Review of Shannon’s Law by Emma Calin

Photo B - Shannon's Law tour Cover artBLURB:

Wild child inner-city cop Shannon Aguerri walks a dangerous line between her methods and justice. When the bosses lose their nerve, after yet another maverick mission, she is transferred to green pastures to play out the role of a routine village cop. When she encounters signs of slave and drug trafficking she homes in on serious millionaire criminals.

As a loner she has attracted men but nothing has stuck. When she meets Spencer, the hunky and widowed Earl of Bloxington, there is an immediate rapport between them. Their social differences mean nothing to their passion and need.

Already in the mix is an upper class female rival – who has long plotted her way into the Earl’s bed. The jealousy is an evil shade of green and the anger is a violent scarlet.

Often inhibited by a sense of duty and honour, Spencer is slow to reveal his feelings. When Shannon confronts him with the need to choose between her word and that of her rival, he does not immediately support her.

All issues are set aside, when they are forced together to carry out a desperate rescue mission. Their love is stronger than everything ranged against them.

A few warnings about the book.  Trust me, you will thank me later.  😉

1.  Emma is a Brit, through and through.  Reading the book was a delight.  So much emotion from Emma through her characters.  So don’t be afraid when you don’t quite understand something.  😉

2.  It is written with the British in mind.  Yes, I would have to re-read a sentence or two because I didn’t understand the word or meaning behind it.  Trust me, its worth it.

3.  There are a couple of history lessons through out the book.  I especially liked Napoleon and Josephine.  Spenser is such a romantic.

4.  Cricket…

5.  Their police procedurals are different over there.  This is NOT CSI folks.

6.  Yes, there is a child (teenager) in the book.  He’s a cutie but also very integral to the plot.  Not just a plot device.

Okay, so there are my warnings.  Not too many but no worries.  This is a love story between a cop and the Earl that loves her.  In polite English society this would have never worked.  You know, classes and all.  But Ms. Calin brings a freshness to the trope that I really liked.  Shannon was wild in her job but her heart was something that she never worried about.  It was all about getting the bad guys and making her part of England safe.  I truly understood that about her and related to that.  Yes, did Shannon have the wide eye look when she went further into Spenser life?  Yes, but she never made fun of it or him.  She respected him and his life.

Spenser was a dream.  Earl, car restorer, not sure of his teenage son and in love with a commoner.  A cop no less.  What I especially liked about him was his respect for Shannon and his job.  Sure, was he worried at times?  You bet he was but he knew that being a cop was very much part of who and what Shannon was.  Plus come on…the bed, the ring and the references to Josephine and Napoleon?

The suspense element was good too but what I really wanted to do is slap Jasmine upside her head but in the end…she really got the bad end.  The slave trafficking and drug lords were very well thought out and it showed on the page.  It was interesting and well paced through out the book.  Ms. Calin deftly combined the romance, intrigue and suspense plots together.  Most authors would have gotten it wrong but Ms. Calin nailed it.  Plus, the secondary characters in the book are top notch.  Don’t miss out on Mel, Shannon’s BFF.

The epilogue is a WOOT!  Don’t miss out on some of the references to some very well know Brits.  Hint, hint!  Ms. Calin makes use of Spenser’s ties to the crown and I loved it.

Oh wait…and there is an Elvis impersonator!!!!  Okay, enough of the review…just read the book.  You won’t be sorry.

  1. An Elvis impersonator, history lessons, and a mixed class love story. Sounds good!
