Author Interview with Rachel Brimble featuring If I Want You w/a rafflecopter giveaway! @RachelBrimble #giveaway #romanticsuspense

Harlie here:  I’m so embarrassed.  My English Rose is one of my all-time favorite authors and people and I had to PM her to get her to send me the book for review AGAIN!  Yes, she sent it last month and I swear I saved it somewhere on my computer so that I could download it later to read.  Much to my embarrassment, I have no clue what I did with it and she graciously re-sent it to me.  Needless to say that even though the review isn’t part of my participation in the tour, I did promise to read it and post my review on the tour.  Unfortunately, I haven’t finished it.  This has never happened before and it will never happen again.  I will be updating my post with the review within a day or two.  You can always find my reviews on Goodreads under the name Harlie Williams or Amazon (Brian’s Mom).  I know that I go on and on about Ms. Brimble’s work but if you have never read her books, you really need to.  From Romantic Suspense, Victorian Historical and of course, her Templeton Cove series, there is something for everyone.

Excerpt Three:

Sensing her discomfort, he stopped and leaned against the bureau. God, did he frighten her? Surely not, or she wouldn’t be here. Or did she sense his attraction toward her and would do all she could to deflect it? He didn’t doubt for one minute his eyes gave away his appreciation whenever he looked at her.

He lifted the can to his lips. “So, what have you been thinking about?”

She tapped a peach-painted nail on the bureau. “This.”

“The bureau?”

“Principal White’s bureau.”

He frowned. “How did you know it was hers?”

“She mentioned you were working on a bureau for her when I was in the school office. I assumed this is it.”

“It is.”

“Good, because that makes it all the easier for me to give you your first assignment.”

“You want me to talk to her.”

She smiled, took a few tentative steps closer to him. “Got it in one, Watson.”

He smiled, pleased to see genuine mischief shining in her eyes. “I’m Watson?”

“Yep.”

“So that makes you Holmes. Not sure I like being anyone’s sidekick.”

Another couple of steps closer until no more than a couple of feet separated them. She met his eyes and his heart kicked. Her V-neck shirt was just the right side of professional. Yet, the way it revealed her collarbones and hugged her full breasts made him want to reach out and pull her into his arms, kiss her, taste her…

“You’re staring, Watson.”

He blinked and snapped his gaze from her breasts, rare heat hitting his face. “Sorry. You look nice.”

“Thanks.” She raised her eyebrows and nodded toward his chest. “So do you.”

He smiled. “Why don’t we go inside? It’s way too hot out here.”

Welcome Rachel Brimble Please start off by telling us a little about yourself.

Hi, I live near the famous Georgian city of Bath with my husband of 19 years, our two teenage daughters and fabulous chocolate Labrador, Tyler. I write mainstream romance, romantic suspense and historical romance and have written twenty-two novels and two novellas. Apart from the two currently under publisher consideration, all my books have been published and available for download.

When I’m not writing, I love to read, knit and watch far too much TV – I also love to walk for miles with my dog, friends and family as well as enjoying far too many pub lunches and chilled white wine!

Is If I Want You a single title, or part of a series?

Right now, it is a single title, but never say never! I LOVE writing series and if the right story comes along I’d happily revisit Barlington, the small English town where If I Want You is set.

What were your inspirations for the story?
A lot of my story ideas come from the news and/or magazines and this story started to form in my mind after I watched a news piece where a missing child was reunited with her parents. I tried to imagine how her poor parents and the little girl felt when they were separated, what they were thinking, wanting to do. Before I knew it, I’d put myself in the position of the parents, the child and her abductor and the words and situation started to flow.

I was a little worried about writing a child abduction into a romantic suspense for fear it might put potential readers off, but I’ve handled it as sensitively as possible and the romance helps to soften the crime element.

Please share your setting for If I Want You. Have you ever lived or visited there? If so, what did you like most?
The town’s name of Barlington is completely fictional, but in my mind it is based on a small town near where I grew up in Bristol. There is one particular scene when the hero and heroine revisit a wooded area where she played as a child – the wood and the street around it is an actual place where I played and longed to live, but the area was so much more affluent than my parents could’ve afforded at the time.

When did the writing bug first bite?

A very long time ago when I was eight or nine! Life happened and I took a VERY long break until my youngest daughter started school full-time and I had a ‘now or never’ moment. I started to write my first novel which the Wild Rose Press published in 2007 (Searching For Sophie). Since then I have had at least one book published every year.

Who are you favorite authors, book/series?

Favorite authors are Nora Roberts (and her writing as JD Robb), Jill Shalvis and Philippa Gregory – I am in love with so many of Nora’s series there are too many to list, I love Jill’s Lucky Harbor series and Philippa Gregory’s Tudor series.

