Jaycee tossed a paper towel in the trash and met Melissa’s gaze in the mirror over the sink.

“When are you going to tell him?”

“Tell who what?” Melissa asked as she dug in her bag for lip balm.

“Tell Justin you have feelings for him.”

Melissa froze. Blinked a few times and glanced at Jaycee. “What are you talking about?”

Jaycee rested her hip against the counter and crossed her arms over her chest. “Don’t play dumb with me. I see how you look at him, especially when he doesn’t know it.”

“He’s my friend and I’m glad he’s home.”

“Really? That’s it?”

Melissa shrugged and resumed her searching. “What more could there be?”

“You tell me.”

“There’s nothing to tell.”

“Then why don’t you date?”

Melissa gripped the tube of balm in her fingers. “I date.”

“Name the last time you went out with a guy.”

She racked her brain but came up empty. “College, maybe?”

“That was six years ago.”

“No…it can’t be that long.”

Jaycee arched a brow.

“Wait. I went out with Roger Pierce for a while.”

“Until he moved away.” Jaycee shook her head. “I’m telling you, you have it bad for Justin.”

Did she? Did that explain the tingles she’d been trying to ignore? Or had she been without a significant other for too long now?

Slowly spreading the balm across her lips, Melissa met her own gaze in the mirror. Clear brown eyes peered back, but a rosy red had crept into her cheeks. She recognized the look, had seen it on dozens of bride’s faces through the years.

Good grief, was she in love with Justin?

“Do you care for him as more than just a friend?” Jaycee asked when Melissa had been quiet too long.

“Of course not.”

Despite her words, Melissa flashed back to that Christmas Eve many years ago when they’d promised to be friends forever. How they’d carried through on the vow, remaining friends through high school and stayed in touch when he left Christmas Town for college. She understood why he didn’t return, so she’d made sure to visit him in Boston. Once their friends had started to marry, meeting up at weddings had become their thing. But was that good enough for her now?

Tossing the tube back in her purse with more pressure than she intended, Melissa closed the bag. Pushed her unsettling thoughts away. “You’re imagining things.”

With a shrug, Jaycee pushed from the counter. “If you say so.”

“I say so,” she said, yanking the door open to return to the raucous, overcrowded pub.

Love at the Electric

by Jenn Hughes

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Contemporary Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Walking wildfire Sam Owens gets Lillian hot in all the right ways, but there’s more to the software CEO than just a pretty face. And a great body. And… Oh, right. He’s the enemy, according to the contract she signed with his rival. So when they secretly meet up for movies at The Electric, Lillian can’t get too involved with Sam. She could lose her job. Her reputation. And her heart.

Sam is in love with his company, his image, his video games, and his ability to avoid commitment–at least until he levels up with attorney Lillian Walker. With her love of campy horror flicks and a body that makes him want to howl like a cartoon wolf, Sam’s found his leading lady. Too bad getting close to Lillian means tangling with her boss, a supervillain in the making.

In the nights leading up to Christmas, movies at The Electric mean more than just mutant toads and cannibal fruitcakes. Between shenanigans with old flames and an arch nemesis out to destroy any future they might have, Sam and Lillian learn the hard way that falling in love isn’t as easy as it looks on screen. When the past gets in the way of a perfect “the end,” there’s really only one solution–if werewolf Santas can bring them together, zombie ex-girlfriends can keep them together.

After all, anything’s possible at The Electric.

Excerpt One:

Swooooshhhh and thunk.

Lillian had wounded his pride like an arrow in an ogre’s soft underbelly. She’d called him a cover boy. Like he was in a boy band, and not the CEO of Origin, the best software and tech development company in the country. Scratch that—world. And despite that fact, she had yet to flirt with or flatter him…

Hold up. Intimately?

Where had they met? Where had they intimately met? He’d remember touching a body like that…

Hot cocoa.

When he looked at Lillian, hot cocoa came to mind. Not helpful in the slightest, except for the affirmation he was probably in the midst of a coronary and his brain starved of oxygen.

“Riiiiight. Yeah, we met at that…uh, that—”

“Don’t panic. I was joking. It wasn’t intimate at all. It was six months ago, and we only shook hands,” she reassured him.

It didn’t help. Sam couldn’t even remember where they’d shook hands. He pressed his lips together and felt his eyes bug out like Panic Pete. Lillian groaned melodramatically and then laughed.

“I’m on Preston Lavery’s legal team. You gave a terrific speech at the cloud development symposium in New York City. Preston introduced us afterward.”

White hot rage coursed through Sam. The mere mention of Preston Lavery was as good as a cold shower. He slid his hand below the tabletop and hid his clenched fist, pressing it down into the vinyl seat.

“Well, that explains why Rik didn’t elaborate on you any more than he did. You’re the enemy.”

