Welcome to Mayhem, Minnesota, home of the Knitty Kitty, The Little Slice of Heaven Pie Shop, and O’Halloran’s Pub—owned by the four young women known as The Whiskey Sisters.

In the wake of her divorce, Jameson O’Halloran has gone man-vegan. And this is one diet she’s determined to stick with. Even when her long-lost ex-brother-in-law shows up looking like two scoops of double dutch dipped in chocolate… She’s not giving in. Been there and still wearing the messy T-shirt.

It’s been a decade since Scott Clarke left his family and his hometown, never to return. But when tragedy strikes, he finds himself dragged back to the land of gossip, judgment, and the one woman he absolutely, positively, without a doubt can never have. His brother’s ex is off-limits. He just needs to keep repeating that to himself until it sinks in.

Read an Excerpt:

The shelf is a little too high for my short self, and I’m only able to brush the dishes with my fingertips.

“Oh, here, let me help you with that…”

Before I can object, he’s standing behind me, reaching over me to get the dishes. For a brief second, his front is pressed against my back. His broad, muscled, perfectly sculpted front. I feel a wave of unwelcome warmth beginning under my collar and creeping up my neck.

“Thanks…” I murmur awkwardly, keeping my back to him for a moment longer in an attempt to quash my blush.

“Okay. I’m just going to grab a shower before my brother gets here, if you don’t mind.”

“Nope. Not at all,” I say quickly. “You go right ahead.”

Once he disappears around the corner, I silently smack my palm to my forehead.
What was that, Jameson? Why the blush? He’s just your ex-husband’s brother, that’s all. This is insane. I’ve got to stop this childish behavior. No. More. Men. Remember? No thinking about men. No looking at men. No fantasizing about men.

Especially not that man!

I’m still shaking my head and silently berating myself when I hear him behind me.

“Hey, Jameson, do you happen to know if my dad keeps an extra toothbrush around? I dropped mine in the toilet and…”

I don’t hear the end of his sentence because, when I turn to face him, I suddenly can’t hear anything. I’m too entranced by the sight of him wearing nothing but a towel around his waist.

Oh, crap, oh crap, oh crap… I am in so much trouble here. No men. No men. No men… I repeat the mantra over and over again in my head, but clearly the rest of my body isn’t getting the memo.

Where do I start?  I mean really.  It’s like I waited FOREVER for this book in the series.  If you want a recap of my review of Henny’s story here you go: Hennessey’s Review.  So I won’t go into the sisters again in my review but let’s just say that they all play a very big part of this book and it is wonderful how Ms. Rico is able to use them in nonintrusive ways.  Bailey and Jameson’s side plot is brilliantly played out, even if my heart broke a bit.  Very realistically written and heartfelt.  Remember that Jameson is the oldest and Bailey the youngest.

Anyways, I’m here to tell you how much I just ADORED this book.  In some ways, it supersedes the first one and I’ll tell you why:

  1.  Jameson is the oldest sibling and feels like a failure.  In her marriage, in helping her sisters and at times her son, Jackson.  Jackson is hilarious in this book.  Unca Scott and beddy-bye are just two of his sayings.  Jameson carries some guilt when it comes to her mother’s death and still misses her. But what was great about that is she was finally able to “see” her mother when it came to the butterfly exhibit at the fair.  Trust me, I had a tear.  She fights for what she wants and doesn’t let her douche bag of an ex-husband take it from her.  Also, she cares deeply for her father in law and the feeling is mutual.
  2.  Scott.  I swooned.  Yes, swooned and pictured Josh Lucas as my Scott.  Just think Sweet Home Alabama and you’ll understand.  Anyway, I loved him from the start and when we finally understand why he left and then the fallout later in the book, my heart literally broke.  How could someone be that cruel to another human being?  I know, there are plenty of people out there but in the end, they don’t get their way.  Just the last scene in the bar spoke volumes to me in the sense that a certain douchebag will never get his way.
  3. The Pie Lady is back and spookier than ever.  She scares me.  Seriously.  Ms. Rico has written a secondary character that is funny, fun but reminds me somewhat of a fairy godmother.  In a spooky way.
  4. The celebrity cat scenes.  Laugh out loud funny.
  5. The mystery in regards to Win and Scott.  I really liked that plot point.  It showed me that the Clarkes were made of a certain character and didn’t back down.  Too bad Win didn’t get the same message.  Ungrateful little snot.
  6.  With this story, we didn’t have an outsider trying to take over something.  I love Brynn but this one was more about two childhood friends that made a pact that they both forgot about.  It’s about finding that true love when you think that you will never get it.  For finding that someone that makes you feel alive when you don’t think you deserve it.  For finding the peace in the reasons why you leave and but then find reasons for never leaving again.