If you could have an author roundtable discussion with any authors, who would you invite?

See above as well as crime novelists Alex Grecian and Tess Gerritsen to spice things up a little!

Do you have any hobbies or special things you like to do in your spare time?
My absolute favorite thing second to writing is knitting! I’m addicted! Since I started about ten years ago, I now find it impossible to watch TV and not knit so I combine two of my favorite things and relax every evening

What’s the strangest thing you’ve heard or seen?

The eeriest thing I’ve ever had happened, which was also a blessing, is when I had my eldest daughter she would have times of crying and no matter what I did, I couldn’t stop her. Whenever I was pushed to the end of my patience and the tears started to well in my eyes, she would suddenly stop and watch an invisible something as it moved about the room. Her tears quickly became laughter.

I really believe she was seeing my husband’s grandfather who has often been ‘felt’ by other members of the family. He was a massive part of the family and a huge character who would cheer everyone up when they were sad.

What is the one thing that you would tell an inspiring writer to do?

Write! Far too many aspiring writers dream about writing but don’t actually do it – another thing is not finishing a piece of work. Get it done and send it out to agents and publishers, it’s the only way it’s going to happen.

#Review of Where Danger Lies (The Jake Bernstein FBI Series Book 3) by Donna Del Oro w/a rafflecopter giveaway!

Where Danger Lies

by Donna Del Oro

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Romantic suspense
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Based on actual circumstances, two cases prove that truth is indeed stranger than fiction as FBI Special agent, Jake Bernstein, is pulled into two apparently unrelated cases while on medical leave in San Diego.  A female officer assigned to Naval Base Coronado is killed and a Muslim woman is viciously beaten and left for dead. Jake knows about seeking truth and justice amid lies and deception. He suspects something else is at work, two very different evils overlapping as two different worlds violently collide.

Meg Larsen has come to terms with Jake’s role in her beloved grandmother’s death, accepts that he has a dangerous job, and is proud of his role in thwarting terrorists who threatened countless lives. She’s willing to aid him in his investigations but not so accepting of his refusal to commit to her and give her a reason to alter her career plans.

Even as Jake arrives at a crossroads in his relationship with Meg, he must stay alert and strive to keep both of them safe.  Although San Diego is sunny and picture-perfect, you never know…WHERE DANGER LIES.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
“NCIs? What’s the crime, Admiral Snider?”
“Murder. One of the officers on my ship. I think an objective look is needed.”
“What happened to him?”
“Her. Lieutenant Samantha Carlton was found dead in the trunk of her car three days ago. The preliminary tox screen showed nothing, but the lab did an advanced analysis. She’d been poisoned with ketamine. Made her heart stop. She was forty-one and in excellent physical condition. Also, someone crushed her larynx and windpipe.”
“Sounds like a case of overkill.” Jake rubbed the underside of his chin from force of habit. Intriguing case but he really didn’t want to get involved. “Perhaps premeditated, but made to look like a crime of passion or rage? That’d be my off-the-cuff assessment.”
“Good, now we’re getting somewhere,” Rear Admiral Snider said. “The local cops are pushing the NCI team in one direction. Their theory doesn’t hold water, that it was a hate crime. Lieutenant Carlton was gay, but more importantly, she had access to classified guided missile codes.”
“Understood,” Jake said, shaking his head. National security was at issue here. Even unofficially, he was already involved.
Okay.  Somehow I missed the second book in the series.  Seriously, I missed it.  I read the first one and LOVED it.  Jake is like my second ultimate boyfriend, next to Jack Ryan.  Which I compared the two in my earlier review and I still by it today.
I really liked this installment.  I will have to say that I felt like some things were missing but that’s only because I haven’t read the second book.  Ms. Del Oro did a good job of filling in the blanks but for this reader, I still miss having to fill in the gaps.  This one starts off with a bang and really doesn’t let up.  I loved Jake’s new job and what it means to him.  Meg, on the other hand, is a bit slower in coming to grips with it.  In fact, Meg in this installment kinda got on my nerves.  She didn’t trust Jake when he was gone.  I get the fact that she is coming to terms with Jake’s role with her grandmother but if she really wants a relationship with Jake, she really needs to learn to trust him.
The book is told in Jake’s POV which I LOVE.  Not many romantic suspense books are written in the hero’s POV so it’s interesting to get his thoughts and feelings.  Plus, he really does want things to work with Meg but it’s hard when she doesn’t make it easy for him.  The suspense in the book is top notch.  Not too over the top and realistic, too.  The way that Ms. Del Oro wove both plots is brilliant.  This is one of those times that I didn’t see certain things coming and it kept me guessing until the end.
Overall, another solid book with my book boyfriend, Jake.  I need to get the second book to fill in some of the gaps and well…just because.  It’s Jake Bernstein!  *swoon*
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Donna Del Oro’s dream since childhood (when she used to create her own comic books and share them with her friends) has been to write fiction. Escaping the humdrum of ordinary life always seemed to her an ideal form of self-entertainment. Better than TV and even better than some books! As soon as she retired from high school teaching (which was a suspenseful adventure in itself), Donna turned to fiction writing. Becoming a member of the RWA and Sisters in Crime has helped her to learn the craft and focus on what she needed to do to get published.
Besides writing Chica Lit, she writes romantic suspense and thrillers. Her two latest SMART ROMANTIC THRILLERS are: A BODYGUARD OF LIES, LIES IN WAIT (Book Two) and a paranormal thriller, THE DELPHI BLOODLINE. A BODYGUARD OF LIES takes place in present-day England, Ireland and Germany with echoes back to WW II. A Jewish-American FBI agent, who’s fluent in German, goes undercover to investigate an elderly, naturalized American grandmother, suspected of being a Nazi spy and war criminal. LIES IN WAIT follows FBI agent, Jake Bernstein (now a member of a CounterTerrorism Task Force), to Silicon Valley. Working undercover as a Muslim biotech scientist, he is recruited to join a sleeper cell intent on terrorist activities. All three of her published thrillers remain on Musa Publishing’s mystery imprint’s Top Twenty Bestselling books.
#Review of Second Chance in Laguna (Finding Forever in Laguna series #1) by Claire Marti w/a rafflecopter giveaway! @clairepmarti
Second Chance in Laguna
by Claire Marti
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Contemporary Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
When Sophie Barnes’s fiancé jilts her at the altar, her carefully planned life implodes. Considering her ex’s betrayal to be a rude wake-up call, she leaves everything she knows in San Diego and flees to Laguna Beach. She vows to transform her life by avoiding men for a year and by fulfilling her dream of writing a wildly successful novel.
Sophie’s new landlord, Nicholas Morgan, is a gorgeous, successful architect with a player reputation. He makes it tough for Sophie to remember that she’s sworn to be single. Nick’s avoided the intimacy of a long-term relationship–until Sophie’s independence, courage, and beauty touch his guarded heart. Both Sophie and Nick are terrified of being hurt again, but can they resist the pull of true love?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt One:

