This heartwarming story is about eight-year-old Jimmy Longwood, who has fallen in love with a Golden Retriever puppy. When his parents explain that their condo does not allow pets, Jimmy is heartbroken. While skiing in Aspen the entire family is killed in an avalanche. Jimmy goes to heaven and meets an angel who decides to send Jimmy back to earth as the very Golden Retriever he’d wanted for his own and to learn the one lesson all human beings must learn…unconditional love.

EXCERPT

The day after Christmas Jimmy was roused early, taken out the front door to potty in the bushes and then given breakfast, all before daylight.

What’s up with these people? Don’t they sleep in? What’s the rush?

“Here you go, Beau. Yum. Doesn’t this smell good?” Robin asked placing a dish of canned dog food in front of him.

Jimmy sniffed the food and jumped back.

They don’t expect me to eat this stuff do they? How about a rasher of that bacon? Or maybe a smidgeon of that hot cinnamon bun?

Jimmy quickly skitted over to the kitchen table where the family was sitting down to breakfast. He licked his mouth.

“Look, Mommy! I think Beau wants some bacon.”

“Oh, Robin, the breeder said not to give a puppy table scraps. It’s bad for them. It could make him throw up.”

Throw up? Throw up? Is she kidding? That barf material in the bowl will make me throw up!

Robin sat down at the table holding his puppy in his lap. “But I can tell he doesn’t like that food. He wouldn’t even sniff it and he should be hungry by now. After all he didn’t eat a bite yesterday.”

Daphne came down the stairs with her rolling suitcase and entered the kitchen. It was obvious to Jimmy that she was going back to New York and very soon. Just thinking about New York Reminded Jimmy of his parents. As his mother’s face flashed across his puppy mind, he felt a pang in his heart. I miss you, Mom.

“He was just getting used to his surroundings, Robin,” Daphne said pouring a cup of coffee and sitting at the table.

Hal nodded. “I agree with you though, Robin. Beau should be hungry by now. You can give him a half a piece of bacon. If he vomits, you clean it up.”

“Hal! I just told Robin not to feed him.”

“Becky, this way they’ll both learn a valuable lesson.”

Robin broke a piece of bacon in half. As hungry as he was, Jimmy remembered his mother, Melanie, telling him that table manners were a most important asset for a child. I need to play this cool. Jimmy sniffed the bacon first.

“What’s he doing? Seeing if it’s poisoned?” Hal laughed.

Jimmy gently took the bacon and chewed it.

“Manners?” Robin’s mother gasped. “Why, I can’t believe I’m seeing what I’m seeing.”

Daphne put her coffee cup down. “He’s a real New Yorker. Through and through,” she smiled smugly.

“Now put him down on the floor, Robin and see if he keeps it down,” Robin’s father said.

“Okay.” Robin gently placed Jimmy on the floor.

Wow! That was great. I bet I can con them out of some sweet roll, too.

Jimmy sat on his back paws quietly huffing, never taking his eyes from the food on the table. Yet never backing away either.

As they ate, all eyes were on Beau.

“See, Mom, he’s not sick at all.”

“I understand, Robin, but you need your nourishment, too. We have a big day today.”

Suddenly, Robin’s shoulders slumped. He lost interest in eating and in watching Beau’s performance.

“I don’t want any more chemotherapy,” Robin said lowly.

“But, Robin. It will save your life. You have to go,” Hal said.

Chemotherapy? Oh, so that’s why he’s bald. Oh, Robin, I was afraid you were that sick. I thought…well, I don’t know what I thought.

Instantly, Jimmy scooted over to Robin’s chair and put his paws on the top of the chair. He whined until Robin picked him up and put him in his lap. Jimmy licked Robin’s hand, hoping the gesture would give him comfort.

“Did you see that, Mommy? It was as if Beau understood what we were saying.”

“It’s not the words he understands, Robin. It’s our voices. All our voices become concerned and sad when we talk about the cancer.”

Robin petted Beau.

Jimmy shook his head. I understood the words, Robin! I’m not like other dogs. I’m a kid caught in a puppy’s suit, that’s all. I’m here because they wouldn’t let me die yet.

“Look, he’s saying ‘no’,” Robin said excitedly. “I really think he understands me.”

Jimmy leapt up and licked Robin’s face.

“You see that! He does understand words.”

“Robin, there’s no such thing as a dog understanding human language other than a few command words.”

Daphne held up her finger. “That’s not exactly true, Becky. Mr. Lenza, the man who sold me Beau, said that Goldens understand 750 words nearly as much as a German Shepherd who only know twenty more.”

“Yes,” Hal sighed, “ well, that may be true. But that doesn’t mean they understand them all strung together in sentences and paragraphs.”

“Well, Beau does. He’s just smarter than the average Golden is all.” Robin picked him up and held him close so that he could peer into the puppy’s eyes.

“Hal, I saw on the Pet Psychic program on the Animal Channel

that…” Daphne began.

Hal held up his hand. “Please, Daphne, I don’t need any of your metaphysical mumbo jumbo. Not today.”

