Review of Secondhand Sinners by Genevieve Lynne

Meet Genevieve:

Genevieve Lynne grew up in a small Texas town where everyone knew each other and gossip was considered a legitimate news source. She was raised on heaping doses of her grandmothers’ fabulous cooking, sweet tea, hot summer nights at the lake and maternal guilt. Even after moving to Austin to pursue her bachelor’s degree in English at The University of Texas, she never could shake the small town out of her. She’s still working on the guilt thing. She loves to incorporate the charm of crazy close families and small-town life into her stories. She now lives in Fort Worth with her husband and three sons.

About the Book:

In Bokchito, Oklahoma, you know everyone and trust no one…Emily Matthews swore she’d never expose her son Jack to her dysfunctional family that sent her running from Bokchito at only seventeen. The sins of her past still haunt her, but when her brother lands in jail, she has no choice but to go back and face her old demons.

Miller Anderson has never forgotten about the girl who ran out of his life thirteen years ago…

And with the secret he’s keeping from Emily, he knows he most likely never will. But when his daughter Abby plays matchmaker to set him up with his lost love, he can’t resist the resurgence of emotion that has them reliving their high school glory days.

Evil has a way of waiting for what it wants…

Just when Emily and Miller discover their old flame hasn’t died, they learn another fire has been smoldering in Bokchito. Her family’s long line of sins, kindled with a generation-old grudge, ignites when Emily discovers the truth about Miller’s daughter and is forced to choose between protecting Miller’s secret and the one thing she can’t afford to lose…her son Jack.

Caught up in a game of lies and dirt road scandal, Emily must risk everything to save her son and preserve Miller’s good name, or let her family’s darkest secret ruin them both.

EXCERPT:
“You’re a good mother,” he interrupted, catching her completely off guard.

“What?”

He closed his hands around hers. “When I was online, I read some stuff about what it’s like to be a parent of a kid like Jack. I don’t think I could handle it.”

“Who said I was handling it? I’m a divorced woman who hasn’t worked in six years. I don’t even have a high school diploma, and I certainly don’t have any marketable skills. I devoted seven years to a man who left me for a woman five years older than me…that’s right. She’s older than me. It seems all I have to show for it is this incredibly challenging, brilliant, annoying child who will probably never understand what love means.”

“You’re handling it. Really well.”

Emily left her hand in Miller’s. She didn’t dare move, didn’t want to do anything to shatter the fragile calm that was settling in on her as she inhaled the intoxicating aroma of fresh air and Miller’s aftershave. Memories of them together in another life wafted around her like the scent of the wildflowers and budding leaves. They were wild once.

review

I really don’t know where to start on this review.  I absolutely LOVED this book but at times, I had whiplash from the twists that the book took.  Seriously.  Plus, I was NOT expecting the suspense element that was woven in the book.  I will have to say that the blurb is misleading BUT in a good way.  You think that you are getting a reunion romance with possibly the secret baby angle and BAM, the book is so much more.  😉

Ms. Lynne knows how to write a book.  And to think that this is a debut.  Now, yall know that I don’t gush too much about a debut author but I will now.

I won’t go over the blurb or the excerpt above but I will tell you some of things that I found to be extraordinary.

  1.  Characters and I mean ALL of them are layered.  Richly layered that I still don’t think that we have heard the last of Emily and Miller.  There is just so much to love about them but they each stand on their own.
  2.   Yes, there are children in the book.  Much of the book is centered around Abby and Jack.  Ms. Lynne did her homework when it came to Abby and Jack.  I won’t spoil it but what Abby and Jack deal with every day is researched and handled beautifully.
  3.   The suspense element.  OMG, I didn’t expect that.AT.ALL.  I loved it, devoured it and still want more.  The villain is vile, evil and didn’t even deserve what happened in the end.  I would have been a lot meaner.
  4.   Ms. Lynne nailed small town Oklahoma.  I’m from small town Oklahoma.  Trust me, I felt like I was sitting on the grandmother’s front porch or the corner drugstore.
  5.   I was expecting a full on romance book, this is not it.  They have one smexy time and it was actually kinda funny; in a good way.  It showed character development, not just a sex scene.  And then again, it’s not graphic.  Why did I tell you this because it is a reunion romance.  This is about Emily and Miller reconnecting and finding that love again.  Sure, the road is rocky and there are many roadblocks but watching them work it out is a treat.

Ms. Lynne is an author to watch.  Her characters are layered, the plot of the book was fast paced, had twists that I never saw coming and an ending that was too precious…even for me.  She surprised me being a debut author and I don’t surprise too easily.  Awesome!
