GENRE: Mystery/Thriller/Suspense

BLURB:

A family torn by deception and greed now saw Emily for what she was, and a co-worker with a vicious past of his own now has his own personal vendetta against her. Excerpt One:

A minivan pulls in and up to the gas pump behind Herb. Three young children run out and into the store, their father following close behind, yelling for them to slow down.

Herb remains leaning against his car, right hand pinched under his left armpit and his left hand pushing the cigarette into his face—a minding-my-own-business look. He holds this pose until he senses a stationary figure out of the corner of his eye: the mom.

Discreetly he looks over, then indiscreetly, and that’s when he sees the woman’s squinting and curious eyes on him. He drops the freshly-lit cigarette into the gravel and steps on the cherry, twisting his foot over top so not to blow up the ground he stands on.

Shit.

He lowers his head and pulls down the brim of his faded gray baseball hat to the top of his sunglasses. He holds the gas pump as the fluid pours past his hand and into the hunk of metal.

Look away or I’ll fucking kill you.

He can feel her still looking over at him and the gas cannot pump fast enough. He’s made it two states away and he’ll be damned if this one woman is the end of him. He’ll kill her right here if he has to. Right here in this parking lot. Let her nosey ass get a little closer and then slit her throat. Dump some gasoline on her smug body and watch her squirm until the life drains out of her. That’ll teach her to look over here.

She starts to walk toward him.

It’s not full yet, the tank, but he’s not taking any chances. He removes the nozzle, replaces the gas cap and heads for his car door.

Don’t do it, Lady, he thinks as he yanks back on the door handle. But she does it.

“Excuse me,” she says.

Herb stops, shuts his eyes. Breathe. He looks at her and smiles, but receives no smile in return. Instead he gets the look of curiosity, only magnified. She is within mere feet of him now and those squinted eyes show crow’s feet attached. Her mouth is open, lower jaw just hanging there lazily as she thinks.

“Are you…?” she begins, but then stops. And right at that very moment, Herb can feel the cold steel of the switchblade in his pocket. Hey, it’s saying to him. Come and get me.

Welcome, John! Please start off by telling us a little about yourself.

First, I’d like to say thank you for having me. I appreciate you taking the time to share my work, and thank you to your followers for taking the time to read it over.

I’ve been writing for 13 years, mostly in the mystery/suspense/thriller genre. I notice your site hosts a majority of romance novels, so to your followers, I say this: No need to worry! Romance is certainly present in Out of Hiding, as well.

Is Out of Hiding a single title, or part of a series?

As of now, it’s just a single title. I’m very satisfied with the way it ended and I feel readers will be, as well. So I’ll leave my characters in peace…for now.

What were your inspirations for this story?

I have my wife to thank for this story, actually. When I had a wall blocking any creativity, she was able to give me the boost I needed to start this book. She gave me the idea for some characters and a storyline and I went from there.

Please share your setting for Out of Hiding. Have you ever lived or visited there? If so, what did you like most?

The story is set in rural North Carolina. The town is fictional, but the scenery is easy to visualize—many people can already visualize rural North Carolina and its openness. I’ve driven through North Carolina many times and thought to myself how open and peaceful it is, and when I was trying to think of a great place to escape (for my antagonist, of course), I thought of that open country setting.

If you could have an author roundtable discussion with any authors, who would you invite?

If I could have a roundtable, I’d have it with three of the most successful writers of all time: James Patterson, JK Rowling, and Stephen King. They were all able to not only make a living at writing, but they were able to attain greatness.

What is one thing that you would tell an aspiring writer to do?

Not to give up. I’ve been writing for 13 years and I’m still not even close to where I want to be in my career. But having perseverance will pay off one day. If you’re chasing that feeling of being a well-known writer, quitting when the times get

Excerpt and Spotlight featuring The Rules of Rebellion by Amity Hope w/a rafflecopter giveaway! @entangledpub @entangledpublishing @amityhope @AmityHopeAuthor @amityhopeauthor #youngadult

About The Rules of Rebellion:

  1. Skinny dip (her idea)
    2. Prank someone (his idea)
    3. Stargaze (her idea)
    4. Kiss someone (his idea)

    Leo Zimmerman has had a crush on his curvy best friend Kylie Jenkins since forever, so When he discovers the girl with a flair for baking has a newfound plan to rebel against her overbearing parents, he’s determined to be the one to help her carry it out. Who better than a self-proclaimed rebel like himself to show her the ropes of letting loose?