Ms. Rico has written that rare second book in a series that really makes you think.  I’m not sure if I could have coped with what Scott went through all those years ago.  Jameson had to finally get her backbone when it came to Win and his ways.  Douchebag.  Yes, I will continue to say it.  It’s still a story about sisters but in the end, it’s about being true to yourself and fighting for what you truly want in life.

About the Author:

L.E. Rico didn’t set out to be an author. In fact she’s made a name for herself as a classical music radio host—doing her best to make the music and the composers relevant by putting them into a modern context. It was just a few years ago that she discovered a passion for writing that blossomed into an entire novel. And then another. And another. And, while she still spends plenty of time on the radio, telling the stories of the great composers, she spends even more time composing her own great stories.

#Review of Under the Radar (a High Stakes novel) by Dee. J. Adams w/a rafflecopter giveaway! #romanticsuspense @DeeJAdams

Under the Radar

by Dee J. Adams

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Romantic Suspense
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Two brothers. Two best friends. One robbery gone wrong.

With a court date looming, a near-fatal car accident, and a house invasion, the four surviving witnesses to an armed robbery know they are targets. In a desperate attempt to stay safe, they take matters into their own hands and go off the grid a week before the trial.

Danny St. John was stuck in a dark place of guilt and regret after a personal tragedy. On the run from violent criminals, he is forced to spend time with the one woman who makes him feel too much. Victoria Lopez needs to protect her heart, but she also misses the guy Danny used to be and thinks she might be able to bring him back. Now, evading gunmen together in Sequoia National Forest, Vic will risk everything to keep Danny safe.

Eric St. John isn’t a big fan of his sister-in-law-to-be, Zoe Turner. Sure, she’s beautiful, but also bossy and brash. When Eric and Zoe are forced to rely on each other for survival, he sees a side to Zoe he never anticipated, a side he definitely likes. But as the two grow closer, so do the men hunting them down.

