Annie’s Recipe

by Lisa Jones Baker

GENRE: Inspirational Romance (Amish)

BLURB:

Annie Mast and Levi Miller were childhood best friends until his father was shunned. Now, 10 years later, Levi returns to Arthur, Il, and he and Annie discover their bond is as strong as ever. Soon they begin imagining a future together, but that’s unlikely to happen. Levi is part of the English world, and Annie is Amish. But together, with love on their side, they may just find their way to an answered prayer.

EXCERPT THREE:

The small brown freckle under Annie’s right eye that he’d teased her about as a kid had developed into something of a beauty mark. It belonged there. To Levi’s dismay, his pulse picked up speed. He wanted more time with her. She was of Rumspringa age, so she could do non-Amish things. But that would only be for a couple of years, not forever.

Behind them, Aunt Abigail followed in a separate buggy with Aidan and Elijah. As Levi glanced back at Jake, the kid responded with a big grin. To Levi’s surprise, an unexpected appreciation for the ambience in the buggy, often referred to as the fiberglass box, welled in his chest.  He sat back as the horses stepped it up.

Automatically, Levi looked down. There wasn’t a trace of dirt on the beautiful navy velvet cushion that softened the hard bench. He remembered when his mother had used a lint brush to clean their buggy. On the sides were two small viewing windows and one in the back.

A blue homemade quilt was rolled up and slightly draped over the backseat. He’d forgotten what it was like being in a means of transportation with no seat belts or radio. Levi missed the music. He was used to driving his dad’s truck and had traversed country roads long before he’d gotten his license a few years before.

As they traveled, Levi glanced back to smile at little Jake. The response was a large toothless grin and eyes wide with excitement. Levi knew the child was dying to spend time with him.

Levi had nearly decided not to come today. Even though there had been no mention of the shunning, everyone knew it had happened. He had never discussed it with anyone. He and Annie had shared everything when they were young. And despite their unbreakable bond, she was still Amish.

I’ve got to stop thinking about her.

Shocked, aren’t you?  Amish Romance?  Harlie, what has happened to you?  Well, I’ll tell you something.  I like my Amish Romance, Christian Romance, Inspirational Romance.  This might shock you even more…I grew up in the church.  I have a cousin that is a preacher, too.  We still go to church.  And yes, I still read a broad selection of romance.  I don’t judge.  I wasn’t brought up that way.  We are all God’s children.  Anyway…

What makes this book so special?  The characters Levi and Annie.  Levi, being Amish but then having to leave.  Raised an Englischer afterward, he shows up at a wedding that Annie is attending.  It’s like the years melted away for these two.  You could feel the love right away with them but with one foot in the Amish and the other in the ways of the English, Levi has it rough.  Ms. Baker knows her Amish.  She understands their ways and also how it would feel to be in love with someone that was born Amish but raised somewhere else.  What else is interesting is that the characters are young but Annie is due for her rumspringa and Levi knew this.

Annie is breath of fresh air.  Young but always knowing that Levi was her one and only in some ways cracked my heart.  I loved reading her journal entries.  Brought depth to her character and let me see things that she could do or say to her family.  She is truly conflicted when it came to Levi.  However, I didn’t like how her mother didn’t trust her with Levi.  And all just because he was now English.  If I had one thing to say about the Amish…that belief has always bothered me.

This book is about love, friendship, and faith.  Not just in religion but also in yourself.  This a beautifully written sweet romance by Ms. Baker.  I know that most of yall won’t read the book but you really need to give it a chance.  There are some twists in their story that I didn’t see coming but with 10 years between them, Annie will finally get the answers she needs but what will she do once she gets them?  Read the book and find out.