    Sure, taking her to her first high school party, helping her sneak out of the house, or watching a sunset together isn’t exactly a hardship, but much harder is masking his feelings the more time they spend together. And when he suggests adding “kiss a boy” to Kylie’s plan and she accepts…suddenly all his dreams seem to be coming true.

    But Leo’s got a secret that could change everything between them, and it’s only a matter of time before it comes to the surface.

Excerpt from The Rules of Rebellion:

Her dimples popped into place, her smile so bright it about knocked me senseless. She bounced a bit on her tiptoes, and for one hopeful second I thought she’d maybe hug me. Unfortunately, she reined in her enthusiasm.

“That’s the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me,” she said. “I’ve got to run. My sister is probably pacing in front of my car by now. See you later.”

She scurried off, and I was disappointed the conversation had ended so quickly. I didn’t mind watching her walk away, though. I loved how the girl filled out a pair of jeans. She had more bounce in her step than most of the cheerleaders. Kylie was just plain…perky. She always seemed to be happy and smiling. I’d suspected Kylie was one of those rare people who was always fun to be around. Spending time with her these past few months had proven I wasn’t wrong.

She finally rounded the corner, slipping from my view. As I twisted back around, something crinkled beneath my foot. On the floor, directly where we’d been talking, was a pink slip of paper. It looked suspiciously similar to the one that had been sticking out of Kylie’s notebook earlier today.

I swiped it off the floor as I cast another glance down the hallway. It was too late to call after her. I’d have to give it back to her later. I reflexively glanced at the page, assuming it was a recipe, but wanting to be sure it wasn’t something important. Something she might need immediately.

Senior Checklist.

I glanced down the hallway again, confirming that she was out of sight and that she hadn’t realized she dropped the paper and was coming back. The hallway was clearing out, most of us anxious to get out of here at the end of the day.

With no sign of Kylie, I leaned against my locker and glanced at the sheet in my hand again. I was expecting to see items like Choose date and time for graduation party. Or Tour college campus.

I did not expect to see the items that were actually listed.

Senior Checklist

  1. Skinny dip (sort of)
  2. Sneak out (but don’t get caught)
  3. Prank someone (nothing destructive)
  4. Go to a party (no drinking)
  5. Kiss a boy (finally!)
  6. Watch a sunset (so romantic)

If I’d had any idea her list was going to be so private, I wouldn’t have read it. But once I’d seen it, I couldn’t exactly un-see it.

So I read it again.

About Amity Hope:

CHICKEN CULPRIT

by Vikki Walton

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  cozy mystery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Moving to Colorado seemed like a great way to start over. In Carolan Springs, Anne plans to spend her days living the simpler life.

But when her neighbor is found dead in his compost pile, trouble comes knocking on Anne’s  door.

All the evidence points to Anne’s other neighbor, Kandi Jenkins. As the young woman begs Anne for help, Anne finds herself thrust into a world of deceit and secrets.

Who had the most to gain from Ralph’s death? As the suspect list grows, Anne finds her desire for the simple life may have led her to something sinister.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Three:
Anne pointed at a woman wearing a baby snuggly in her Tula wrap.
“I’d only seen white and brown eggs at my grocery store. But earlier today I saw some blue ones, some pink, and even some green eggs. How do you get those kinds of eggs and do they taste different than a white egg?”
Anne moved to the side of the stage where a dozen eggs were in a clear container. “Each of these eggs is a different color. Some”—she held up one—“even have spots on them. This is determined by the type of hens you have. For instance, if you want a brown egg, then your best choices would be something like a Rhode Island Red, a Wyandotte, an Astralorp, or Orpington.
Ameraucana or Aracaunas, or what some refer to as Easter-eggers, lay blue or green eggs.’’
A small hand shot up.
“Yes? You in the back.” She motioned to the small boy.
“Um, uh, how do you know if the eggs are good for you? I mean, you know, like, okay to eat? I mean, when you go to the store, you can trust they’re okay.”
“Good question. Thanks for asking.” The boy beamed at the praise.
“First, let’s start with the timing. When you go outside and retrieve eggs on a daily basis, those eggs are fresh. Eggs in the store can have taken up to five weeks just to get on your refrigerator shelf.”
Some people in the crowd gasped, and Anne heard, “Is that true?”
“It’s true. Look it up.” She smiled at the crowd.
