Learning New Tricks

BLURB:

Archer should be focusing on how to keep his comic book shop from financially crashing and burning in an epic way. However, when his sexy-as-hell best friend and Sunday-afternoon-movie buddy, Tori, asks him to teach her how to keep emotions out of sex, he welcomes the distraction.

Tori couldn’t ask for a better best friend than Archer. He respects her fandom, and he lets her sell her custom-made costumes in his store. Even better, he’s willing to give her a hands-on demonstration of how to keep love and sex separate. Experience has taught her not to fall for a guy who’s as infatuated with an ex-girlfriend as Archer is, so she’s already got the no-love bit covered.

With each new lesson, the line between the physical and emotional blurs a little more. Can they let go of their pasts—and learn a few new tricks along the way—or will they lose their friendship and budding relationship for good?

Archer intertwined his fingers with Tori’s and tugged her off the stool. “Come on.” His voice was gentle. “Let’s de-stress.”

She didn’t resist as he pulled her up the stairs to his apartment. She was glad she didn’t mind following him, because she’d used up all her arguments for the day. When they were inside, they both kicked their shoes off out of habit. He locked the door, and then turned her so her back was to him.

His hands rested on her shoulders, thumbs softly kneading her neck. “You were brilliant today.”

She tilted her head forward, moaning at the gentle touch. “I was terrified.”

The massage deepened, and his voice was soothing. “But the important thing is, you did it anyway.”

She leaned into the attention, not sure how to respond. His lips brushed the back of her neck, and she gasped in pleasure and surprise.

“Sorry. I shouldn’t have done that.”

“You should have.” She tilted her head to the side to expose more of her neck. She’d turned off the filter which kept her from speaking her mind; part of her wasn’t ready to turn it back on yet. Especially with other parts of her turned on by his touch, and his soft lips. “And you should do it again.”

His tongue glided up her skin until he met her ear, and his teeth nipped at the lobe. His whisper brushed her skin, sending a pleasant chill through her. “Have I ever told you how much I like it when you talk like that?”

guestpost

Hi, Harlie, thanks so much for having me back! It’s always a blast to visit your site.

I’m touring the blog circuit this week, and talking about the final book in my Bits & Bytes series, Learning New Tricks. The hero, Archer, owns a comic book store. And it’s more than a little bit because when I was younger, comics were my gateway to my love of the fantastic.

When I was in first grade, we had an assignment to draw our favorite TV show. We also had to write why we liked it, and what time it came on. I was so disappointed, because mine was Batman, and I didn’t know what time it came on—I’d just start watching cartoons on Saturday mornings, and then it would be there sometime in that time slot.

Fortunately, I did know that Super Friends came on first, at six am. And Batman was a Super Friend, so I had an excuse to draw the man in the mask and the eared cowl.

As I got older, and had a little of my own spending money, I discovered comic books. The library was great for normal books, but I liked the pictures too. Not just any pictures, but the gorgeous artwork that came from action shots, and *bam* *biff* *pow*. Batman was still a favorite—because he was brooding and rich. And how cool would it be to buy all those gadgets?

But Spiderman moved to the top of my list. A normal guy in extraordinary circumstances, who as the years passed, found himself surrounded by the super-human, and even Gods, and still managed to hold his own.

As time went on, my tastes grew and shifted. I discovered manga (Japanese comics), and an entirely new method of storytelling, and some even more gorgeous artwork. But those original heroes, Batman, Spiderman, they’re still my favorites (and I’m an absolute fan girl about almost any super hero movie). I can’t imagine leaving that type of spectacular behind.

So that makes me wonder, if comics have had such a huge impact on my life, what kind of things did you read that impacted all y’all in your younger years?

bookreview

I swear I’ve NEVER wanted to slap someone upside their head in a book more than I did Archer.  Talk about someone that didn’t have a clue, put his foot in his mouth and generally just a bonehead.  Its bad enough that he was still a bit hung up on Riley but to drive the knife that much more in Tori’s heart at times…Grrrr….again, I really wanted to hurt him.

Poor Tori.  That girl had it rough on the work side.  I agreed with everything that she did in regards to her job and I’m glad that she finally spoke up.  Sometimes being passive in your work just doesn’t cut it.  It showed real character growth for Tori.  What I didn’t get was her wishy washiness on the costumes.  It takes real talent to be able to sew costumes and she does it well.

I have to bring up Riley in this review.  While I loved her in Toeing the Line, I really showed a major dislike for her in Archer’s story.  I know, she was necessary but egging on Archer in the stairwell…Ugh!  She did redeem herself with Tori in the end and I liked how we got an ending to her’s and Zane’s story.  One thing about Zane…I’m still in love with him.  So Alpha when it came to Riley and the scenes with Archer were well done, too.

Please keep in mind that this book has way more smexy times and more graphic than Riley and Zane’s story.  Its needed to show how just having hawt times can lead to the more confusing emotions that creep up.  And wow, just wow…Archer and Tori had a lot of confusion between them and some.  What was interesting though was how Ms. Lindt dealt with Archer first.  She did an excellent job of making him look in the mirror and realize just how different his relationships were between Riley and Tori.  When he finally figured it out, I fist pumped.  🙂

Tori was a mess when it came to her emotions about Archer.  She took a little longer than Archer but hey…when you overhear a conversation between your lover and his ex-lover…I’d be confused too.  Honestly, I think her talk with Riley really helped her finally figure everything out.

In the end, I’m sorry that they series has ended.  Yes, I only read the last two books but I fell in love with Zane, Archer, Tori and Riley.  I really should go back and read the prequel and Conflict of Interest.  My bad but I will fix that this summer.

Overall, Ms. Lindt has written a beautiful friends to lovers book that shows the good, the bad and the ugly times that it takes for two people to fall in love.  Throw in an ex, job woes, a hero that can’t keep his mouth shut and an heroine that you know is just the right person for the hero and BAM, you have Learning New Tricks.  I can’t wait to see what else Ms. Lindt has up her sleeve for me to read.

  1. I have always enjoyed reading. I loved The Secret Seven Series by Enid Blyton when I was young. I think when you find the joy of reading when you are young it stays with you your whole life.

  2. Learning New Tricks, is a super read. Fabulous blog tour all the way through Allyson, I’ve read most even if I haven’t commented on all of them, and its been good to learn so much about you and about the books too.

  3. I’ve been a heavy reader all my life. As a child I devoured my books under the covers long after lights out, reading favorites such as My Antonia, Oliver Twist, Madeline, Ramona the Pest and The Secret Garden. I was six. I used these books, as well as others, to teach myself to speak English and consequently, because of the sheer complexity of the books I chose to read I developed an all encompassing love affair with the written word. That being said, the book and/or author that most influenced me was Sweet Savage Love by Rosemary Rogers. I found this, and others of the same genre, in my mother’s secret stash and read them every chance I got. I was twelve. I’ve been kinky ever since. True Story! Lmao 🙂

Allyson, I’ve had so much fun following your blog tour. Your interviews were great and I truly enjoyed interacting with you. I wish you all the best in the future and hope to ‘see’ more of you in times to come!

    1. Elise-Maria, Ramona was my hero when I was younger. I read all those books so many times I wore out the library copies, and I wanted my hair cut just like hers in the book where she gets her hair cut.

I discovered romance novels at about the same age as you, lol. I couldn’t believe those kinds of things had been written down, and I couldn’t wait to find more of them 😀 It’s been great talking to you, and I hope you see you around the internet, with or without a blog tour.