Rachel’s Dream

by Lisa Jones Baker

GENRE: Inspirational Romance  (Amish)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Rachel Kauffman and Jarred Zimmerman seem to have nothing in common.  She’s the outgoing youngest of a large, close-knit Amish clan, while Jarred is a young veterinarian who trusts the animals he heals far more than he trusts people.  However, when Rachel’s horse falls ill, Jarred’s struggles to save him show Rachel he’s a man who cares deeply.  And the respect he feels for her gentle warmhearted ways soon becomes an irresistible bond. When Rachel tries to help Jarred reunite with his parents, it’s an unexpected blessing..with one complication.  If he takes this chance to put his past to rest, it could separate him and Rachel for good.  Now, with prayer, love…and her hope chest’s small miracles, Jarred and Rachel must find the courage to reconcile their wishes into a joyous life together.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt Two:

That sudden acknowledgment hit her with such a strong emotional ferocity, she wasn’t sure what to say.  I will miss him.  I’ve grown accustomed to his soft, kind voice.  And I feel such a bond with Jarred, like I’ve never had with anyone.  What will I do without him?

As if sensing her thoughts, Jarred stepped closer.  “Rachel, thanks for lending me your ear.  There can never be a happy ending for what happened.  But I want you to know something.  Even when Cinnamon’s well, I want to keep in touch.”

His statement prompted a sudden sigh of relief.  “Of course.”

As Jarred stepped out of the barn, Rachel yearned for him to stay.  To tell him everything she was feeling.  So many emotions flitted inside her heart-frustration, compassion, gratefulness, sadness, and others she didn’t recognize-as he stepped into his truck and started the engine.

He wanted to keep in touch.  The words came as a relief because she never wanted to be without him.

“I’ll be back after I’ve talked to Hiram,” Josiah said as he slipped into his coat. “I’m hoping the cold air will keep my temper under control.”

“One of these days Hiram’s gonna be put in his place, because I can’t think the Lord’s gonna tolerate his shenanigans forever,” Miriam predicted in a faraway voice. “But it’s not for us to know when that judgment’ll come, or how. We need to keep mindin’ our own business, doin’ gut for the folks who need it. I’ll be prayin’ for ya, Josiah.”

Listen closely. Miriam is one of the wisest people you know.

He stepped outside, lifting his face to the weak sunshine that was filtered by gray clouds. It looked like snow. The damp breeze pierced his coat and made him shiver. But thoughts of little Isaiah Daniel—Isaiah Daniel Witmer, he would soon be—gave Josiah the fortitude to tap the shunned bishop’s number into his phone. As it rang, he paced in the Hooleys’ plowed lane.

“Well, well, to what do I owe this honor?” Hiram’s voice slithered through the phone as slick and seamless as a serpent. “Calling to apologize for standing me up, Witmer? Saying you’re on your way to Higher Ground to run my supper club?”

Josiah nipped his lip against a retort that would get him into trouble. “No, but I’m going to report your invasion of our privacy to Sheriff—”

“Like I should be concerned about Clyde Banks,” Knepp cut in with a laugh. “He’s in my pocket, kid. I pay him to arrest me now and again to make you people think he’s doing his job. But he works for the highest bidder, believe me.”

Josiah’s eyebrows rose. Nora Hooley had told him that when Hiram had made a deal with the Realtor who’d hit the Knepp twins’ sleigh, he’d gotten the land for Higher Ground. Josiah didn’t want to believe that the local law officers had succumbed to his bribery—

“Your life would go a lot smoother if you’d honor your agreement with me, Witmer,” Knepp continued. “You’d have a nice home in Higher Ground for that pretty young woman and your new baby—and your sister,” he added with a suggestive rise in his voice. “And if you come to work for me, I’ll leave Miriam alone, too. And two little babies will stay safe with their mothers.”

Josiah sucked in his breath. Surely Knepp wouldn’t try to kidnap his son and the Hooley child. Would he?

“But it’s up to you, kid. How’s it feel to have so many peoples’ lives riding on your decision?” Hiram asked in a no-nonsense tone. “Make me happy, and everyone’s world will keep turning. And if you continue to defy me . . .”