Wooza.  I know that I’ve recommended the last couple of books that I’ve read, but this one is definitely high on the keeper shelf for me.  It has everything that I love about a romance.  Older characters, nerdiness, small town, a villain to truly hate, and a very satisfying ending.  That said, there were some things that bugged me and I’m hoping that in the next book they are answered.  And yes, its part of the overall plot arc of the series.

Here’s the good stuff about the book.  Sam and Lillian.  They are some of the more mature characters that I’ve read in a long time.  In fact, Sam is actually younger than Lillian and both of them are past 35.  *swoon*  I really connecting with Lillian on a deeper level.  I was in my late 30’s when I finally fell in love and had to decide what was more important.  Love or a job?  It’s not an easy decision considering that is how everyone around you looks at you.  It’s rather annoying but once you get to know Lillian, you will understand.  Sam is just a man-child projecting an image that he THINKS most people want to see.  When they finally bring down their walls, they finally figure out what is most important.  Their romance is funny, emotional, realistic, intelligent and charming.

These two were such an awesome couple.  They had me at the moment they met.  Now, of course, Rik was there and I never connected with him and I really wanted someone to slap him…hard.  I didn’t like him as a lawyer, a person and I couldn’t believe the relationship between he and Lillian back in the day.  But enough about him and his issues.  This is Lillian and Sam’s book and Ms. Hughes makes sure that the focus is on them and no one else.  The secondary characters are not intrusive but at th,e same time the only two that I really liked are Ravi and Tessa.  I’d love to read more about them in future.

Here’s what I need a bit more closure on:  Preston, the villain.  Yes, we get something about the relationship between Sam and Preston but the bombshell at the end by Rik needs to be explored.  I would just love for Lillian to go no hold barred on him and then finally, he would realize that his father can’t bail him out.  But I’ve said too much.  You just need to read this book.

Overall, this is just about my favorite book of the year.  I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

GENRE: Contemporary Romantic Suspense

BLURB:

Simone Levin had a dream job as a safari pilot until an unexpected pregnancy clipped her wings. Tired of juggling motherhood with her demanding flight schedule, Simone applies for an office job, unaware that her new boss is Carlo Carlevaro, the man who’d ditched her before finding out he’d knocked her up. Carlo returns to East Africa only to kill another fire—Ivory trafficking from his lodges threatens to destroy his company. Finding Simone back on the payroll comes as a pleasant surprise. As his employee, Simone is off-limits, but she is the only one he trusts to help with his undercover investigation. With time running out, Simone and Carlo strive to expose the trafficking ring, but working together rekindles their mutual desire. When Simone is implicated as a trafficker, revealing her daughter’s existence to Carlo seems inevitable. Acting on her instincts might come too late as the syndicate retaliate and hone in their threat. Will they survive to give their love a chance?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What group did you hang out with in high school?
I was definitely an odd one out!
What are you passionate about these days?
Crossfit! I’ve heard someone speculate the other day that it’s a cult and just laughed. I’m not throwing tractor tires around yet, and really hope I never will, but it is a great way to get strong and keep fit.
If you had to do your journey to getting published all over again, what would you do differently?
This book-writing-getting-published-business is such a learning curve I can’t see myself doing anything differently.
Ebook or print? And why?
Both, but I’m all for saving trees. Since I lived in far off places where there were neither book stores nor English as a first language, my kindle has become my lifeline. My husband also reads piles of books, and it’s nice not to have them all over the house. We are currently storing his 25 boxes of classic Sci-Fi in the garage because we don’t have enough space in our house for his collection!
What is your favorite scene in this book?
My favorite scene in Perfect Mistake is where Simone tells Carlo about their daughter. It was such an emotional scene to write.
Excerpt Three:
She glanced at him but had to look away from the intensity of his eyes, which held her with such dearness that she knew he’d spoken of her. Inwardly she trembled, her murmur of need escalating to an oscillating quake.
“Simone, there’s something you’re not telling me. If you are in trouble, please–”
She extracted her fingers from his, but he cupped her elbow in his hand. She felt like crying, but the only sound that slipped out was a strangled choke as she jerked away from him. “I’m in no trouble, thank you.” Four years too late for that one.
She wanted to laugh but it hurt too much. She had to phone her mom, but it would only be to confirm her suspicions. Her mother had never passed on the message that Carlo had phoned. Her eyes misted over and she had to blink, looking away. “I just wish someone could show me where I’m to sleep tonight.”
With me. He didn’t say the words, but they hung between them, heavy and drenched.
She curled her fingers into her palms, her nails cutting into her skin. Any physical pain that would stop her from showing him where it truly ached. “It’s such a fine bloody line, Carlo. Please understand.” She swallowed the last words, biting hard on her lip to transfer the pain that had settled underneath her heart.