“Sorry. It’s Christmas. I promised Becky I’d spare you.”

“Thanks.”

Robin looked at Beau. “I can see it in his soul, Daddy. Beau is special.” He hugged his pet. “You’ll see.”

We all have that go-to author that no matter what they write it will be good.  Ms. Lanigan is that writer for me.  I choose this book because it had no romance in it and I was intrigued.  Plus, it featured a dog and child.  I’m a sucker for both.  What really caught me by surprise was how much I needed this book right now.

I read this book over the Thanksgiving holiday and it gave me a perspective that I needed and shared with my son.  She reminded me that unconditional love is given, not earned.  And not just from our pets either.  We tend to just think we can not have unconditional love with our family or friends; that it is just reserved for our pets.  Ms. Lanigan proves that you can.  Can we not like something that they have done?  Sure.  But to unlove someone?  I don’t think that’s possible.

Beau/Jimmy is a trip.  He provides us with the humor, insight and perspective throughout the book.  His parents are the typical overworked and don’t have a lot of time to spare for Jimmy and it showed.  Jimmy/Beau’s angel is good, too.  He provides Jimmy the guiding hand that is needed.

Overall, I loved this book.  I think everyone should read it and discuss it with their family, friends, church group, etc.  Ms. Lanigan could re-write the phone book and I would read it.  Seriously.  She is that good.

Excerpt:

Some stupid part of him wanted her to say she remembered every single thing about that summer. That she wanted it back. Wanted it all . . . wanted him. But he knew that could never be. He wasn’t the kind of man that women loved like that. He was not worthy; he was infinitely flawed—had known it since his dad left him, and most especially when Darby had first been thrown into his stratosphere as the ultimate tease. Mallory only served as an exclamation point. It was Darby. Had always been Darby.
Looking at her now, he knew it.
Suddenly, she dropped her head as something in her seemed to break. “Why, Tristan?”
“Why, what?” He placed the teabag on the counter.
She snapped her head up, her green eyes shimmering behind her glasses. “Why didn’t you write? Why did you just up and leave me that summer without a word? I mean, I know it was a long time ago and it shouldn’t matter now, but I just—”
He cupped her face and brought his lips to hers, shushing her words. He’d been waiting to do this since he first laid eyes on her in the Red Cross building .. . hell, maybe since he left her ten years ago.
She froze, her body rigid and tight as emotion thrummed between them. Then, as if a dam burst, she clutched at his shirt and yanked him closer as a mewling moan ripped from her throat and she allowed his tongue to slide in and twirl with hers. He tilted his head and deepened the kiss as far as he could, allowing every ounce of her to intoxicate him. He traced his fingertips down her throat, feeling the restless pounding of her pulse.
Ten years might as well have been ten seconds as it all came crashing down on them. He pressed her back against the countertop, fitting their pelvises together snugly, drawing a low groan from her as her nails raked down his back.
He sucked her tongue into his mouth, nibbled her lower lip. He’d eat her alive if he could. She was everything he needed to live in this moment. And she seemed to consume him in kind as her fingers moved greedily through his hair, holding him closer still.
A pop and a hiss from the coffeepot broke through the moment and she startled, drawing back to rest her head against his chest. “Tristan . . .”
He gripped her hips and held her close. “Darby. I did write. Even after your daddy told me not to. But you didn’t answer.”
She didn’t move for a moment and he wondered if she’d heard him. But she eventually peered up. “You wrote to me?”
He tapped his forehead against hers. “Yes. God. Like every day in the beginning. And I called too, but you were never home. I eventually gave up when you didn’t call or write back.” He pressed a kiss to her damp lips because he couldn’t help himself. “I told you I was crazy about you.”
She rested her cheek back to his chest. He didn’t say anything, not sure what else to say. He’d been a teenage kid. Sure, he’d promised her the moon, and sure, he’d been head over heels for her, but what did she expect? She hadn’t acknowledged one of his letters or calls. Life went on and heartbreak was a two-way street. He’d just sucked his up and bottled it away.
She rubbed her face up and down across his T-shirt as if inhaling his scent. “What did you mean about my daddy telling you not to write?”
“Really?”
“Yeah.”
She drew back and met his eyes, her arms still linked around his waist.
He sighed. He hated to burst her bubble, he remembered how she worshipped her old man. He’d heard when he rolled into town that he’d died last year, and now Darby was running the company. Somehow, it felt wrong to talk smack about the dearly departed. But, the truth was the truth. “No big deal, Darby. After he found us together that night in your room, he pulled me aside and told me I was obviously not the kind of boy who was any good for his little girl, and if I knew what was good for me . . . well, he basically let me know that I was never to communicate with you again.”
She remained motionless, processing this. “He did?”
“Yeah.”
Her hand flew to her lips. “Oh, God.” Tears filled her eyes. “And all this time I was crushed. I thought . . . I blamed you. Thought you walked away and forgot me.”
He yanked her closer and pressed a kiss to the crown of her head. “I never forgot you, Darby. Not for one second.”

Dream Cast, Guest Blog, Promo, Top Five Lists

Dream Cast for The Frozen Star by Jessie Lane w/a $25 GC giveaway!

