reddened. I could almost see smoke whistling from her ears as her mind spun fast, trying to outwit me. Regardless of her standing as Landon’s golden girl, my wit sparked of amber and sapphire. Monica’s smoldered like a windblown matchstick. I shared a subtle grin of satisfaction on my way out the door to the hallway.

Had my daddy lived he would have spoiled me the same as Monica’s daddy, probably even more. I missed our old house. I missed the hidden corners and secret places I’d disappear to when I yearned for privacy. I missed the peach tree that sprawled across our front lawn. It stood so tall that in full summer, I could reach outside my bedroom window and grab a peach right from the branch.

After Mama ran out of Daddy’s insurance money, we had no choice but to leave our beautiful home and move to Woodlane Trailer Park on the other side of Landon. It was painful for everyone. Becoming the only male in the house and changing schools hurt Luke even more. Luke wanted to leave school, but I saw school as an escape. I was lucky to remain in the same high school. Even though Monica graced the hallways of Landon High, I refused to let her ruin my only happiness. School helped me in many ways. Not only because I loved to learn, but because of Mattéo Santoro.

Review of Breaking Free by Alexis Noelle

REVEAL - BF - FULL WRAP

Blurb:

Holly James is trying to move on with her life, but it’s not easy. She can’t stand to be touched by anyone, not even her own family. She is a lost broken shell of the person that she used to be. She realizes that shutting everyone out is much easier then opening up and letting someone hurt her.

Drew Walker is no prince charming. He doesn’t care about anyone but himself and has no intention of changing. He loves the life of excitement and entitlement that comes with being the lead singer of a band, and has no plans to get tied down anytime soon.

When these two meet there is an immediate chemistry. The thing that surprises Holly is that she can tolerate his touch. He makes her feel like herself once again and gives her the freedom and comfort she has been desperate to find. On the other hand he is self-centered, egotistical, and everything that she should stay away from.

What happens when the one person who can save you might also be the person who can break you?

“There was something about Drew, but I had no idea what it was. He was self-centered, cocky, and definitely not prince charming. Maybe that’s why I liked him though. Maybe I didn’t want to be saved by the handsome prince. Maybe I wanted to be corrupted by the evil king.”

**Breaking Free is for mature audiences only—strong language, and explicit sexual content are apparent.**

excerpt 2

I storm out of the bathroom and start to collect my things that are scattered all over the room. I can’t even look at the beautiful jerk who I know is staring at me. I hear him chuckle and my hands form into tight fists. The only thing that keeps me calm is imagining punching him in his smug face. Once I shove everything into my bag, I head for the door. I am only a foot away from it when Mr. Wonderful stands in front of me blocking my path.

I lift my head to meet his gaze trying to convey my hate and annoyance to him. It only lasts a minute, though, because every time I meet his gaze it’s like I’m under a spell. He puts me into a never ending fog where all I want is to be his. Damn him. I look away, trying to break the spell, and move to go around him.

He steps in front of me once more and I let out a sigh of exasperation. “What?” I try to sound strong and dominant, but I feel like I sound like a child throwing a tantrum. He laughs again and I can’t control myself; I shove his chest with both of my hands. “Ugh!” Of course, being the fortress of steel he is, I barely move him.

When it comes to Drew Walker, I have a feeling that I’m going to have to get used to losing. He’s so dominant in everything that he does that I know it will either be his way or no way. The only question is, am I ready to give up full control to him?

While I’m distracted contemplating our fate, he quickly moves and catches both of my hands, holding them behind my back with one of his. He pulls me so I’m now pushed up against him. “I like it when you’re feisty, James.” He bends his head to kiss me and I fight back the only way I can. I bite him. He inhales quickly, unprepared for my attack, but then smiles at me. “You have no idea how much shit like this turns me on.”

Before I know what’s happening, he spins me around so my butt is now pressed against him and I can feel his erection pressing against me.

“You know, usually I get tired of a girl after having sex a couple of times, but you keep me guessing. I like that.” He lowers his head and bites my neck. I yelp from the pain, but also melt from the pleasure at the same time. “Oh, and I bite back.” He releases me and I’m instantly missing the feeling of being pressed against him. “Let’s go.”

He takes my hand and starts to lead me out of the room. Before we enter the hallway, he grabs my bag out of my hand and tosses it into the room and then lets the door close.

“What the hell?”

“You run from me too much. Now at least I know you have to come back.”

bookreview

Finally! A coming of age/NA (sorry Alexis) story that gets it right.  We have two broken people but are broken in completely different ways.  But what made this story stand out from the pack was the realistic portrayals of both Drew and Holly.  Did they have problems?  You bet.  Did they want to change?  Yes.  And yes, they needed each other to be able to change.

Now, I know I’ve slammed the genre for the whole “I need you to complete me” thing but Ms. Noelle wrote Drew and Holly in such a brilliant way that they did need each other…just not to complete them.  They needed each other on a more organic level.  More emotional, put me in my place type of completion.  Drew as a control freak was at times funny and frustrating.  Holly pushed him to let go of it and between the push and pull, he finally got it.  Well sorta.

Holly’s story was more physical than anything.  I really understood the whole no touch thing.  It not only puts a physical distance but an emotional distance, too.  I couldn’t even imagine what she went through being around people.  Her brother tried to help and for that I commend him.

The one secondary character that stood out was Drew’s mom.  Typically in a book like this, the parents are an afterthought but not in this one.  She took the time to talk to both Holly and Drew to figure things out for themselves and the relationship.  *sniff*

As you can tell, I don’t give too much away but I will say this…I don’t read books about the bad boy lead singer.  I lived that lifestyle in my 20’s and I’m a survivor.  But this book is more about their relationship to each other and the band is almost none existent.

This is my first book by Ms. Noelle and it won’t be my last.  Her dialogue and easy going writing style are a joy to read.  I just wished that every coming of age/NA writer would read this book and see how it is done…the right way.
