A man of his word

Dr. Bloom Freelander thought it was safe to breathe again when Detective Sam Larson put her abusive ex away for good. She’s been moving on, running a private practice and providing psychiatry services to The Lemonade Stand women’s shelter. But now that her ex is a free man, she’s in danger once again.

Forced into protective custody, Bloom can’t help but fall for her protector. But she has every reason to doubt the handsome detective’s word. Sam broke his promise to her once. Who says he won’t break it again—along with her heart this time?

review

What can I say?  I love Ms. Quinn’s books.  In particular this series.  As I have said before, she is tackling domestic abusive in all of its forms.  This story takes place when a woman is drugged and brainwashed from her professor then husband.  It just made me sick to read what had happened to Bloom.

Bloom was a child genius and never really knew about unconditional love.  Sure her parents were there but once they knew that she was special, they soon shipped her off and never really thought about the effects that it would have her.  Then in steps in her douche of a husband/professor.  Grrr….You just need to read the story to see how Bloom grows from brainwashed to standing on your own two feet.  It is definitely eye opening.

Stepping up to the plate is the cop that promised Bloom that she would never have to face her ex again.  Wow…I loved Sam.  I would have to say that he is my favorite hero of Ms. Quinn’s.  He’s quiet, strong but oh so confused when it comes to women.  Just take his relationship with Chantel.  Oh yes, she is a strong secondary character in this story.  I missed her and we get to see Julie and Colin again, too.  🙂

I don’t want to spoil anything when it comes to this book but don’t think that this your typical survival/rescuer story.  There is so much more depth to Bloom and Sam.  There path to romance is bumpy but cute, too.  They are tackling some rough terrain and it will take them both to realize what is truly important.

Again, this is not my first book from Ms. Quinn in this series.  You get to go back the Lemonade Stand and see how some characters are doing and I liked that.  I also liked that while there is a romance in the book, it wasn’t the main focus.  Ms. Quinn writes about a subject that needs to be discussed.  She handles it very well.

  1. Awesome review and sounds like an awesome book. I’m girding my loins to see if I can read about any kind of domestic abuse. It tends to make me so sick to read or see it. I’m reading a memoir of Thomas Jefferson’s oldest daughter, Patsy or Martha, and her husband of thirty something years is occasionally abusive and back then, the women blamed themselves. Makes me want to just scream out: “No!”

  2. What a lovely review! I agree that it’s great to be able to check in with characters in other installments in the miniseries. Congrats on book 75, Tara!
