One Unforgettable Friday

GENRE: Contemporary Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Lizzie York, a young paraplegic, has the chance to teach at a new school in Oldcastle. On a quest for independence, and to live alone, out from her brother’s watchful eye, she encounters discrimination from narrow-minded villagers. Toss into the mix: a school employee who sets her heart racing, a home of her own, and work she is passionate about.
Peter Barrington, a London solicitor, invests in Bright Academy. Having experienced pain and loss in his past, he became a workaholic. He now desires a quiet life in the country. He meets Lizzie, is immediately smitten, but respects her need for independence. As they work together, their mutual respect and love grows.
When someone hides in the woods and photographs them, Peter does everything in his power to protect Lizzie. But Lizzie is up for a fight. Will their love be strong enough to overcome hatred, and intent to harm, so they can forge a future together?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt One:

“I do apologize for the interruption, ladies.” He smiled at Lina. “I need a document signed. From the county. This should be the last. And I have a couple of things to go over with you.”

“Okay,” Lina said, chewing at the sweet in her mouth and swallowing. “No problem.”

Lizzie tried hard to ignore the handsome man who caused her stomach to flutter and her heart to pound. His deep baritone voice, smooth as honey, trickled to places it had no business. She cleared her throat and resisted the urge to clap her hands. “We need to get started.” The women had no clue how much work was involved. She took a quick peek at Peter. He and Lina could attend to business, but this project had to start right away. “In front of you is a stack of yellow netting, a pair of pinking shears, green ribbon and…wait for it, a dish of boiled sweets.”

In three long strides, Peter crossed the room and stood beside her. He wasn’t an overly tall man, his body wiry but muscular. He picked up a piece of the netting and rubbed it between long, tapered fingers, then glanced about at the ribbons and sweets, his gaze turning thoughtful. “This is amazing. The place looks like a factory. I might need photos.” He fished out his phone.

“No. No pictures, please.” Lina swatted his arm. Lizzie doubted she’d ever think a wise thought again as she inhaled the man’s delicious scent: clean linen and citrus mixed with something spicy. She swallowed hard, overcome by his nearness. The way the room lacked air. The way his long, elegant fingers, lightly held the netting.

This is such a sweet romance and story.  I adored it but let me back up for a minute.  Lizzie is in a wheelchair.  There I said it.  So what is romantic about that?  Plenty and I’ll tell you why.  One of my cousins has severe Cerebral Palsy.  Born with it actually.  He has an older brother and sister, too.  We were told not to ever treat Samuel any differently than another other kid, so we didn’t.  He grew up to be smarter than his siblings.  Was mainstreamed in both public school and college.  Graduated from Illinois University and ended up married to his caregiver.  They had children (yes, the old-fashioned way) but sadly divorced.  He never missed a beat in the way that approached his life and how he lived it.  And yes, he is still alive and living with his parents.

So when I decided to read Lizzie and Peter’s story, I came into with my eyes wide open to her situation.  I didn’t read the other two stories in the series so I didn’t know the set up beforehand.  I’m so glad that I didn’t read them because I really at times wanted to slap her brother for his obsession with her.  Overprotective much?  It bothered me because of the way that I always treated my cousin.  Without kid gloves.  Just because he is in a wheelchair doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have a functioning brain cell and that he uses it.  Grrr.  Moving on…

I really liked Lizzie’s feisty personality.  I understood her and cheered for her.  Peter is the perfect partner for her.  Notice I didn’t say, hero.  She didn’t need one.  She needed a partner and she got that with him.  Of course, he overstepped in bounds but in the end, when it really counted with Roberta, he was there.  The creepiness of the photos and the hatred that came with Lizzie trying to go back to teaching.  Small towns can be so small minded but Ms. Grant wrote it in a way that not everyone is like that.

So you may be asking if there are smexy times in the book?  Well, I don’t do spoilers so you will have to find out for yourself.  *wink*  Lizzie wasn’t about to let that chair define her as a person and not everyone was on board with it.  Ms. Grant handled that aspect of the book marvelously.  It takes a while for some people to come around and then again, some just don’t.  I never saw Lizzie in the chair.  I saw her has a person that wants and needs just like everyone else.  Peter saw that, too and I adore that about him.  Plus, come on?  Dev Patel lookalike?  Yep, I’m in.  *swoon*

GENRE: Romantic suspense

BLURB:

After losing her sister to a serial killer years earlier, scientist Mia Lindgren survives by focusing on the most dangerous viruses known to man. She’s become adept at shutting herself off from human contact—until her lab partner drowns under suspicious circumstances.