Nick arrived right on time, looking gorgeous in faded jeans and a plain white t-shirt. How did he always manage to start the butterflies fluttering in her stomach? Just by standing there with the setting sun framing him? She was in trouble.

“Hi beautiful, ready to go?” He clasped her face in his hands and planted a soft kiss on her lips.

Returning his kiss, Sophie wound her arms around his neck and deepened it. She couldn’t resist. His strong arms wrapped around her waist, hugging her close to his broad chest.

“Mmmm, feel free to greet me like that every time I come over,” he said, lips curved up into a sweet smile.

Heat washed her cheeks and she returned his smile. “Let’s go. Prepare to be blown away by the movie snack of the century.”

Determined to keep things light and enjoy the movie before “the talk,” Sophie thrust down the lick of panic bubbling in her gut. She’d accomplished next to nothing all afternoon, instead wrestling with whether she needed to tell him about Doug.

The angel on her shoulder whispered to tell him because if they were going to have any kind of relationship, even a friends-with-benefits one, honesty and trust were vital. The devil urged her to zip it. They’d only known each other a few weeks. What if he lived up to his “Player of Laguna” reputation and expected only a fun fling? Even though he seemed deeper than that. What if she scared him off with a premature talk?

Welcome Claire Marti! Please start off by telling us a little about yourself.

My name is Claire Marti and I live in Encinitas, California, a sleepy beach town about twenty-five miles north of San Diego. I’ve been writing stories since I was a child. I majored in English at the University of Virginia, practiced law briefly, and transitioned into teaching yoga and writing full-time over the last few years.

My debut novel, Second Chance in Laguna, launched on March 31, 2017. The story grew from themes of starting over, carpe diem, and of living life to the fullest.

Is Second Chance in Laguna a single title, or part of a series?

Second Chance in Laguna is the first in the Finding Forever in Laguna series. It’s a contemporary romance set in, surprise, Laguna Beach, California. At Last in Laguna, the second book in the series will release later in 2017, and Sunset in Laguna, the third book should launch in early 2018.

What were your inspirations for the story?

