Off the Clock

by Kenzie Michaels

BLURB:

Austin Harmon is intrigued by his quiet, efficient new administrative assistant. Why does she have an obsession with her watch, and what does she do after hours?

Cara has put her social life on hold while caring for her elderly mother. But after her boss helps her through a crisis, she can’t deny their attraction. Romance and Alzheimer’s don’t mix… or do they?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
“Austin! Where did you find her?” His best friend Ryan clapped him on the back. “She’s fantastic, man! Nothing like Leslie.”
“She answered my ad in the paper. She’s my office assistant.” Austin Harmon took a sip of his drink and followed her with his eyes as she paused to speak with an elderly couple.
“You lucky dog! You banging her or is she taken?” Ryan adjusted his striped tie.
A flash of anger welled up. “Stay away from her,” Austin warned. “Leslie left my office records a mess and Cara finished sorting everything out today. She’s a dream come true.”
“I’ll say. And are you kidding? Andrea would string me up alive if she even caught me looking at another woman. I was just thinking of you, man.” Ryan smiled and held out his hand.
Austin shook it. “After the Leslie fiasco, no more office romances. Harmony House doesn’t need any more visits from the Health Department.”
Review:
As most know I love my Kenzie books.  They are hot, sweet and emotional fulfilling.  This one is no exception to that but I felt like something was missing.  Don’t get me wrong.  I loved the book and the storyline was strong and the hospital scene.  Wow!  I felt like there was something missing with Austin.
I loved Cara.  She is strong and efficient but with no help from her siblings, her life has revolved around her mother and the disease.  I enjoyed the relationship that Cara did have with her mother, even if it was the small moments.  It made Cara’s situation that more poignant.  Always the caregiver and never thinking of herself whether it be at home or work.
Austin, to me, lacked any type of backstory except for his other assistant.  I would have liked to get to know a bit better, outside of the job.  That said, he was always there for Cara when he finally broke down the walls.  I also liked that he wanted to be her friend first, lover second.  The scene in her bedroom when she mentioned that it had been awhile.  LOL!
The secondary story with her brother and mother were strong and powerful.  I could not imagine someone having to go through something like that but Kenzie pulled me in to the point that I started misting up.  At that point in the book, I finally connected with Austin.  🙂
If you are looking for a short, spicy, sweet love story that is not your run of the mill assistant falling for her boss…Off the Clock is for you.  There’s no virgin, BDSM, douche of a boss, or meddling people getting in the way of Cara and Austin’s HEA.  🙂
  1. Harlie…You do a great job in your review of summing up the more important points. Thanks for that!
  2. @Melissa: Sometimes those people are the hardest to break through their ‘hands off’ resolve. I wondered what it was going to take for Austin to break through Cara’s walls….and then her brother paved the way.
    @KP: Thank you:) I’ve only got six books out, but Harlie loves me and thinks I should keep going, lol!
    @Jennifer: Thank you for stopping by!
    Harlie, you’ll be happy to know I’ve begun writing a sequel to Wild At Heart. I think this mountain hair(I’m on vacation in Colorado) helps kick-start the creative juices. It’s only three paragraphs at the moment (I’m too busy taking pictures!), but maybe I’ll get to work on it more.
    1. Don’t tease me Kenzie on the sequel! LOL! I’ve enjoyed your pics on FB. Keep them coming.
  3. Thank you Harlie:) You know I love you:) Austin’s back story snuck into Class Reunion, making my then-stand-alone book part of a trilogy:) I’m so happy you liked it, and yes, everyone is saying it’s too short, lol! You know me; they might sneak into another book I’m working on, so there’s always the potential for a 4th, lol!
    @Shelley, Victoria. and Maria: Thank you sooo much for stopping by!
    @Janice: I too have witnessed many work place relationships, and while some don’t work and cause a lot of drama, there are the exceptions:)
  4. Very nice review – this does sound like something I would enjoy reading and I love the cover. Thanks for the giveaway.
  5. Kenzie, since I’m retired now and not working in an office (hotbeds of gossip, one-upmanship, jealousy, affairs) I like to read office stories like you’ve written–to see HEA’s and problems solved. So often while I was working office romances and problems didn’t get resolved…they either went on and on and on–or someone quit or got fired. So I want to see Austin and Cara achieve their HEA! jdh2690@gmail.com
