Bargaining with the Boss

by Jennifer Shirk

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Kinsley just wanted to have some fun for a change. Then she wakes up in a stranger’s bed, with her bridesmaid dress on backward and a hazy memory of what happened at her friend’s wedding. With a quick escape, she can get back to her predictable life. But then she meets her new boss—the same guy she’d woken up next to—and seeing him with a clear head doesn’t make him any less attractive.

Mixing business with pleasure has never been Damon’s style, and easily avoided, but the hotel he just bought comes with an unexpected perk—its manager. “Sensible” Kinsley today is as alluring as “impulsive” Kinsley was the night before, and she talks him into a deal. If she can turn around the hotel by the end of summer, he won’t tear it down to put up a more profitable casino.

Their plan is simple…until falling for each other becomes more than they bargained for.

Excerpt One:

Kinsley jumped up and launched herself into his arms. “Thank you,” she breathed into his shoulder. “Thank you for believing in me.”

Damon stilled. Then his arms slowly came around her and he pressed her to his chest. “You’re welcome,” he whispered in her hair.

She made no movement to separate herself from his embrace. She knew it was wrong—highly inappropriate, actually—to be standing in her office, burrowing in her boss’s chest like a chipmunk. Anyone could barge in. But he felt so nice, so warm with that freshly showered, masculine scent all his own. She couldn’t resist staying in his arms a little longer until good sense entered her brain again.

Kinsley dropped her arms and they both slowly drew apart. Damon didn’t look happy. In fact, his jaw was clenched so tight, it looked like it might shatter. She just hoped this little overly affectionate stunt didn’t cost her her job.

“Sorry,” she muttered, her face growing hotter with every passing second. “Sometimes I let my emotions get carried away. I didn’t mean to…jump you. It’s just that I’m so grateful.”

Damon remained silent, his brows furrowed together as if contemplating how to tactfully fire her without hurting her feelings.

“It, uh, won’t happen again,” she assured him. “The hugging part, not the thanking you part.”

“I know what part you were referring to,” he growled. She swallowed. “Oh, right. Of course. Sorry for the… Sorry.” Somebody tape my mouth closed now.

Damon held up his hands in a time-out sign. “We’re off the clock, right?” he asked.

Dread had her hesitating. Was he really going to fire her? She nodded and slowly met his steel-blue eyes.

Then before she could blink, Damon St. James pulled her back into his arms and kissed her.

Another catnip read for me.  That’s 3 in a row.  I think that’s a record for me.  Anyway…let’s face it.  It’s an Entangled Bliss book, the author is a fave of mine, Jennifer Shirk and yes, I do like “sweet” books.  As most know, I don’t watch the Hallmark Channel at all.  I avoid it actually but when it comes to reading sweet romances I’m all in.  In fact, I actually prefer them over all the hot books.  Just don’t tell everyone.  I’ve got a rep to protect.  LOL!

What drew me to the book was the author.  I’ve read most of her books and I just love her writing style.  She writes what I love to read.  Sweet romances that have a depth to them, humorous situations but most importantly, the slow build of the romance.  Ms. Shirk doesn’t rush her stories.  She lets the characters talk and act in their own way and doesn’t muck up them with filler.  Sure, Damon and Kinsley had some outside distractions and secondary characters to deal with but the bulk of the book is about Damon and Kinsley.

Kinsley could have come across as a complete airhead but what I really liked about her was that she didn’t have the self-confidence that she thinks she doesn’t have.  Her ex did a number on her but Damon gave her a chance.   But she earned it.  Damon is damaged.  Yes, I said it.  I loved him though.  I liked how he finally had the sit down with his dad…10 years too late but still.  It was sweet that they finally were able to talk and set things straight.  Of course, you can’t read a Ms. Shirk book without a sibling or two to cause some sort of trouble.  Wade…I can’t wait to see what she does with him in a future book.  *hint hint*  I really liked him and would love to read his backstory.

Overall, Ms. Shirk does it again.  I don’t know what I would do if she ever stopped writing.  I know, crawl into a little ball and rock myself.  Even if you don’t read sweet romances, you really need to check out Ms. Shirk’s work.  You won’t be sorry.