Taking a negative experience like learning that the person you love is a serial cheater and turning it into an opportunity to transform your entire life. I love the idea of a new door opening when another one closes. Life is a cycle of growth—we’re always changing and learning. My heroine in Second Chance in Laguna, Sophie Barnes, is jilted at the altar and it’s a wake-up call for her. She realizes she isn’t living her most authentic life and takes a risk to follow her dreams.

Please share your setting for (book title). Have you ever lived or visited there? If so, what did you like most?

As you might guess from the title, the setting is Laguna Beach, California. I chose the setting because of its romantic atmosphere. With its gorgeous green hills, charming architecture, breathtaking beaches, and proliferation of art galleries, Laguna feels like a sanctuary. The first time I visited the tiny beach enclave, I felt transported to a magical new world.

On a personal note, Laguna holds a special place in my heart: I got engaged on the beach there. My passion for Laguna fuels my writing and hopefully sparks the same enthusiasm in readers.

When did the writing bug first bite?

I was a voracious reader at a young age. Writing came naturally for me and I started writing stories in elementary school. We rescued a baby squirrel and I fell in love with Squeaky. Naturally, he deserved a book. My cat Tom and my brother’s boa constrictor, Napoleon Bonaparte, each also starred in a book. Second Chance in Laguna features a rescue dog named Bailey and cat named Zack.

Who are you favorite authors, book/series?

Nora Roberts: Gallagher’s of Ardmore trilogy, Irish Born trilogy, Key trilogy, Three Sisters trilogy—did I mention I love her trilogies?

Kerrigan Byrne: Victorian Rebels series,

Ernest Hemingway, A Moveable Feast and The Sun Also Rises,

Jane Austen, Ayn Rand, Julie James, Lisa Kleypas, Sarah Maclean

If you could have an author roundtable discussion with any authors, who would you invite?

Nora Roberts, Ernest Hemingway, Oscar Wilde, Kerrigan Byrne, J.R. Ward, Sarah MacLean, and Anne Rice.

Do you have any hobbies or special things you like to do in your spare time?

I love walking on the beach every day, reading, listening to live music, traveling every chance I get, practicing and teaching yoga, and spending time with my husband and friends. I love delicious food, as long as someone else prepares it!

What’s the strangest thing you’ve heard or seen?

A few years ago, we visited The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. It’s the place that inspired Stephen King’s terrifying story, The Shining. You can feel otherworldly energy in the hotel and I have the shadows of nightmares to prove it.

What is the one thing that you would tell an aspiring writer to do?

Never give up. Keep writing. Trust your voice. Here’s one of my favorite quotes: Don’t forget-no one else sees the world the way you do, so no one else can tell the stories that you have to tell. Charles de Lint
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First of all, congratulations on your debut.  I remember when my one an only book came out.  I was over the moon and also in disbelief that someone took a chance on me.  But enough about me; on with the review.
This book starts off fast and doesn’t let up.  I like that when reading a new/debut author.  Ms. Marti doesn’t bog down the story with unnecessary details and since this is the first book of a series, I feel that we will get more of the Morgans, including Nick’s sister, Alyssa.  In fact, I feel like she has only scratched the surface with Alyssa and Brandt, Nick’s BFF.  I mean like, WTH?  Denial, denial, denial with those two.  I loved it but I’m sure there is much more going on.  That’s what I truly liked about this story.  It has a sense of family surrounding Nick and Sophie.  Sophie’s mom is a piece but she does love her daughter.  Sophie has Kelly, her BFF.  Nick has Brandt and Alyssa.  The turn to each other through the tough times but also through the fun.
Sophie’s ex, Doug…OMG!  What a douche and it didn’t help that Heather, Nick’s office manager, just acerbated the romance between Nick and Sophie.  I don’t think that Heather is through with her quest but we will have to see.  Too bad that Doug and Heather didn’t realize that Sophie and Nick’s love for each other is stronger than what those two tried to do.  Ugh!  But that makes for good drama in a romance book and Ms. Marti nailed it.
Zack, the cat, and Bailey, the dog were great, too.  Ms. Marti makes good use of all the characters that she has created in this book and also in the series.  I believe in love at first sight and while some might think that the book is full of instalove, I don’t think so.  Nick had to figure out why he could never settle down and Sophie had to realize that men like her dad and Doug were just stupid.  She is lovable and finding Nick made her finally stand up for herself to everyone around her and to fight for what she and Nick had.  I won’t give you exactly what Nick finally figured out with his lack of commitment but I will say…AWWWWW!  He’s such a sweetie.
Overall, I really liked Ms. Marti’s writing, her characterization, and the plotting of the book.  It’s fast with no filler.  I can’t wait to read the rest of the series later this year.  Bring on Alyssa, Brandt, and Kelly.