Time nearly runs out as each couple must not only brave the perils of the wilderness and their growing feelings for each other, but also outwit their pursuers in a deadly game of cat and mouse.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
Something moved in the bushes just outside the window in the corner of the room. Zoe’s pulse leapt as she sat up in bed.
“Did you hear that?” Vic whispered almost soundlessly.
“I thought you were sleeping.” Zoe’s voice wasn’t much louder.
“Tried. Not successful.”
They heard the tiniest scrap on the glass and both of them bolted out of bed. “Stuff the pillow under the blankets,” Zoe ordered softly. “Shoes,” she said next as she grabbed her flats. Before they could leave the room, an explosion of sound came from the front of the house and Zoe swung Vic into the closet, followed her in, and shut the door as the window in their room blasted apart. Seconds later, heavy footsteps crunched over broken glass.
Fear and nausea erupted in Zoe’s gut like a geyser. Grunts and thuds coming from the hallway marked the sounds of a fight and she held her breath, waiting for someone to pull open the door. She’d pulled Vic into a death trap by jamming them into this closet.
Bullets erupted outside the door and Zoe slapped a hand over her mouth to hold back a scream. The noise stopped and long tense seconds passed as Zoe and Vic stared at each other, the whites of Vic’s eyes clear in the dark. Before Zoe knew what happened, Vic slammed the door open and pounced on the man in front of them, putting him in a chokehold while hanging onto his back. It was the same thing Casey had done when she’d fought off her ex last year. The gun bounced on the floor and Zoe scrambled to reach it, her hands shaking and breath billowing in and out of her lungs.
Good jeez…what a ride.  Where has Ms. Adams been all of my life?  This is my first read from her but not my last.  I definitely will be snatching up the other 3 books in this series.  And no worries about missing anything.  This book stood alone.  And while everyone knows that romantic suspense is my all time favorite.  Ms. Adams does not disappoint in this area at all.  Nope.  I was holding my breath during a couple of parts.
What kinda left me meh were the romances in the book.  Don’t get me wrong, I loved Zoe and Eric.  Danny and Victoria were good, too.  But I felt like the romance felt a bit off since we were dealing with two completely different romantic couples and their time on the page was split when it came to that aspect.  I honestly felt like the friendship were much stronger in the book than the romance.  Danny is the one character that I felt the sorriest for.  You just have to read the beginning of the book to feel that and I thought his grief was plausible and the guilt he felt realistic.  Zoe was a trip.  Eric uptight and Victoria at times, a tease but together, on the run, they were unstoppable.
The action in this book is some of the best I’ve ever read.  I really felt like I was in a movie just watching it unfold.  Ms. Adams does a great job of putting you right there with her characters and the thing that impressed me most was the attention to detail in her settings.  In most suspense stories, personal hygiene etc. is mostly left out but Ms. Adams puts it in there so that we can see that her characters have the same concerns that we do.  The plot is extremely plausible, realistic and made for an awesome read.
Again, I’m kicking myself that I haven’t read Ms. Adams before.  Her pacing is fantastic, the characters she writes are real people and the situations that she puts them in keeps you turning the page for more.  Don’t be like me and skip this book or author.  Trust me, you’ll kick yourself later.
Title: COUNTERFEIT BOYFRIEND
Author: Cindi Madsen
Genre: Contemporary Romance
About Counterfeit Boyfriend:
My twin brother’s talked me into a lot of crazy things, but taking his place on a road trip with his girlfriend so he can party with his friends is a whole new level of insanity. What’s even more insane is I somehow find myself agreeing to it—thanks, alcohol, guilt, and bribery. I’m determined to undo the arrangement, but then I meet Gwen, this sexy redheaded hurricane of energy and brains.
And then she kisses me. Just like that, I’m driving her up the coast, on our way to a wedding with a mess of complications. With each hour and each stop, I’m falling harder and harder for a woman who doesn’t know my actual name.
I’m trying to do the right thing. Or the lesser of the wrong things. All my life I’ve had to clean up my brother’s messes, but for the first time ever, I’ve landed the upper hand in one of our switcheroo schemes. Now I’ve just got to come clean and convince Gwen that I’m the brother she should be with.
You know what gets me?  When an author doesn’t think that they are funny?  Yes, I read the acknowledgments and Ms. Madsen doesn’t think she is that funny.  Her author buddies had to tell her.  Really?  I was rolling, like belly laughing from reading this book.  I hate when authors don’t think they are funny.  Especially Ms. Madsen.  Bare none, she has written the funniest book I’ve read this year.  And one of the sweetest.  Yes, sweetest.
Don’t expect a lot of hanky-panky between these two.  Trust me, it is not needed.  Between Gwen trying to fit back in with her friends and Ethan having to lie to her the whole time AND maintain is his sanity and not kill his brother, plus, the road trip.  You don’t miss it.  I just wanted Gwen and Ethan to keep talking.  Gwen kinda reminded of Sally Field’s character in Smokey and the Bandit.  She was in constant motion, never stopped talking and the Bandit fell in love with her anyway.  *sigh*  Ethan was the same way.  He never talked down to her, made fun of her.  He appreciated her, genuinely liked her and somewhere down the road, fell in love with her.
Gwen, on the other hand, was a tougher sell with it came to Ethan.  She kept thinking that she was with Evan and wondering why the personality switch.  Y’all.  This book.  It has all the feels.  The twin switch is handled quite well.  I have twin aunts and I remember hearing switch stories all the time.  Unfortunately, they never switched boyfriends but their stories were still hilarious.  Ms. Madsen has written a twin switcharoo story that is realistic, plausible and I never felt sorry for Evan AT.All.  In fact, I’m still wondering what happened to him and Tori at the birthday party.  Now THAT would be a story to tell.
Ms. Madsen never disappoints with me.  Never.  I’ve read her YA, NA and adult books and she just gets better.  She is one of my auto-buy authors for life.  Again, I was belly laughing with these two.  Gwen and Ethan are that magical couple that needs to be on the screen.  Passionflix needs to take notice of this book.  Seriously.  Someone needs to make this happen.  Dream casting:  Isla Fisher and Sebastian Stan.
About Cindi:
Cindi Madsen is a USA Today bestselling author of contemporary romance and young adult novels. She sits at her computer every chance she gets, plotting, revising, and falling in love with her characters. Sometimes it makes her a crazy person. Without it, she’d be even crazier. She has way too many shoes, but can always find a reason to buy a pretty new pair, especially if they’re sparkly, colorful, or super tall. She loves music and dancing and wishes summer lasted all year long. She lives in Colorado (where summer is most definitely NOT all year long) with her husband, three children, and one overly-dramatic tomcat.
