Can his safe haven be enough for her?
Emma Meadows never imagined that sticking to her principles against an act of corruption by a New York senator would cost her her job as VP of communications. Heartbroken, she retreats to her cottage in the Adirondacks to lick her wounds and, in the process, rescues an injured dog that only Josh Whitmore can save.
The veterinarian works diligently to bring dog and woman back to full fighting form, until allegations against the senator become more serious. Seeing Emma’s reaction to the increasing pressure, Josh realizes that inevitably she’ll find a way back to the top…and he’ll likely lose her for good.
What can I say? I love this line from Harlequin. Clean, sweet, emotional and always heartwarming. This one is a bit different, though. There’s kissing in it. I know, right? You feel the love flow through Josh and Emma slowly at first. Ms. James takes her time with them in becoming a full-fledged couple. Sure, they date and kiss but it’s that inevitable saying of the 3 little words from Josh throws a wrench into Emma’s thoughts and feelings. I liked that. Typically, it’s the woman that falls first but not here. Oh no, Josh falls hard and fast. He would do anything for her and Max and Theo.
Their cute meet is funny but also kinda sad. Like the lump in throat sad because of Theo. But no worries in the end. I just loved how Ms. James brought Josh’s practice into the story and Emma finds a friend in Sherry. She’s a nut but the good kind. A sounding board for Emma but also one that lets Emma have her first true girlfriend. I also liked Anna, Josh’s sister. Speaking of parents, the scene where Emma meets Josh’s parents for the first time. Classic but charming nonetheless.
The suspense element is clever, too. The way that Ms. James wove it in…Between Richard, the ex-boyfriend, Daniel the reporter, Arlene and even Chad. Some of the things that were done by the senator. I just can’t imagine and the depth of the corruption. It was very interesting how Ms. James came up with that plot. I’m in awe. I would have never thought of that. It read like any great suspense/political thriller that I’ve ever read. 😉 Trust me, it’s that good.
Overall, I just loved Emma and Josh. They took their time in their romance and realized just how much they truly meant to each other. Bravo to the people at Harlequin for this line. You have a fan for life. Did I mention that there are dogs and puppies?