We are really excited to share with you the second book in Jessie Lane’s YA/NA Paranormal Romance series, THE FROZEN STAR! Available now! And we’re ecstatic to have Jessie Lane join us today! if you haven’t started this incredible series yet the first book, THE BURNING STAR, is available for just 99Cents for a limited time only!

The Frozen Star’s Dream Cast

Hi everyone! Crystal here from the Jessie Lane duo and today I’ve stopped by Harlie’s Books to talk about the dream cast I have for the Star Series characters in both The Burning Star and its sequel The Frozen Star. The characters (and the story) for The Burning Star came to me in a rush. There was no slow buildup of plotline or development. Nope. It was like BAM! Here we are, and you will tell our story. Melissa, my sister-in-law and co-author for this series, continued to tell each of the characters stories beautifully in The Frozen Star. So, without further ado, I’d like to introduce you to some of the characters as we see them.

For Kay I was inspired a bit by my youngest daughter. Red curly hair and blue eyes that look wise beyond her years. Freckles on her face and creamy alabaster skin. So, to find someone who I felt might look like a grown up version of my little girl wasn’t the easiest thing to do, but I think I came close. Sophie Turner plays Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones, but if you gave her some wild curls to that gorgeous red hair on her head, then she would definitely be my pick for Kay. Delicate, gorgeous features, but all the inner strength and spark of a redhead.Harlie's Books Dream Cast Kay (Sophie Turner) edited

Harlie's Books Dream Cast Ryan (alexander ludwig)Ryan’s dream cast was a very easy pick for me. Hands down Alexander Ludwig. Have you ladies seen that young man? Soooo handsome! Whoa… that sounded almost cougar like, but it’s the truth. Beautiful blue eyes, blond hair, tall and flat out handsome. Imagine him the cocky swagger of a guy who’s used to getting anything and everything he wants and there you have the Prince of the Fae Summer Court. Can I just say that I love that the cocky guy gets thrown for a loop by the shy, awkward young woman that Kay is? They’re an example of that “opposites attract” theory.

Harlie's Books Dream Cast Nick (Colton Haynes) edited

Nick was probably the hardest character for me to dream cast because no one seemed to come close to how I see him in my head. Just when I was getting frustrated and desperate… Colton Haynes happened. Granted, in real life the guy is twenty-five and his hair isn’t the silky black locks that my character wears, but imagine him as an alpha, confident werewolf and BAM – Nick is born in the flesh.

Harlie's Books Dream Cast Kira (Emilia Clarke) edited

When dream casting Kira, Emilia Clarke who plays Daenerys on Game of Thrones came to mind. Graceful beauty with a core of steel. In all honesty, she’s so broken that she’s willing to sacrifice everything for peace, including death. There’s someone who can pull her back from the edge, but there’s no way for her to whether he wants to honestly care for her as he claims, or use her as everyone else has so far.

Harlie's Books Dream Cast Kane (legolas - orlando bloom) 2bPrince Kane, son of Queen Mab of the Fae Winter Court is hundreds of years old. He’s seen many things so far in his lifetime, but nothing intrigues him as much as one young almost eighteen year old Kira does. Some might judge him for the age difference between them, but Kira’s physical age doesn’t match up the age of soul. When writing Kane I saw him quite clearly as Orlando Bloom in his role as Legolas from Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit. Long blonde hair, ethereal eyes and a toned physique of a trained warrior.

That’s all for this dream cast ladies! I hope you enjoyed it. Tell me, if you’ve read The Burning Star or The Frozen Star, do my picks match how you envisioned the characters? And if you haven’t read The Star Series yet, maybe you’ll tell me what you think of my picks anyways? A huge thank you to Harlie’s Books for letting me stop by today! I hope you all will check out Jessie Lane’s latest release, The Frozen Star, from our YA/NA Paranormal Romance & Fantasy series! Happy Reading!

The Frozen Star
Book #2 in the Star series
by Jessie Lane
Release Day: May 29, 2014
Blurb:

The journey continues:
Kay had discovered secrets, lies, shocking truths, and even love in a strange new world hidden from humans. Everything she thought she knew was turned upside down when she found out three things:

– She wasn’t human.
– She has a power she can’t control.
– And there was a possibility that she had found a way to cure the cancer that was rapidly killing her with that very same power.

Then, just when she was on the precipice of gaining everything she wanted and saving her own life, tragedy struck. Will she be able to fight her way back to Ryan and save herself in the process?

Kira had lived a terrifying and confusing life of servitude and abuse under Lord Donovan and his son, Cole. It was an existence that had stripped away her emotions, and eventually, her reason to keep fighting. Just when she thought freedom was within reach, Lord Donovan struck again, ruining her plans and almost killing her in the process. When she awoke from her injuries, it was to stunning revelations that would change her life forever. Changes that she was not entirely sure she wanted to embrace.

Persistent individuals such as Prince Kane refuse to let her walk away, though. Will she embrace all of the sudden fortune in her life? Or will she walk away from those who need her most, forsaking their acceptance and love?