Forced to accept the assistance of Nick Doyle, an FBI counter-terrorism expert on leave, she soon realizes someone at the Institute for Research of Infectious Diseases is involved in a deadly deception. As she and Nick race to find a killer who will stop at nothing to accomplish his version of Armageddon, they can’t ignore their own chemistry. But can Mia truly put the past to rest?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
Mia finished reading the articles and took a chair opposite him. If it hadn’t been for the fact they were talking about the end of the world, it would have been cozy, sitting there with her. Small problem.
“If he wasn’t dead, I’d say it would be natural for him to have them. Working with this stuff is what we do. If he came across those articles, he’d keep them.” She hesitated, averting her gaze. “I would too.”
“Well, you’re right about one thing, Bride of Frankenstein,” he said. “The man’s dead. And I’m guessing this has something to do with it.”
“So you believe my theory—about him not really drowning.”
“I’m starting to. I called to get the results of the autopsy and hopefully should have them in a day or two if nobody decides to stall.”
“You think they’re going to stall?”
“I don’t know. We’ll see. I’m supposed to be on leave, so it’s possible the powers that be don’t want me getting involved in something I shouldn’t be.”
They got that right. Under the yellow overhead light, Mia’s hair fell down over her shoulders in pale waves. He’d never seen it down. He almost wished he hadn’t.
She gave him a hard look. “Maybe you shouldn’t. I mean, you’re supposed to be getting better, aren’t you? Healing. This can’t be helping.”
“It is helping,” he said quietly. “You’re helping.”
She looked away. For several seconds, she didn’t speak. “I don’t think so,” she said at last. “I’ve never helped anybody. Not even my own mother.”
“Mia—”
“Stop, okay?” She held up a hand. “Just stop.”
“Okay.” He wanted to reach out and take her hand in his. No, he wanted to take her upstairs and show her how much she’d helped him heal, one long kiss at a time. But if he told her that he’d lose her. Whatever had happened to her in the past had scared the hell out of her. If he pushed too hard, he’d lose her.
And he wasn’t going to get involved with her in the first place. Wasn’t that what he kept telling himself?
4 in a row.  That is a record for me.  Plus, this is a new to me author.  And it deals with bioterrorism, something that I know nothing about.  I read the authors notes and definitely have a new found respect for the CDC.  Oh and Ms. Haines, I had heard about that island.  That’s some spooky stuff right there.
If I had one thing to nitpick about the book is I would have liked a bit more of the romance.  I know, I know.  Believe me, I felt the connection between Mia and Nick but I felt like it was more of an HFN.  Both of them had some serious relationship issues to be worked out.  Nick’s dead wife and Mia’s whole family issues but I still would have liked a cleaner ending.  But hey that’s just the romantic in me.
The thriller part of the book is phenomenal.  Yes, phenomenal.  There were times that I had to read some parts twice just so I could get a better sense of everything that was going on.  While the plot is simple in context, Ms. Haines has written it where there are some red herrings that I never saw coming.  You definitely have to pay attention and I love when an author makes me think while I read a suspense/thriller book.  Plus, I learned a lot about bioterrorism.  People, that’s some scary shit.  Sorry for the language but it is.  And the depths that some people will go to to make it happen.
Ms. Haines writing is very fluid and taunt.  She knows how to write a very balanced suspense/thriller.  The book starts off fast and really doesn’t let up.  Okay, there is that one time.  *wink wink*  I also liked how her secondary characters are fleshed out and not just window dressing or plot devices that make no sense.  Mia mom, Angela, is one of those characters that at first glance would be throwaway but she has depth and I especially liked how she and Mia tried to bond in the end.
Do your self a favor and pick this book up.  It’s taunt, thrilling, suspenseful and characters that you truly will care for.  Plus, I have a soft spot for the “wounded” FBI agent.  Oh yes, I didn’t mention that about Nick?  My bad.  He He!!  And if you are worried about Mia being soft?  Don’t be.  She’s tough.  Just scared when it comes to having a real relationship with anyone.  *sigh*
Enjoy an Excerpt:
Darrius stepped closer to Heaven. His scent of musk and hot male surrounded her as if for protection.
“Are you all right?”
No way would she believe Darius was concerned for her.
She raised her chin so she could meet the head of security’s eyes. “I’m fine.”
“I think you should come with me to the office.” Concern laced his words.
Heaven licked her dry lips. Because the behemoth noticed her, she now had to deal with him. “Said I’m fine.”
The corner of his mouth turned up into a generous smile. “Humor me.”
Some might consider him as handsome, but his seven-foot-tall frame and stern expression made him appear menacing.
“Sure.” She smiled.
His expression softened.
Could the goliath be swayed with a smile?
She followed him toward the door leading to the private elevator. He slowed his gait until she walked beside him. As they approached the door, it opened. She knew he’d pressed the switch in his pocket.
He controlled everything in the building. He enjoyed being in charge. So did she.
In the elevator, he gazed at her as his scent permeated the small space, sending a pulsing electricity down her spine. She shifted her weight from her left foot to her right and back again, trying to ease the need building between her legs. Being so close to him suddenly caused the air to escape her lungs.
“You realize this isn’t necessary.”
He straightened his gold cufflinks. “I think it is.”
