Excerpt 1

“Well, you need to remember everything you’ve been told about the neutral area between strongholds. The Outlands of Temple are cursed. Yes, it’s a large city and thrumming with people, but it’s also a supernatural focal point. A vortex of some sort that attracts people. Normal and supernatural alike.”

I gulped. “So it rains here all the time. Why would anyone want to stay here?”

Ephrem rubbed his face, scratching his chin.

“Look, I don’t know how much they’ve told you, but like I said, it attracts people. It attracts all sorts of unsavory people too. That’s why it’s dangerous to go traipsing around this place at night. Actually, it’s not safe at any time. No one leaves willingly, either. This place is like… I don’t know… like the strongest magnet in the world. It draws you in, latches onto you and never lets go. People are warned to never come here. Only those of superior supernatural powers are ever able to break the hold it has over them.

I stared at him in horror. “What? Are you saying I’m stuck here?”

He frowned, letting his eyes drop down to his coffee as he added sugar and cream to it. Stirring furiously, he took a moment before answering me.

“Technically, yes.”

review

Okay, is everyone following the reviews that I’ve posted lately?  I know, I’m reading shifter books.  Weird, huh?  Normally I don’t like shifter books but the shifter books that I have been reading are really, really good.  Since I read two books for this review, I will do just one review of both books since they have the same characters.  🙂

What really stood out for me in this series is the world building.  Yes, there is much to learn but its interesting.  We have our hero, Ephrem is from one pack (MarkTier) and heroine, Lily is from another pack, ArcKnight.  They were betrothed as children and then the two packs went their separate ways.  Smack dab in the middle is the city of Temple which is neutral ground.  Meeting each other again is a kick.  Ephrem knows who she is and what she is but Lily…poor Lily thinks he is nothing but a guard.  Little does she know that is a Prince, like she is Princess.  Oh…I’ve said too much already.

Then we meet Lily’s sister, Queen Raphaela and her king, Gil.  Lordy, I can’t stand Gil.  There, I’ve said it.  But when Raphaela meets Alec the sparks fly.  What’s intriguing about the Queen and King is that they are an integral part of Lily and Ephrem’s story and are not just window dressing.  And what’s even better is that the chapters are told from a different characters POV.  I love that when an author does that.  I’m one of those readers that likes to know what all the characters are saying and doing.

The intrigue, mystery and action will pull you into the story and not let go.  Sure there is romance but I will admit that it’s the mystery and action that keep me in the story.  Don’t get me wrong, the romance is sweet and I can’t wait for them to get their HEA but for me, I want to figure out the mystery.  There is so much going on but it’s not muddling at all.  It’s a different kind of paranormal, almost like an urban fantasy (which I don’t read) and I really liked it.

If you like forbidden love, betrayal, shifters, hierarchies, broken promises but also a love that promises forever and pulls the packs together, this series is for you.  What I didn’t like is that there is another book to be read and I have to wait.  🙁  Yes, I liked this series and will definitely be reading it when the book budget allows.

Did I mention that there are gargoyle shifters?  Squee!  I didn’t…see you really need to read this series.  Its fresh, different and above all, fascinating.  It’s a paranormal/shifter/ancient/did that truly happen? kinda  book.
